Kent, could you summarize what you meant to get across with your article?
That water absorbtion isn't the culprit, but rather copper ions? That we
should buy those test strips? Isn't our fluid (DOT4) supposed to be
non-hygroscopic anyway?

Kent, could you summarize what you meant to get across with your article? That water absorbtion isn't the culprit, but rather copper ions? That we should buy...
To clarify a question raised by a previous poster: DOT 4 brake fluid is still mineral based and is indeed water absorbtive. DOT 5 fluid is however silicone...
My '98 Jetta TDI is just turning 300k miles and going strong. She's going to get a complete timing belt kit, oil pump drive chain, oil and all filters changed...
Your 98 doesn't have an oil pump drive chain!!! The oil pump runs off of the intermediate shaft like most of the diesels before. With that much mileage, you...
Shawn Here in the HUMID Midwest. I flush my brake fluid every fall on all 3 vehicles when I put the winter wheels. The color has changed by then. The fluid...
What happens is the water can get into the system. The fluid may not absorb the water, but it can react with it. this will change the chemical make up of the...
Interesting stuff. But one still needs to change it every two years: that's per VW, not me, and in agreement with that article. Interesting reading, will pass...
Do the water pump any time you replace the timing belt. it may last through two belts but if it does not it will be costly... 155K original struts, great...
I changed my timing belt at 85,000 miles... i just bought the car and i wanted to make sure everything was in tip top shape. When it was in the shop they...
Many water pump manufacturers make pumps with brass impellers, I had one put in when I replaced the pump with the plastic impeller on my 2001 Jetta TDI during...
Impeller failure is not the issue. That only causes an overheat problem which will have indications on gauges and warning lights. IF the bearings fail before...
My impression is that diesels don't take very kindly to overheating, depending on the circumstances(pulling a long hill for example).. I wonder how much the...
... I'd go so far as to say that if a person purchased a used TDI and had no documentation of the bolts, water pump, belt, etc. being replaced-- even if there...
I agree with the post lsited below. If there is no documentation that belt change included waterpump and belt tensioner...Get it done immediately or else. Or...
Take it a little further, there are 3 idler pulleys/rollers that are just as important. My "new to me" '01 was picked up 29 Dec. On 3 Jan I cleaned the...
Then again - I *did* have all the relevant idlers, rollers and bolts replaced when I did my Tbelt at 80k. Now I'm at 145k and I'm getting the same telltale...
I found out first hand a long time ago. I had a Honda prelude (gasser) that at 90,128 the timing belt broke. The dealer told me that it was supposed to be...
I am not an expert on the diesels, but i do know alot about the Diesel Cycle... It is very efficient. Because of the PV cycle (Physics) it undergoes, more...
Alright Guys Let me ask you this one: Our '05 Passat TDI has only 34,000 miles. We bought it in 2005 used, with 6000 miles on it (what a deal we got!). At what...
Follow the dealer guidelines. Did this passat come with the remainder of the dealer warranty? If so, your probably cool. If not, I'd shop around for an...
IT doens't sound like anyone has experienced an age related issue on a timing belt so.... I have not heard a newer rule for timing belt age limits. It used to...
Whenever I do an oil change I pull off the belt cover and do a 100% visual inspection of the belt and note any change to the tensioner adjustment indicator. ...
In the infamous words of Yogi Berra, "You can tell a lot by looking". Good idea to lift the hood and grab the hoses and look at the belts every 60 days. George...
Time over rule mileage? you mean break even point? when is it less to drive a diesel vs. a gasoline auto? what's the point? ... [Non-text portions of this...
In the context of the thread, it was pretty clear: Dry rot (time) versus wear (mileage). As for my take on the answer...it depends. A garaged car will suffer ...
Does anyone know about OBD cables from under the steering wheel to a laptop where one can "tune" the TDi? If so, what does the cable usually run retail? ...
You can try e-bay however the newer versions of the software are not supported on the older cables that are more likely to appear there. ... [Non-text portions...
