My '98 Jetta TDI is just turning 300k miles and going strong. She's going
to get a complete timing belt kit, oil pump drive chain, oil and all filters
changed and an intake cleaning to ensure she keeps going the same way.
My first '01 went to 159k until someone turned into me on the freeway. Her
engine will go someplace else and probably go more than another 159k without
a thought.
My current '01 has just turned 92k (less than 2k of that with me) and I'll
probably be driving her for another 7 years or more before I worry about
replacement.
The lowest I heard of a TDI going before being scrapped due to drivetrain
was just under 300k on a 2004 Passat. He probably had other options but gave
up and moved on.
