I started looking at the bentley for this job and it says you will need to lift
the engine due to it's placement. If that is the case, you should probably do
the motor mounts (have to loosen them anyway).

I just priced parts from the dealer for a timing belt and tensioner ($163) for my 2001 Jetta 1.8t. Can anyone tell me their experience from doing this job?...

That price was just for parts. Although a private shop quoted $100 for the same. I am fine with hand rotating the motor. How much stuff do I have to move out...

I seriously doubt it. You don't always have to follow the Bentley. It is just a guide. There are shortcuts but you will probably have to work from the wheel...
