Yes, that is correct that there's some degree of danger involved with changing
the spring. However, it takes special equipment to even attempt it, so your
average Joe is going to be ok.

Keep in mind that the shock requires more than just a new spring to fit the
VF500F. If you check out my site you'll notice that the shock must be modified
to accept the new CNC machined lower clevis. As mentioned the F2 shocks are the
easiest to install because there is no reservoir to mount. However, they are
the lowest performing of the ones listed on my site. Probably the best choice
(in my opinion) is the F4 shocks. They cheap and easy to find, and the
performance is good.
