WANTED: Right Side 6 Panel Tail Light Assembly
In decent condition. Can purchase or trade. For 1993 240, but I am not using a
circuit board, so year of donor does not matter so long as it is a 6 panel.
Thanks

Just thought I would date myself a little and pass this link along. It's a
video collection of "period correct" cars that someone from an "appropriate era"
might appreciate and perhaps remember. Also the compiler must be a Volvo dude.

My 1993 240 (Red) 5 speed 202k miles, I drove to Little Rock to purchase 2 years
ago was rear ended two weeks ago. The right rear tail light is smashed, the
panel it mounts to is pushed in, the side 1/4 looks fine, decklid is fine,
bumper was missed completely. It would pull out pretty well, which is why I
opted to keep the car when they totalled it.
It needs exhaust from the cat back (new cat just put on). It needs a flame trap
cleaning at the very least and I have no idea how old the timing belt is. So a
full front seal, water pump, flame trap, tensioner, water pump job wouldn't be a
bad idea. I will most likely just hang on to the car unless there is someone
out there with a very nice 245 manual that wants a 1993 240 with working A/C and
would be willing to trade. I might even consider trading one or both 240's I
currently own.
I know this is a long shot. The other one is the 1976 Orange 242 4 speed. It's
a driver as well, has had the timing belt done, needs a heater blower. I have a
complete 242 GT interior to go in it, the stock brown (which isn't in bad shape)
is in it now.
I would estimate the total bottom dollar cash value of both of these cars
combined is about $3000 in present condition. Both have good tires. The 1993
has Virgos with new Michelins.
If any of this makes sense or interests anyone with a nice wagon to offer up,
I'm sitting on an insuance check trying to decide what to do. My inclination is
to fix the car and keep driving it, but thought I would see if anything came out
of the woodwork.
That's what I'd ***like*** to see happen, but I'll not be putting any money on
it. I'm no expert and did not sleep at a Holiday Inn Express, but suspect that
the Chinese would like very much to break into the American auto market, and
this would be a way to do it.

Folks, I sent out a note a few days ago to the 1800 list to see if there was any
interest in starting a similar discussion group, but dedicated to the 444 / 544
series. There were were quite a few positive respones, so I decided to go ahead
and give it a try.
I figure the worst thing that could happen is that it fizzles out due to lack of
activity. Best thing is that it could prompt a lot of interest in the 444 / 544
series........similar to what the 1800 list has done for that series, with over
3000 members worldwide.
So check out the following site, and follow the prompts if you're interested in
joining the 444 / 544 discussion group. Membership is restricted in order to cut
down on spam, so please give me a day or two to approve your membership request.

"book" value was $2300 (what a joke) and repairs far surpassed that, so they settle, give me $2300 -$600 salvage value and I get a car with a ruined rear end and a salvage title.
They keep collecting an increased premium from the girl that hit me, I get bent over a barrell. GO GO unregulated insurace! Poor Progressive, it would have just killed them to give me the $3000 I paid for the car, wouldn't want to put an upstanding company like them under! My plan if not to fix and drive it, is to fix it, pocket the $1700 and try to get $1200 for the car after I attempt to repair it. It's a great car with working A/C 30mpg, then sell my 1976 242 and pool the money to buy a Mercedes Unimog so the next jackass that rear ends me gets to experience a "total loss"...
If you have a "classic" be sure and look at upgrading the coverage to replace it if you get into this situation, vs my dumb-ass that only had liability and is now SOL.

¡¡¿That's a TOTAL?!!
Thanks for the input, the outcome was a $1700 settlement. I'm sure I can push the damage back out to a nearly un-noticable state and put in a tail light assembly, keep driving it, or sell it with the salvage title (hey, it is a '93 5 speed with working A/C).
If there is anyone out there with a 5 speed wagon that wants to talk trades, drop me a line.

As long as you are in MO you should be fine. KS will have a inspection prior to re-issuing a title. MO you can just fix and drive, title makes no difference in registering, just in re-sale. As long as it is well documented (the repairs) that doesn't really make any difference either they just won't total it out again. I just totaled my truck also with progressive. .. Stinks.

The good folks at Progressive have screwed me out of the real value of my car, opting to total it. I can settle and keep it (with a salvage title) for $1700 or let them keep it for $2300 (not going to happen)
It needs the rear panel the tail lights mount into pulled out a good 8 inches, no damage to the decklid and a very slight crease on the rear quarter. Also needs a right side tail light.
My plan is to keep it, fix it myself and drive it (with a salvage title)
Has anyone else every owned a car that they plan to continue to drive with a salvage title? Will this be a problem until I sell it?
I paid $3000 for it two years ago in Little Rock. 202k miles on it now, new Cat Converter, new Michelins on Virgos, no rust, seat heaters work, A/C works, blower makes no noise, don't want to get rid of it. Would never find one like it again in a 5 speed.

When buying a car you assume the worst. That way you don't get stuck with a lemon. Those cars have motor issues especially when ya shove more boost down em. Every open deck engine does. You can't ask for top dollar when its broke. I bet it also uses oil... The other reasons for smoking are coolant in the combustion (would also cause misfire), Excess fuel (car has no software, so unless the FPR is bad which would also cause hard hot starts, and long cold starts)and Burning oil. Oil burning could be caused by the engine pulling vacuum through the valve guides or blow-by past the rings. Either way, a volvo with engine issues will be expensive, and it helps to be informed.

Smokes on start-up and idle? Sounds like valve guide seals or rings. That about 3k too much for that car if the engine is bad.
