I've no affiliation, never met anyone near the seller, whatever. Byt my
daily eBay alert for anything with "Triumph" and "1200" picked it up....

Stay safe,

Hey Sean,

I currently have a Corbin seat with backrest on my '01 Trophy 1200. I
purchased the bike used with the Corbin seat on it in late 2004. The
seat was nearly new when I got it. I've logged over 10,000 miles on
the bike exclusively with the Corbin on it. My personal opinion is
that I would never spend the money on a Corbin seat. It is one of the
most uncomfortable seats I've ever had on a bike in over 25 years of
riding! On the contrary, my passengers (wife, son and daughter) all
like riding on it. I'm just not happy with the seat from a drivers
point of view. A friend of mine has a Rick Mayer seat on a BMW RT and
while I haven't ridden it for long I did log a couple hundred miles
on it one afternoon and really liked the seat. I have no experience
with a Triumph seat. Just my 2 cents.

Seats are very personal and what works for any of us, might not work
for you.

The corbin is like all corbins. Stiff. (some call it hard). I've
had three and knew what to expect.

I tried the Triumph gel and it didn't seem much different than the
first OEM. I rode (15 miles) on a gel seat that the dealer had and
did not buy the gel from Triumph.
The gel feels like the OEM but improved softness in the long ride.
The shape is the same as yours and I was looking for more shape
(seat area). I think the gel has a longer life than the "foam" from
england.

I have seen and tried a mayer and it's stuffed as soft or hard as
you like. seems like everyone that get's one likes them. He needs
your old seat or an old seat to build on as he doesn't do seat pans.

Corbin makes their own and Triumph gel is not an issue.

First
Go Find a big bike shop with a used bike that has a corbin. Call to
see if they have one. Someone will. Some Harley places have new
corbins in stock. The "shape to the arse after a time but always
remain very firm. Corbin foam is all the same. try one and you
feel the corbin foam density.
If you hang with bikers and see one that has the corbin logo on the
side or rear ask to sit on it.

I went with the Corbin "hybrid". (my own version)

I sat on a Corbin (my third on three different bikes) and it felt
good to sit IN it. It has a shape that has a little bit of a scoop
out of the seat that gives a true 2 individual person seating area.
So you sit IN it instead of the crotch straddle that the OEM shape
is like. The corbin is maybe an inch wider at the front below the
upward dip from the tank. The back part for the driver is a tad
wider (as I have found I have grown since age 25). The shape sold
me. The picture at the corbin website is very accurate for what you
get. If you slide up to the front of the seat it's a crotch dropper
like the OEM so you can tuck in and take the corners tightly.

The stock CORBIN seat is good for a long ride as it doesn't ride up
the butt and I describe it as like a kitchen table chair, not a
lazyboy. Since I ride about 100-130 miles on a tank I get off the
seat every hour or two depending on who's riding with me. (and
depending on ground speed)

I planned an upgrade to the corbin. Corbin will not do this for you.

After three months I took the seat off and got a gel pad inserted at
Saddleman in Los Angeles. They carve out a 3/4 deep spot for a 3/4
inch thick pad that fits the seating area and they insert a gel pad
that takes the long range comfort up to all day for me. I rode
about 1800 miles in five riding days and it was great. The
saddleman website describes this insert. OR-You can just buy a pad
and strap it on the existing saddle but it adds 3/4 - 1 inch height
with the covering. Mine (inserted) is smooth like you can't tell
it's there. They removed the corbin covering and did the business
and sealed it back up and you don't know it's not a Corbin, other
than its a little softer to sit in.

The gel will not freeze solid. or melt and go to goo with heat or
cold. It will hold the temperature that it's in...
In summer it will warm up if left in the sun and it will be warm to
sit on for a while. likewise I left it outside in the mountains and
it got to freezing at night and it's cold for a while. It will
adapt to the temp of your arse after a while.

I'm happy with mine but, your mileage may vary, etc, etc.
Others will chime in.

Sean

I also got the backrest option when I got the seat.
It's great for the back rider and I use it to strap on a backpack or
extralarge tank bag

I also should mention that I went up to the Corbin factory on a road
trip and had the seat made for me with a few slight adjustments
before riding off.

They made my seat in 3 hours.
Seat pan made and cooled in 1 hour
Leather selected and sewn up in an hour.
1 hour for fitting and test riding.

Prices are as published on the corbin site. More money than I
wanted but completely satisfied on mine.

Sean, I ordered a seat for my 99 trophy on 4/20/06 corbin said it
would take 2 to 3 weeks to get it, showed up yesterday 5/31/06, i
guess what they really meant to say was 4 to 5 weeks. The best part is
finally seeing it sitting on the porch when you get home thinking how
much fun it is going to be opening up this big white box with the
corbin name on it and just below saying "American craftsmen live on"
sort of like Christmas morning [sorry did'nt mean to offend anyone
with the C word]. Well my excitment was short lived, i guess Carlos
the fellow who's name is on a sticker located under the seat claiming
to be the assembler was not told by upper managment that he was
supposed to be a craftsman. You would think he would have seen the
box's that say he is but then again they are only printed in one
language, English. Anyway ordered the seat with no cut out for
backrest option, came with hole and bracket set up, seat cover has dt
stitch pattern pulled to the left side on passenger seat pulled to the
right on riders seat looks like an S comming down the middle. Also
some loose threads on the stitching. Called corbin last night said
they are going to have to crack down on quality control and that i
should ship this one back while they go ahead and start a new one.
They were'nt to happy when i told them i was'nt going to pay for
shipping back to them or for the new one, tell Carlo's it's comming
out of his check and maybe he will pay a little more attention to
detail. I thought that's what being a craftsman is all about, guess it
just does'nt fit into today's non durable good's economy. That's what
i know, Ed. --- In TriumphTrophy@yahoogroups.com, "Sean"

Hi Sean,

I've heard/read a lot of people say that Corbins are quite firm (hard)
and that Rick Mayer or Bill Mayer (two separate companies) make the
best custom seats. I would look them up online - they both have Web
sites, and talk to them.

You'd have to send in your seat of another stock seat and wait a few
weeks.

I was fortunate in winning a new Bill Mayer seat on eBay for less than
the price of a Corbin.

Others here shout the praises of Russel DayLong seats - don't know
anything about that, but my local riding buddy was one of those who
pointed me to Rick Mayer and Bill Mayer.

best, Leon

MY EXPERIENCE - on my 98 Trophy 1200 -

I had the stock, and if that was all I could have I would have sold the
bike.

I had a Corbin - great for me as the driver, because it is firmly padded
and well shaped (I'm about 6'1" and 210 lbs - don't have a big butt).
The passenger pad is small and hard, though, so unless your passenger
has a small and hard derriere, not a good choice. Sold the Corbin.

Got a Rick Mayer (Meyer?) - great workmanship. After two years, decided
it was too soft on the sides (not supported enough) and so emailed him,
then returned it for reworking. He did four things that made me a
believer in his business: First, he reworked it fast. Second, he said he
reworked it to the way he currently does ALL Trophy saddles. Third, it
feels great now - both for me, and for The Passenger. Finally, even
though I took two years to decide, he did it for free. What could be
better? I've done 500-mile days on it, no regrets.

Additional info - at a rally, I saw a Trophy with a Russell Day-Long -
looked like a well padded sofa, wider and more cushion-like than my
Mayer, and I believe there is a steel suspension "wings" in the seat to
assure side-support. Were I buying another, I may consider that. Or not
- the Mayer looks a little better.

ALSO - I have a Sargent seat on my Speed Triple (their stock
off-the-shelf version). Nice enough, but nothing to rave about. NOTE:
Call Sargent and get their brochure about their custom work. It may be
an excellent option to have them do a custom saddle for you, but I have
no experience with that.

Rest assured, anything you choose (including a 2'6 with an oven mitt
duct taped atop it) will be way better than stock.

Neil, did you find that the way he reworked it got rid of the "forward
slide/lean" feel of the stocker? I've tried a Day Long on the Trophy seat pan,
but found that it had the same downhill-towards-the-tank feel as stock. Great
seat, and it wasn't as bad as stock in this regard, but I did feel as though it
was putting more of a bend in my lower back to compensate for the "ramping."

Regarding the seat issue, I bought a Triumph gel seat here in UK -
waste of petrol money! Subsiquently bought a beaded cover from states -
Simpson or Sampson Touring or something, cost me about £16 to get it to
UK. 500 miles in a day now a lot beter. Try it,its cheap enought.

Sorry to hear of the botched seat...
I won't defend Corbin or the mistake, but I have seen that they have
backed the product fully and given full satisfaction. After three
of their seats. The will also make adjustments to shape/warranty
wear for ever. (unless you need a new cover) Then it's just the
cost of the cover. It happpens, but shouldn't.
I remember a 32" Sony TV that I took home and it was DOA. Took 2
weeks to get a replacement from the Major appliance seller. And NO
ONE accepted responsibility or helped return the tv or get the new
one out to me.

They should suck up the shipping and expedite the return.

I picked mine up on a tuesday (I was at their factory) and they
shipped the OEM seat to my house and it arrived before I did.

They have factories at Califirnia and Florida or Georgia...I forget.

If it's not right whip on the "Upper Management" and they should be
satisfying.

Blame management for not having checked it.

Phil

Sean...

Leon mentioned he won a Bill Mayer seat on EBay. He won it from me I believe and
I'm glad he likes it. I have won both a Corbin as well as a Bill Myer seat in
the past at various motorcycle events as door prizes. I live a charmed life:) I
sold both of them on Ebay because... I have had the best of luck with the
Airhawk Seat Cushion. I have put well over 100,000 miles on my two Trophies all
with the comfort of the Air hawk. To me you can't beat the comfort, the price
(about $149) and with this cushion you can move it from bike to bike so you have
a great seat on ALL your bikes.

I did 6,000 miles a few weeks ago during a ride called the "RAT" - which is Ride
Around Texas. So between the ride over to Texas from Florida - the RAT and the
ride back is was 6,000 miles. This seat talk came up at the event. A few guys
sat on my Airhawk. You can't tell anything about a seat or cushion from sitting
on it. You have to ride it long and hard to see what it's like for you.

This past week-end during the MD2020 I was on my Airhawk as usual. It sprang a
leak and went flat. (It's not a perfect world) So that was 4500 miles over the
week-end on the stock seat. Yikes! I'm fixing the Airhawk like NOW! Just like
patching a bicycle tube. Nothing to it.

A couple of weeks ago I visited some of the WW1 Battlefields and
Cemeteries in Flanders and the Somme, I said I'd do a report, so here
it is. It's taken a week to begin to get a handle on what I've seen
and learned.
I asked on this group for any advice, the bit I did take was to base
myself in or near Ieper/Ypres (Wipers to WW1 Tommies).
This is in northern Belgium which is very pro British (because it was
the only bit of Belgium not to be occupied by the Germans in WW1) and
EVERYBODY speaks English (and French,Dutch,German or Flemish).
If you have never visited the Continent for lack of language skills I
can highly recommend it as a base for your first trip.
I stayed in a Farm B&B 90 minutes from Calais and 3 miles from Ieper.
It was MARVELLOUS, the best place I've ever stayed.
I ride a very low milage 1995 900 Trophy which had no problems at all,
I only had to unblock a Scottoiler jet on my mates Suzuki 1200 Bandit.
For both of us it was our first trip abroad by Motorcycle and the
locals loved the Triumph and us being English.
Our longest day in the saddle was 240 miles(broken by the ferry
crossing, Dover/Calais) and our shortest was 26 in one day because so
much happened all those years ago in such a small area that our
longest trip was to a restaurant for tea!
We all know the Trophy seat is pants but I had no worries even though
my mate complained when we got to Dover and occasionally during the
trip about his Bandit seat.
This is because I've got a Cruis'n Comfort Lambskin Seatcover with a
piece of foam cut to shape which it holds in place underneath.
Lee and Susan, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
This was all with the raincover fitted all the time because it rained
everyday.
I have to confess that when I first fitted it I felt a bit of a big
girls blouse riding a bike with a fluffy seat but the more you ride,
the more you want to ride because it is just so comfortable. It allows
you to move about easily and also allows 'down under'(apologies to Lee
and Susan) to stay airy and fresh(ish)! LOL.
We took turns to lead and navigate and rode in loose formation with my
Trophy Averaging 47 mpg and the Bandit 51 mpg for the trip, this is
everything from Autoroute blasts to back lane bimbles.I'm heavier than
my mate and my Trophy has hard luggage fitted where his Bandit has
none, I carried everything.
I don't really know where to start with the WW1 stuff.
It can be overwhelming, the numbers killed are mind numbing.
Even if you have no specific interest it's worth a visit to 'Hill 62'
which has a museum and preserved trenches with half a dozen blasted
and twisted remains of trees from the battles.
Do have a look at the 'Sterioscopes' which give a 3D, albeit black and
white (now sepia) view which is both compelling and horrific as
foreign photographers were not censured like the British who were not
allowed to show dead bodies, not even of animals except from a
distance. They show how your Grandfather or Great Grandfather lived or
died.
Also visit any War Cemetery, you won't have to look for one you'll
ride past loads, and wonder at the numbers of men with no known
graves. How unimaginably bad must it have been to lose tens of
thousands of bodies? and the ones they did find, 75% were
unidentifiable meaning lots of grave stones with 'A Soldier of the
Great War, Known unto God' or 'A Soldier of a Scottish Regiment' or
'An Unknown Australian Soldier' and similar for the other combatant
nations.
If you can visit the Last Post ceremony in Ieper(Ypres) at the Menin
Gate at 8pm every day (since 1927 with a break between 1940-44!) and
not have to fight back tears, then you are not human.
My mate speaks French and German so when 3 Poles, one of whom spoke
German asked him what is the fascination for the British of the First
World War? it made me think...and the best answer I could give was "it
has left a scar on the soul of the nation" but his German wasn't up to
it.
Will I go again? Most definitely YES and on the Bike, it's the only
way to travel:-)
As you can tell it's quite a moving, overwhelming experience but is not
one millionth of the hell endured by those men 90 years ago.
Read about Passiondaele or 1st July 1916 on the Somme and the much
quoted phrase "Lions led by Donkeys" is the only one that fits.
My family has several "Lion" photos.

I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic regarding Trophys but they are
made to go places on.

Hey Kevin!

Funny meeting you here ...

I definitely prefer the Bill Mayer seat over the stock seat, and sold
the stock seat to someone who's sending it to Rick Mayer to be redone.

But I wonder if the AirHawk does anything for the "forward slide"
which I'm still experiencing, although not nearly as bad as on the stock.

A friend who races (and shouldn't any more) said that "basically your
privates should be up against the tank."

I suppose, never having ridden that way, I don't feel like starting
now, but perhaps the Trophy isn't meant to be sat on in an upright
position?

Being new to the bike, I don't know for sure.

best, Leon

with this cushion you can move it from bike to bike so you have a
great seat on ALL your bikes.

It sprang a leak and went flat. (It's not a perfect world) So that was
4500 miles over the week-end on the stock seat. Yikes! I'm fixing the
Airhawk like NOW! Just like patching a bicycle tube. Nothing to it.

I have an idea on the answer to this problem is but wanted to check if
anyone on list has experienced the same and what the outcome was.

Riding home last night I noticed the fuel gauge and rev counter stopped
working, or should I say started working intermittently. About 10 miles in
to the journey the engine started running choppy. I pulled over checked the
fuses, fine, checked the indicators to see if it was all instruments, fine,
checked the tank, about 1/4 full. Filled her up at the next garage (about
1/2 a mile on) in case it was the dreaded fuel starvation problem causing
the engine problem and the instrument problems were unconnected. Carried on
the journey home and again instruments worked intermittently and I noticed
it seemed to be when accelerating or breaking hard and at roundabouts
that they worked breifly. About another 10 miles on the engine seemed like
she was struggling again so I pulled over. This time I noticed the intrument
panel lights (neutral, side-stand and oil) weren't working when switching on
the ignition. Travelled the remaining 8 miles to home and when parked on the
drive noticed the headlights going off and on when turning the handlebars.
On removing my helmet I could actually hear the electrics cutting in and out
with the turning of the bars mainly when they got to the straight ahead
position. Again this was intermittent and wasn't dependant on how far or
fast I turned the bars but normally when straight ahead. I now imagine that
the engine problems were possibly due to overheating if the fan wasn't
working along with the other instruments.

Any suggestions as to what to look for would be gratefully received.
Colleagues have suggested it may be an earthing problem and I think it may
be a wiring problem but it seems odd it just started yesterday after a week
of daily commutes and after doing a European trip 2 weeks ago and the
positioning of the wiring when turning the bars (ie not being
stretched/parted when in the straight ahead position).

BTW I'm not the most technically minded when it comes to bikes as you may
have gathered! 8¬)

Cheers

broken and/or chafed wires in and around the headstock and fork tubes.
Mine was a rats nest , with several wired that had broken due to poor
routing in that area. You'll need to remove the nose piece to get good
access to all the wiring.

Dave,

A beautifully-written trip report and not off-topic at all.
Battlegrounds are intensely personal experiences; so is riding a
motorcycle.

Thanks.

Dave!
An excellent piece! Totally 'on topic' as far as I'm concerned. The hairs
were standing on the back of my neck! Similar to the experience I went
through when I visited the war graves in northern France a couple of year
ago! Unfortunately I wasn't on the Trophy on that trip!

Don't know whether any of you remember Jason's email to the group a while ago -
but I had a look on the website, liked the look and description so took the
plunge and ordered a set of pipes.

They turned up within a few days of ordering and I think they are a first class
piece of kit.

I attach my exchange of emails with Jason.

All the best.

Hi Jason

Sorry about the delay in replying.

I have had the pipes on for about 3 weeks now and I am very impressed with them.
They look and sound excellent (make the Trophy sound like a proper motorbike).

The mechanic I use (North City Triumph - Chigwell in Essex England) absolutely
loves them (although said he should not really be fitting non-genuine Triumph
parts!). But, as your initial email to the group promised, they are louder and
meatier than stock, but not too loud. I also think I can notice an improvement
in performance (but have to say that I do not know whether this is my
imagination - as the bike sounds so good).

I will post a copy of this email to the group - as I feel completely confident
in recommending these pipes - certainly to any Trophy owner.

All the best.

Terry

Thanks to all for their input, Im noticing that almost no one had anything good
to say about the Triumph Gel seat, so I think Im gonna dump that idea. I was a
little surprised to hear all of the negative talk about the Corbin, I was
expecting more positive from that side of the aisle. But Im glad I heard what I
did because I think all along I have been really wanting to get a Rick (or is it
Bill?) Mayer seat. My next problem is does anyone know where I can pick up a
Trophy seat pan for cheap $$?
I dont want to give up stock seat (and my ride) for the time I have to wait for
the new seat to come in?

On the AirHawk pad, I appreciate the comments there as well. I have actually
been using the air hawk for almost a year now and I admit it is a comfortable
ride, problem is I just dont like that "mushy" feel it gives me when I ride. It
slides around a bit and the added height, maybe only 3/4" does make a difference
to me. Im a 31" inseam and being an Irishman I need evrey 1/4" I can get. Last
summer I was at a stop light when I shifted my weight to reach back and adjust
the airhawk pad which had slid around a bit, and that slight shift made me dump
my bike, scratch the fairing and had to put on a new blinker. Im a creature of
habit and I know its just a matter of time and i will do it again. So i think I
want to get a full comfortable seat so I can be a little lower.

So anyone know where I can get a seat pan please let me know, and as always
thanks in advance,

The stock setting did not work out well for the front tire. I fitted the
Avons to both my Trophy and the wifes Sprint, the fronts started to develop

and the problem is gone now.

Hi Sean,

Here are the two links (they're two separate people - maybe a father
and son, or two brothers ... but apparently entirely different
operations):

http://billmayersaddles.com/october25homepage.html

http://www.rickmayercycle.com/

To add another two cents, I sadly, narrowly missed a slightly used
Rick Mayer saddle on eBay. But, as I said before, was fortunate
enough to win the Bill Mayer. If I hadn't, I would have been talking
to Rick myself.

I sold my stock seat (to someone sending it to Rick Mayer) on eBay for
$118 including shipping. That seems to be about the range, around
$90-100, pre-shipping. And I think they come up from time to time.

best, Leon

Keep your eyes on this forum. That's how I found an extra seat from a
member last summer. He was just far enough away to make for a great day
out on the Trophy. Had every intention of sending the spare seat out to
Rick Mayer over the winter, but I never got around to it.
Trophy seats also show up with regularity on Ebay. If my recollection
serves me, I don't believe I've ever seen one go for more than $40 -
$50.
Good Luck

is an oil seal inside the sprocket cover that the clutch pushrod
passes through by any chance???

I have an oil leak that is coming round the clutch pushrod and
