like your opinions on vents or no vents.
Benefits/disadvantages of either?

Hey everyone,

I am selling my 99 Trophy 1200 some of you know it. It is Platinum,
which is a great color for this bike. It has just over 12,400 on it
at has been serviced regularly. It had new brakes put on at 9900
miles and a new set of tires at 11,000. It has cruise control and a
short sport windscreen which makes the bike look cool and keeps the
rider cooler on hot days. I also have the side bags, a luggage rack
and an aftermarket trunk. I took it to NY and back last year and it
is a great highway touring bike. It is also great for your better
half. The Passenger seat is about as comfy as they get as per my
wife. I rarely ride it now plus I have the Daytona that I would like
to start dressing up a bit. It's hard for the wife and I to get on it
together with our children dictating our schedules so much lately.
I would like $6000 for it or possible trade plus cash for another
Triumph. If any of you know anybody who has interest please contact
me. I am located in Fayetteville GA.

Here is a pic of it loaded down from the NY trip -

Note that the MCN report was done on the "Tri-Synthetic" Mobil-1, which is now
unavailable.

The current "SuperSynth" is a different animal...

I use red top Mobil 1 15W50 for $22/5 quarts from Walmart. It was
rated very well in MCN report and less than half Triumph oil price.

I have the vents in my 2002 1200 and there is almost no back pressure from the
shield at any speed and the noise level is much reduced from the stock screen.

I would _not_ order the version with the adjustable vent. The design
is IMO cheesy and looks bad as well. I ordered an XL with the
adjustable vent and when it arrived it was already coming loose from
the windshield. The airflow though it was not enough to bother in
any case. To Clearviews credit, they took it back with nary a word
and sent a replacement with the "cat eye" non adjustable vents.

I cant say if the "cat eye" vents really make that much of a
difference or not. There is not a great deal of air flow though them
anyway. There is still some backflow to the wind, but not really
enough to notice. I dont know how much there would be without the
vents. Maybe I will duct tape them up tonight and do a test. I also
do not know how much water would come through the vents in the event
of rain. Sorry, but I plan to avoid testing this one for as long as
possible.

I do like my XL Clearview. It really cuts down the buffeting and
helmet noise and make for a much more pleasent ride. I am 5'11" and
I just see over the top. A perfect fit and money well spent.

I agree. I had one on an early screen and it was crap. Didn't fit right, and
leaked.

Neither can I, but I have them, and have no problems.

Phil, My used Trophy came with an XL Clearview screen with a
horizontal closeable vent. I'm 5'8' and it was too tall for me. I
ordered another vented one but in a large. I think it might be too
tall for me also. I am glad I have the vent. Last summer I was
riding in Death Valley. It is well worth the extra cost. Maybe you
can ride somebodys Trophy that has a Clearview screen. I live in
Kansas City, come on by and try it.

I have a 97 California 900 that had the cat. inserts, after removing
them I wished I hadn't. The result was slower acceleration on the
bottom end. Conclusion is that Triumph tuned the California models
for the additional back pressure. Instead of trying to retune the
engine I installed some cheap mini baffles in the place of the cat.
inserts, that brought the excelleration back up to normal,(California
normal that is). If you pull the slip-ons off and what appears to be
a porious plug in the end of your header pipes you have catalytic
convertors.

Point taken. WalMart's even more arrogant than any of the oil
companies, though, and has had a far more corrosive effect on its
competition than they have had on theirs. I also don't care for the
"cheaper is better and crappy is good enough if it's cheap" mindset
they've instilled in way too many people in the U.S., and I won't even
mention their business practices.

I won't bore you with the rest of the rant and it's waaaay off-topic
anyway.

I use my XL with cat eye vents October to May. I am 5-9 with a 30"
inseam (tall torso) and a Corbin seat. Not slouching I can see over
the top with a clean view of the road ~3 car lengths ahead, anything
closer is thru the screen and no big deal. The vents help
tremendously from being pushed forward into the bars at speed and I
wouldn't be without them. If the XL is too tall, you can always trim
it down. If I were to rate the stock screen a 7 for noise &
turbulence (10 being the worse), I would say the XL Clearview is
about a 4 and believe it or not is far less susceptible in side gusts
than the stock. The obvious disadvantage is hot weather riding and
keeping cool.

Good Luck,

Tony D. '01 1200 (Clearview Sportscreen June-September)

Is it possable to cut cat eye vents in stock screen? Has any one

I think Bob could have a good point there. Also , along with that I
would think you'd have to have a partially plugged screen on the petcock
and perhaps also your floats are malfunctioning or badly adjusted.

Assuming that your idle speed is good, see if the mechanic is checking the
floats in the carbs. It sounds like you are starving because of the floats
being out of adjustment - not allowing enough fuel in the bowls under braking.

Just a suggestion - I'm no expert.

like your opinions on vents or no vents.
Benefits/disadvantages of either?

Dale,
IMO I would cancel the Ohlins and get the entry level PENSKE. I
live in CT. USA and I had my PENSKE in about one week! Besides I
think it is a better shock for the money even though it does not have
a remote preload adjuster.

Beardg>>I had the EXACT thing happen after a service...It is the choke shaft
not fully returning on all the carbs, even though it SEEMS like it is. A bit of
corrosion builts up on the shaft that goes thru the carbs and holds the
enrichener(Choke) on...Then when you hit the brakes hard the gas splashes
forward
and floods the bike....Work the shaft on all the carbs with your hands while
douching with WD40 heavily.Chances are one is not returning to off....
