HI All, I have just took delivery of my new 2002 trophy (after my
last one got nicked), the question is that this one seems to throw
water and dirt all over the back of the pillion passenger (I never
noticed it on the 1997 model).

I've had a look round to find an extension for the rear guard but to
no avail can anyone help and point me in the right direction.

regards Flowerbed

Nope - definitely out riding. 22c Bright sunshine - monthly RAT
ride. Delightful. Trophy hammering.
Coast to coast just South of Auckland - Hauraki Gulf was the
most amazing Tropical blue against the 'Irish' green countryside
and the Coromandels (Mountain Range Peninsula) in the
distance looked quite spectacular as we dropped down the hill

Thanks for your input John.

I should have explained, the power supply for the grips is taken from the spare
multiplug on the main harness.

The purpose, according to the instructions, of the brake light switch is:

"Switching for the handlebar grips relay is to be taken from the front right
brake light switch"

Also, I think I was wrong to describe the 2 black wires as neutrals - I actually
think the correct term is switched lives.

Anyway I now have the grips working. In fact I think they were actually working
all along - but because I was expecting the switch to light up, and it didn't -
I thought it was dead (idiotically I didn't think to feel the grips to see if
they got hot!) .

I am not out of the woods however. Now the brake light stays on all the time!!

Any ideas as to why this is would be welcome. I can't help feeling it must be
something really simple - but my brain (simple as it is) cannot fathom it at
present.

All the best

Terry

grips) to the brakelight switch and then connecting the live wire from the sub

test bulb) - and the neutral wire from the sub harness to the switch connection.
So you are supposed to end up with 2 lives and two neutrals all connected to the
brakelight
> switch....

Terry,

That doesn't sound right at all. I just had the nose off the front of my bike
twice recently, and studied the wiring and the heated grips wiring while it was
off and visible. I have an 00 Trophy like yours. The heated grip power source
wire plugs into the accessory wire coming from the fuse box - the grips power
source wire is made to plug into it. I can't remember the colo(u)rs but if you
look up under the nose piece (take the chin panel off obviously) and follow the
harness out of the
fuse box, you should find a free wire coming out of the harness with an
electical connection on it, which is the accessory fuse wire you want. The hot
wire of the grips wiring shoulds simply plug into that - I forget where the
ground went. All you need is the power and ground wires. There is no way
anything is routed through the brake light switch or anything.

The grips wiring is pretty simple. The power goes to center terminal of the
switch. In the "High" position, the power is fed out through a regular wire to
the two grips. In the "Low" position, it is fed out instead through a
resistance wire (the brownish one) and then onto the grips, lowering the
voltage. People have put rheostats in lieu of the resistance wire to better
control the heat levels. I had always wanted to put a small pilot light into
the switch body, but having taken the
entire switch apart, could not find a way to do it. An easy and attractive way
to make a small pilot though is to just buy a small 12V LED - I found a nice
little one about 1/4" in diameter from Radio Shack. Drill a small hole in the
panel near the switch to fit the LED, then just connect the positive LED wire to
either of the grip outlet terminals on the switch, the other side of the LED to
a ground. I just stuck the bare wire over the terminal then forced the spade
over it, holding it
on quite tightly without soldering or anything. It will then light up when the
switch is in either the Hi or Lo position, since the grip wiring is like a "Y",
where there will be voltage back to the switch on either leg of the Y, but one
leg is wired with the resistance wire, the other with the regular wire. I am no
electrician, but it works fine, and looks kind of professional. I am sure
someone on the list could figure out a way to put two LED's in, so only one lit
up on Lo, the other on
Hi.

Happy hunting there. Give the list a holler is you get it sorted, and perhaps
you could post the wire colors and such for the archives.

Terry,

I have the Triumph heated grips fitted to my 1995 Trophy, was a kit for a 96
model that Triumph said could not be fitted, fitted fine with a little
modification. Assuming the later kits are wired basically the same here is
how they work. The two wire harness (supplied with the kit) to the front
brake light switch is not for power, it is to deactivate the heated grips
when the brake is applied. This is keep from discharging the battery when
stopped. Seems that the alternator is not powerful enough at 300 watt. When
you apply the brake it activates the relay (supplied with the kit) to open
the circuit, deactivating the grips. Use a test light to figure out which
wire goes where. If you need details of the wire colors email me off list and
I will draw a schematic and email it to you.

Excellent, almost there!

I'm starting to understand now - I hadn't realised there was a relay,
not that it matters much for our purposes.

One of the black wires at the front brake light switch is live (with
ignition on) and this will feed the relay coil. T'other black wire at
the brake switch is indeed a switched live, and wanders off to the
brake light bulb, which is backed with earth. So when it gets 12V on
it, the bulb lights.

I suspect you've got the relay and/or grips earth (black) connected to
this wire, so that you're feeding 12V through the relay coil/grips
onto the brake light switched live, hence lighting the bulb.

The cure would be to find a proper earth for the wire presently
connected to the switched live. Job's a good 'un!

Just think - toasty fingers tomorrow!

John

><PRE>looking at 2nd hand bikes - is performance and economy much different?

There is more "grunt" in the 1200 and in my opinion (IMO) it is a
smoother bike to ride. It is heavier and it does drink slightly more
fuel per mile (reducing the tank range to about 155 miles) but the
feeling of power (especially when 2 up) is well worth the extra. The
1200 is still produced, the 900 was stopped in 2001 however apart from
the engine everything is the same.

In 1999 the Trophy was tuned differently to produce 108bhp at the crank
and to provide a smoother ride, earlier models provided 124bhp. Some
members of this group have added different profile camshafts and
exhausts (etc.) to achieve 145bhp.

I have a some examples of the differences on my website in the "models"
section of the "Trophy's" page.
<URL:http://www.saslimited.demon.co.uk/bike/newbike/>

They are both excellent bikes but the 1200 is better especially in blue

I highly recommend the Village Idiots mail list for posting crap. It's
actually encouraged there. Just motorcycles riders, mostly BMW, some
Triumph and others. You can even get T Shirts :) You can sub at:
