AARGH! my engine oil is full of petrol!   Message List

RE: [TriumphTrophy] Re: AARGH! my engine oil is full of petrol!

I had a similar problem with some lawn equipment where the float
stuck and the gas leaked into the crankcase. The mechanic that fixed it for
me said that "watered down oil" [watered down with petrol, that is.] is very
dangerous in the crankcase and could explode and cause major damage. I would
definitely change the oil before trying to fire it up again!
In my case it was bad petrol and some dirt was blocking open the
float valve.
Good luck.

Kev,

If fuel is flowing constantly, it must be a faulty float valve in the
offending carb. I have never tried replacing such a part, so cannot comment
on the difficulty. If you have not left the fuel tap on the prime setting,
then that must be faulty also I'm afraid.

Personally, I'd get that solved and then try running the bike again.
Hopefully the 'watered' down oil won't have harmed much.

If it were me, I'd simply buy a set of second hand carbs from eBay and swap
those on.

Martin.

... Yes, I did leave the fuel tap on prime. Would this have caused the flooding? Kev...

Kev, Leaving the fuel tap on prime means the fuel tap flows fuel constantly. The fuel flow should be stopped when the carb float bowls all fill up. Leaving the...

If you had a faulty needle valve on one of your carbs then yes it would. The prime setting on the tank tap leaves the tap open whereas the other settings are...

... Kev, I agree with the other responses, that you had some dirt hold the float needle open, allowing the carb to flood the engine. As a preventative...

I found a constant drip of petrol coming out of the middle carb intake into the airbox. The o rings in the float assembly must be a tight fit or fuel will leak...

Ethanol gas doesn't do them any good either! That's the problem I had with on of my pieces of equipment. The o rings were designed before the Ethanol arrived...

You are probably correct. What is not dripping into the airbox is flowing down the intake into the crankcase. Can be a dangerous situation I am told. [I don't...
