Bud,
When I bought my '98 Trophy 1200 used, it came with a relatively new set of
ME880's installed. I had absolutely no issues riding them, touching pegs down
etc.

I will say, I've never known any tire that "should" go > 42psi cold --- 48 seems
downright scary to me.
When the tire is that inflated (cold), it's pretty damned hard, and you're
really losing out on some of the tires ability to deform and deflect bumps.
