wikipedia says the 2009 trix is smaller interior wise by 4 cuft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Matrix

I also suspect an inconsistency in EPA ratings across various vehicles. I think I have seen some Ford SUV's with EPA gas mileage numbers similar to the Toyota
