I too am interested in bumpers, but have no leads.
Note that Scott in San Diego had some Moss Motors Sprite bumpers hanging
around, made up simple plate adapters, and they looked just fine. Hell,
other than another 800 owner, who would know the difference.

At one time Mike Foertsch was able to sell me new wheel covers, for less
than the cost of re plating. I do not know if they are still available.

Hah! That was back when the Yen was at 125 not 75, like now.

I have extra hub caps, new and used. Email me and we can negotiate offline.

Subject: Rear main seal help
mspielberg94546

My shop has the engine out on the Publica, and I need some help from
someone who has taken one of these apart before.
Yes, a prior owner has had this apart, and as a result, I have no idea
what the rear seal retainer is supposed to look like. The seal is in,
half cocked, and has lots of sealant goo applied all over the place.
The repair manual has information about putting the crankshaft into a
press, and using a special tool. But it also says that the seal can be
replaced without removing the crank.

As I understand it, there is an oil seal retainer, out of aluminum. The
oil seal retainer seems to be held in place by a snap ring. My question
is, what is the aluminum oil seal retainer supposed to look like in the
inside of its bore. If I designed this thing, it would have a stepped
bore, with the seal pressed in from the engine side, and then seal and
aluminum retainer held in place by the snap ring. At this time, the
seal appears to have been (partially) pressed in from the outside, and
retained by nothing. Could someone take a look and tell me how the
aluminum oil seal retainer is supposed to be made so that I can put the
engine back together. My retainer may have been modified at some time to
accept an incorrect seal.

And a word to the wise... If you misplace your oil filler cap, (the one
with the passage for the engine blow by to get out of the crankcase via
the road draft tube), do not replace the oil filler cap with a solid
piece. I promise that the engine blow by is enough to ruin the rear
main seal.

Matt,
Go to "Rich's Repairs" photo folder. I put up plenty of pictures.

Do also go to the file section and download the 700 engine manual. If you try to
remove the cast iron ring without a little heat you can end up cracking the cast
iron. Been there, done that.

Remove all bolts and use the 3 unused hole to gently "Pull" the unit out.

Don't forget the little tiny seal inside the shaft too!

Not gonna touch the cast iron ring. Though I like that the ring has its own built in puller, just like the brake drums.

My curiosity was just about the way the seal retainer ring works.  The parts blow up shows the crank, the bearing, then the seal and then the retainer, as though the seal is mounted "inside" the retainer, and then retainer and seal are placed onto the crank and held in place with the retaining ring. If the retaining ring does not have an inner lip, then it should be possible to just pull the old seal, and mount a replacement seal without removal of the retaining ring.

I will have to look to see if there is a tiny seal inside the shaft, on the mighty slush box.

Hi,

Last Wednesday I attended the debut of the latest Toyota Sports Car , the FR-S which was inspired by the Sports 800.

And my 800 was invited to join the Toyota heritage performance vehicles that were owned by the Toyota Museum, it was an honor to join the elite models and represent for our group.

The FR-S gets its core inspiration from three Toyota models, the Sports 800, 2000GT and the Corolla GT-S. The Sports 800’s most important inspiration to the FR-S is its innovative and unique combination of a front-mounted boxer engine in a rear-wheel drive configuration. The flat architecture of the boxer engine, allows it to be mounted low, dropping the center of gravity down, resulting in sporty handling characteristics. For this reason, the FR-S adopted this distinctive combination

Last question/request. Can anyone get me the approximate thickness of the rear
main seal. I can pull the old one, which is in at a slant, but if it is wrong,
I wold like to correct that aspect of the problem. It is fairly strait forward
to get the ID from the crankshaft, and the OD from the aluminum retainer, but I
do not know the correct thickness.

Unless, of course, someone has a NOS piece laying around.

Please stop! Somebody is trying to register an owner with bogus chassis numbers.

I have enough trouble keeping track of the real owners let alone being pinged by
bogus stuff.

Yes, I know the person is not a joiner, but I don't need the headache.

Thanks for trying. I almost fell for it except one of the vin numbers is now in
Germany.

I pulled the seal. It came right out of the aluminum retaining ring with
no problem. (I did not break anything)
The seal was wrong, wrong, wrong.
ID was really sloppy. OD was undersized, and they used shim stock to
fill in the gap between the seal and the retainer, and lots and lots of
Permatex.

Now, if we can get a correct seal, we have the rear main seal leak
problem solved.

Wow, I can hear the wimpering all the way from Seattle!

The correct seal is a TB3 60 82 12. Your local bearing house may or may not have
it. I bought a bunch out of eastern Europe (Czech Republic to be exact) that are
not the plain metal exterior, but have a rubber coating on the outside. Seems to
me they should seal better. Either way, they are 60 82 12 seals and I can put
the name of poor Mr. Matt on one.

Do I hear a "Czech in the mail" again?

Okay I don’t know squat about oil seal types. The manual calls for a TB seal. Sometimes listed as a TB2 or TB3. I believe the ones I have that are coated are called TC.

Anyone want to lecture us on the difference?

The only thing I have found is that the TC gives better OD Sealing.

Both are Dual lip with a garter spring.

I was looking at the two images, and wondering...

http://www.gbsa.com/oil-seal-types.php  shows just what we figgered out, but nothing additional.

The "seal" portion of the seal is identical between the B and C type, with rubber on the OD on the TC.

I am considering having a run of bumper rubber strips made up. They
should end up being less than $50 a piece, if I make up a run of 30 or
more.
If interested, please send me an e-mail.
No promises at this time, just trying to get a feel for the level of
interest to determine the number to order.

They came in two series. The one I will be using for a sample is 1.25
inches thick, 7.75 tall and about 2 inches wide.

And if someone has a "perfect" one to use as a master, I would love to
borrow it.

If interested, please send me an e-mail.
No promises at this time, just trying to get a feel for the level of
interest to determine the number to order.

They came in two series. The one I will be using for a sample is 1.25
inches thick, 7.75 tall and about 2 inches wide.

And if someone has a "perfect" one to use as a master, I would love to
borrow it.

Rich provided me with a NOS bumper to be copied. His original did not
have the mold marks, so the copies will be smooth sided as well.
I had the studs made up, and sent off the studs and the prototype to be
copied. It should take about a month.

I will let everyone know when they are received.
