Friday has always been the "Tillamook trail ride", this year I'd like to do the
same. Anyone interested?

Sheridan.

Syncro Safari to the Sierras ended up being a lot like my first sexual
experience--<WBR>-I was all alone! Was supposed to hook up with Bill around 5pm
at
Portal Forebay over the Kaiser Pass road above Huntington Lake. Left Sunday
morning hoping to dodge traffic (hah!), then got stuck on the 5 for over an
hour due to a brush fire in Castaic. It was unbelievably hot in the
valley, and I was over two hours late getting there, and there was no sign of
Bill (multiple car problems on the drive up the mountain, as I found out
later). It was still warm but very nice at the little lake, and I got my
favorite campsite. I tied on my favorite lure and caught a couple of trout
while
listening for familiar-sounding engines chugging up the road. I'd been to
this area many times to fish and camp with my daughter. This improbable
one-lane road was cut back in the '30's to build Edison and Florence lakes.
It's
open about 5 months a year, and is off most people's radar screens. It's
drop-dead gorgeous, and a great place to hang (free camping, alas, is no
more. This year, they're charging a whopping $16/night for the few spots in
no-reservation unimproved campgrounds (no water, pit toilets). You can still
camp for free elsewhere, but need a wilderness permit, and supposedly, no
fires). In all the years I've been coming up here, I'd never really explored
the off-road potential of the area, and the purpose of the trip was to see
what was beyond the blacktop. AND---lurking at the top of the Kaiser pass
was the ass end of the infamous Dusy/Ershim trail ("makes the Rubicon look
like a 4-lane highway" according to 4-Wheeler). Being alone put a serious
crimp in any plans for exploration, however. I spent part of Monday driving
to the other campgrounds looking for a bilious shade of green Syncro, and
took a few jeep trails but I was miles from anybody and didn't feel like
pressing my luck. I did drive the Bear Creek Diversion road, which I had been
over before---m ost of the way in granny gear, fun but not challenging. In
the late afternoon, I got back to my campsite and got into some fabulous
trout fishing before the sun went down. I decided to pack up and head home
Tuesday, with the idea of scouting areas for possible Syncro meets. Vermillion
is nice, but it's at the end of the line at Edison Lake. Ward Lake is
gorgeous, but has very few campsites, and they always seem to be filled. I
checked out Sample Meadows on the way out, but was unimpressed. At the summit
of the Kaiser Pass is a sign reading White Bark Vista, which I knew was
where the Dusy/Ershim terminated. Well, I was here anyway, let's see exactly
what the deal is. My GPS read 9660 feet when I got to the look-out point, a
stunning 360-degree panorama of everwhere I'd just been. There's supposed to
be a gate at the trailhead, but I didn't see it. There was, however, a
pucker-factor 4 upgrade that looked like it went somewhere. There wasn't a
soul around, and it was five miles back to the blacktop, but I just had to see
what the thing looked like. I scooted up rocks OK, and found the gate
about half a mile up the trail. The trees surrounding the end of the run make
it look like the opening of some kind of gnarly cave. I walked the first
part of the trail and came upon an immediate deal-breaker, about a 30-inch
high What was supposed to be a mini Syncro Safari to the Sierras ended up being

Danny & others,
We'll be at Atkisson Group Camp, about 7 miles west of Trout Lake
Washington. It appears that Trout Lake isn't even a real town, but at
least it's a
fork in the road that's recognized by Google Maps.
Trout Lake is about 22 miles north of White Salmon on the north side of
the
Columbia River gorge.
We'll be out most days, so stopping by "Camp Syncro" around dinner time
would probably be best to meet some Syncronauts and join us at the
campfire.

Jim Davis

Jim,
Do you know if a Washington offroad vehicle permit is required anywhere
we
will be adventuring? Oregon requires them & I have one, but not for
Washington. I could not see anything on the G.P forest website. Let me
know if
you found anything out about it.

Danny & others,
We'll be at Atkisson Group Camp, about 7 miles west of Trout Lake
Washington. It appears that Trout Lake isn't even a real town, but at least it's
a
fork in the road that's recognized by Google Maps.
Trout Lake is about 22 miles north of White Salmon on the north side of the
Columbia River gorge.
We'll be out most days, so stopping by "Camp Syncro" around dinner time
would probably be best to meet some Syncronauts and join us at the campfire.
Regards,
Jim Davis

Jim,
Do you know if a Washington offroad vehicle permit is required anywhere we
will be adventuring? Oregon requires them & I have one, but not for
Washington. I could not see anything on the G.P forest website. Let me know if
you found anything out about it.
Thanks! See you next week.

Here in Oregon, if you are offroad in public lands, an ORV permit is required,
but I never needed one in Northern Wa. I could not find anything about an ORV
pass for this forest anywhere either, but I do know that for parking at
trailheads, etc. in the G.P Forest areas, a NW Forest pass will be required. One
per vehicle. I think we won't need them at the campground, but on the day trips
out, we might. Those should be available at the ranger station. Details here:
http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/04passes/
Jim, have you split up the duties for Taco Night yet?

I have not seen anything about a permit for Washington. In
other places
I've seen permits are only required for non-street legal vehicles like
certain motorcycles and ATVs.

To Winson in Portland, Oregon.
As for the problem you had with the smoke in your engine compartment, I had
the exact same thing happen to me and it was the air conditioning compressor
freezing up. I took a knife and cut the a/c belt and the problem went away. I
too caught mine before the belt actually burned in half and it was also
screeching really loudly. Dan Harvey from Salem, Or.

Hi Winson,
This sounds like something hard to diagnose via email. I'd have it towed to one
of the great shops in town, Heckman, A&P or even Halsey. It's probably simple,
but it could be a fuel line, so be careful.
This list is not so much an advice list, but more of an offroad trip planning
list. Are you a Wetwesties member yet? They love to give advice over there &
actually have some traffic, unlike this more specific list.
Good luck,

Hi,
I need help! I was just getting my 86 Westfalia (2.1 liter, water cooled)
ready for a camping trip on Wednesday and turned on the air conditioner for the
first time in a long time. It ran fine for about 5 minutes then I noticed smoke
coming out the outside rear vents. I immediately shut off the engine. The
smoke subsided, but now the van will not start. It sounds like screeching
banshees and does not turn over. I lifted the engine cover and noticed some
fluid spray on some of the hoses towards the front (opposite the oil fill cap)
of the motor. All the belts are intact and show no signs of damage. No signs
of burnt starter or other essential parts.
Any guesses to as what just happened? Don't think I'll be taking the van
camping...: (
Thanks in advance,

I have an 86 syncro with sunroof with a 2.2 subaru installed.. The install was
done by Leon Korkin who did a detailed and masterful job of installing the
engine. He came to my home in Moab in late fall and worked under less than
ideal conditions. when it came time for the engine to be started no luck and it
got cold and he had to delay completion to return to CA.
Here's is what I have done with my limited ability to get the car to run: New
battery and starter. Engine is getting fuel to the injector with 36 #s of
pressure. spark plugs are firing and there is power to the injector. I suspect
the injectors are not getting fuel for some reason but am not sure how to check
as I can't seem to get the injectors out to test.
I am frustrated as I have spent thousands on this conversion with new tranny
rebuild, decoupler and many' many new parts.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

REMINDER
======================================================================
Hello SyncroNuts!
Here's the reminder registration announcement and further information for
Syncro Safari, Mount St. Helens '09 coming up July 26 - August 1, 2009.
Registration will open TOMORROW, FRIDAY, MAY 22. Read on. The
registration
process is described below and registration will open in 1 week. There
have been a number of people inquiring about attending this trip and I've
told everyone so far that registration is not yet open and no spots are
held.
REGISTRATION WILL BE OPEN ON FRIDAY, MAY 22 at 12 NOON PACIFIC TIME.
LOCATION
------------------
Syncro Safari, Mount St. Helens '09 is near Mount St. Helens, in
southwest
Washington. More specifically it is in the Gifford Pinchot National
Forest
which occupies the region between Mount St. Helens and Mt. Adams. This
area has a lot of recreation and site seeing to offer as well as
4-wheeling.
Of course it's a very interesting geologic area.
SYNCRO SAFARI IS FAMILY FRIENDLY
----------------------------------------------------------
Syncro Safari is not a bash our Syncros "guy's only" event. It's intended
to allow you to get to know other Syncronauts and their families while
doing some fun 4-wheeling and exploring interesting places. So, bring the
family! Right now I know of one 10 year old girl and one 12 year old girl
that
I'm bringing.
ITINERARY
------------------
The event will be Sunday, July 26 to Saturday, August 1.
Here's the preliminary schedule:
- Sunday, July 26 Arrive, set up camp, meet new friends
- Monday, July 27 4x4 Trip!
- Tuesday, July 28 Open day, free for individual recreation, Taco Night
Potluck
- Wednesday, July 29 4x4 Trip!
- Thursday, July 30 Open day, free for individual recreation
- Friday, July 31 4x4 Trip!
- Saturday, Aug 1 Say goodbyes and head home
CAMPING & COSTS:
-----------------------------
The campsite reserved for Syncro Safari, Mount St. Helens '09 is in the
Gifford Pinchot National Forest southeast of Mount St. Helens in the
Trout
Lake area. It's a large group site in a wooded area that can accommodate
a
large group.
There is a paved road to the Atkisson Group Camp and in the winter it's a
snow park. It has a small shelter and toilet. Two large paved parking lots
with lots of room. Flat terrain for hiking or biking. 2,700 Ft.
elevation.
Numerous activities include biking, hiking, berry and mushroom picking in
season. Near Guler Ice Cave. The site has a toilet, picnic table and fire
ring. There is no electricity or water at the site. Water is available at
a
nearby campground 2.5 miles away.
More info is at:
_http://www.fs.http://www.fhttp://www.http://www.fhttp://www.fs.http://www._

ctCode=NRSO&parkId=71571&t
opTabIndex=CampingSpot)
Cost of the campsite at Atkisson is $429 which I have paid for in
advance.
Although allowing for up to 10 Syncros, I'm creating a "break-even" point
for me at 7 Syncros including mine. This means the camping cost is $429/7
=
$61 per Syncro. This is for the 6 nights arriving July 26, departing
August
1. If we get less than 7 Syncros, I will accept the loss and if there are
more than 7, I will apply the funds toward something to enhance the
Syncro
Safari event. Camping fees are not refundable. This is not a profitable
operation for me.
4x4 ROUTES
---------------------
Syncro Safari routes provide "mild to moderate" 4-wheeling which a stock
Syncro with off-road tires can accomplish. This will be family friendly
and
provide little chance for damaging your Syncro. The specific routes
selected will be chosen not just for 4-wheeling but also scenery,
historic
interest, geologic interest, and hopefully a feature or two such as a
view, a
lake, a peak, a pass, or other feature to add interest to the trail.
Routes have not yet been selected but this year I expect the routes to be
more on the "mild" side rather than "moderate" This area is not know for
major 4-wheeling but I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun.
POT LUCK DINNER - TUESDAY
-------------------------------------------------
You'll need to provide for all your own food except on Tuesday evening,
July 28th we'll coordinate our efforts and have a group Taco Night
Potluck
dinner to share. Once registration is done, we'll arrange this so that we
don't all bring dessert. Hmmm, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. :-)
OTHER NEARBY ACTIVITIES:
---------------------------------------------
There's plenty to do in the area while we're not 4-wheeling including:
Hiking, Fishing, Biking, Napping, Rock collecting, Sleeping, Running,
Bird
watching, Canoeing/Kayaking, Boat rentals, Snoozing, Site seeing,
repairing
your Syncro :-(

WEATHER
-----------------
Weather in southwest Washington is fairly warm and clear in late July.
For
this trip I've opted to spring for the Premium Weather Package so here's
what to expect:
- Monday, 7-26: Highs: Low 80's Overnight lows: Low 50's Clear, Rain: 0%
- Tuesday, 7-27: Highs: Mid 80's Overnight lows: Mid 50's Scattered
Clouds, Rain: 5%
- Wednesday, 7-28: Highs: Low 80's Overnight lows: Upper 40's Scattered
Clouds, Rain: 5%
- Thursday, 7-29: Highs: High 70's Overnight lows: Mid 40's Clear,
Rain:
0%
- Friday, 7-30: Highs: High 70's Overnight lows: Low 50's Clear, Rain:
1%
The Premium Package costs a bit more, but it's usually worth it!
OK, I can't actually order specific weather - but I'm hoping descriptions
above should be close. :-)

Syncronuts,
Here's further information for Syncro Safari, Mount St. Helens '09 coming up
July 26 - August 1, 2009
Registration is not yet open, but the registration process is described
below.
LOCATION
------------------
Syncro Safari, Mount St. Helens '09 is near Mount St. Helens, in southwest
Washington.
More specifically it is in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest which
occupies the region between Mount St. Helens and Mt. Adams. This area has a lot
of
recreation and site seeing to offer as well as 4-wheeling. Of course it's a
very interesting geologic area.
SYNCRO SAFARI IS FAMILY FRIENDLY
---------------------------------------------------------------
Syncro Safari is not a bash our Syncros "guy's only" event. It's intended to
allow you to get to know other Syncronauts and their families while doing
some fun 4-wheeling and exploring interesting places. So, bring the family!
Right now I know of one 10 year old girl and one 12 year old girl that I'm
bringing.
Helens in the Trout Lake
area. It's a large group site in a wooded area that can accommodate a large
group.
The site has a toilet, picnic table and fire ring.
There is no electricity or water at the site. Water is available at a nearby
campground 2.5 miles away.
More info is at:
_http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/campgrounds/sites/atkisson-group.shtml_
(http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/campgrounds/sites/atkisson-group.shtml)
and
_http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Atkisson_Wa/r/campgroundDetails.do?contract
Code=NRSO&parkId=71571&topTabIndex=CampingSpot_
de=NRSO&parkId=71571&topTabI
ndex=CampingSpot)
Cost of the campsite at Atkisson is $429 which I have paid for in advance.
Although allowing for up to 10 Syncros, I'm creating a "break-even" point for
me at 7 Syncros including mine. This means the camping cost is $429/7 =
$61 per Syncro. This is for the 6 nights arriving July 26, departing August 1.
If we get less than 7 Syncros, I will accept the loss and if there are more
than 7, I will apply the funds toward something to enhance the Syncro Safari
event. Camping fees are not refundable. This is not a profitable operation
for me.
4x4 ROUTES
---------------------
Syncro Safari routes provide "mild to moderate" 4-wheeling which a stock
Syncro with off-road tires can accomplish. This will be family friendly and
provide little chance for damaging your Syncro. The specific routes selected
will be chosen not just for 4-wheeling but also scenery, historic interest,
geologic interest, and hopefully a feature or two such as a view, a lake, a
peak, a pass, or other feature to add interest to the trail.
Routes have not yet been selected but this year I expect the routes to be
more on the "mild" side rather than "moderate" This area is not know for major
4-wheeling but I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun.
POT LUCK DINNER - TUESDAY
-------------------------------------------------
You'll need to provide for all your own food but on Tuesday evening, July
28th we'll coordinate our efforts on having a group Taco Night Potluck dinner
to share. Once registration is done, we'll arrange this so that we don't all
bring dessert. Hmmm, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. :-)
OTHER NEARBY ACTIVITIES:
---------------------------------------------
There's plenty to do in the area while we're not 4-wheeling including:
Hiking, Fishing, Biking, Napping, Rock collecting, Sleeping,
Running, Bird watching, Canoeing/Kayaking, Boat rentals,
Snoozing, Site seeing, Repairing your Syncro :-(

WEATHER
-----------------
Weather in southwest Washington is fairly warm and clear in late July. For
this trip I've opted to spring for the Premium Weather Package so here's what
to expect:
- Monday, 7-26: Highs: Low 80's Overnight lows: Low 50's Clear
Rain: 0%
- Tuesday, 7-27: Highs: Mid 80's Overnight lows: Mid 50's
Scattered Clouds Rain: 5%
- Wednesday, 7-28: Highs: Low 80's Overnight lows: Upper 40's
Scattered Clouds Rain: 5%

The Premium Package costs a bit more, but it's usually worth it! OK, so I

close. :-)

See you there!
Brian,
Many, many hours of research. Internet, books, mapping software, and paper
maps. Last week I got in the mail a package of maps I ordered for the Gifford
Pinchot National Forest, the Mt. Adams Ranger District, the Cowlitz Valley
Ranger District, and the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. I love
maps and they're essential to the planning. Knowing how to navigate the
National Forest and the Recreation.gov web sites is also pretty important as
well
as good Google search skills! :-)
Also, enlisting the help of locals can be very beneficial. In 1999 the
Kirks in Montana were very helpful for the Yellowstone '99 trip. In 2000 people
from the Mammoth Lakes 4x4 community were instrumental for that years event.
More recently, Larry Chase was a big help with Tombstone '06 and Craig Spaeth
in southwestern Washington is helping with this year's adventure.
I do have a lot of fun planning these, but it is also quite time consuming.
