I see just as many VC's that are "open" as I do binding..Many barely work and the driver doesn't realize it. I have a rebuilt and a new one..Pmail for details....
I defer to the grand pooba of drive trains . would the non binding failure result from loss of fluid or broken impeller fin blade things . Mark J Lortie PhD ...

The cost of rebuilt units are almost half way to a decoupler and billet shaft. If you have the means it is a much better option than rebuilt. just another way...
I myself think prices are now in the mid $20K range, like $25K for a nice one. I have seen some nice ones recently on places like eBay not sell for the $30K...
This option (described below) is for those who never intend to have All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) functionality on the street again. This is the primary reason that...
Hi, My Syncro was in snow and mud, the rear wheels were spinning but nothing happening in front. My conclusion is that my VC is to be replaced. Any comments? ...
Seems like when they cook internally, the plates wear and there is too much clearance..so, yes the fin blade thingys go bad...The fluid is usually still in...
Concerning using the solid shaft on pavement: Why is it when I ride with my buddies skiing in their Toyota's with a normal 4x4 (not AWD) engaged they seem to...
I have just finished the machine work on the carriers. Last night I made a couple of sets of the carrier shims. If I may ask, how long is the metal brake...
To elaborate. Your Vanagon Syncro has 2 differentials. One for the rear wheels. One for the Front wheels. Most 4x4's have 3. One for the rear, one for the...
Jeff, As long as they are on a slippery surface they are the same as you for the most part…but for some they have to be very conscious of when to shift in ...
I am doing a 50degree swap into a syncro I was wondering if anyone who has done this before, or just knows the right answer. I was under the impression I...
Syncro bars are very much like the 83+ style bars except for height of the engine. You need to closely match the height and fore/aft angle of the engine to the...
I have a chance to buy my first synco. I have looked all over and it's been tough to find for the right money. I have located one 1986 that the clutch slips,...
Seems a bit on the low side to me, but..... Diff Lock? Not all Syncros had one. They are difficult to impossible to retrofit now (part availability more than...
I'll have to disagree with the idea that most 4WD vehciles have three differentials. Vehicles with traditional 4WD don't have a center differential. While in...
Heres the deal on the diff lock. The trans. thats in it came out of a van with the diff lock, But this one was not set up that way to start with. Kim Brennan...
I'd say yes if the drive train (minus the slipping clutch) is good. I paid $2200 (Ohio) for my recent monster with a great drive train but a body in fair to...
Yeah, most likely a bad VC. I've had the same thing on both of my Syncro's. Replacing the VC fixed the issue (I put a solid shaft/decoupler in one of them...
