Just wanted to let you know the rental of the drag strip is not going to happen Friday. Not enough can make it to pay the bill.
Maybe next time. There are some going tomorrow evening to the strip for test and tune if any of you want to come to that. Cost is $15 and you can make probably 8 to 10 runs if you want. Gates open at 5:00, time trials at 5:30 and a trophy race at 8:00 but you can still run test and tune if you don't want to get in the trophy race.
One of the FAST Ford guys, Steve Vanderwall and I (Ted) are trying to set up a rental of the Muncie Dragway this coming Friday, August 7th. If we can get it done, we would have the track from approximately 9:00 am until that afternoon. We should be able to get as many runs as we want. Problem is the rental fee. It is $650 and we would like to get at least 13 people so it would not cost us more than $50 each. Of course if we could get 20 or more that would be even better.
We need to know for SURE though if you would be there so we will know if we will have enough to support it. We need to know by Tuesday so we would know it would not cost anyone more than $50. If we should get say 20 then it would only be $32.50 per person.
If you can and want to get in on this, email me with your phone number so that I can contact you by either method to let you know. I can contact you by Wednesday so you will know if we can do it or not.
This is an email that Ted sent this morning and ask to forward on to you all. I know some of you wanted to get back on the track after Bean Blossom in May this may be the chance to do some tuning. We would need to make solid commitments to cover the cost of the track. If we can get enough to get the cost down it can happen. I don't want to do it my self if the cost is over $50 each. Steve is the guy setting this up and needs solid commitments by Tuesday.
If you are interested get with Ted and answer this email so a count can be made.
Later, Richard

Hi Richard,
Gotta leave in a few minutes for the strip. Got partially rained out last night. Will fill you in this evening. Steve Vander?? (427 Ford guy) wants to rent the strip next Friday if he can get enough people to go in. Can you send me the emails and phone numbers of the Bean Blossom racers if you have them? I'll get in touch with each and see if any want to do this. Cost is $650 for the day. Start at around 9:00 am and can run most of the day as I understand it. Steve is willing to pay extra to do this but if we could get 13 people that would be $50 each which I would be willing to do.
Get back with you this evening. Tomato ran good (12.96 @ 108). Traction great. I ran three runs and all were 2.0X's.

some of the nice folks here know the car. for those that don't...
my dad was in the midst of a full resto on a 64 full package 4sp R2 when he died
a little more than a year ago. since then we struggled to find all the documents
and ID plates for the car. we did find it all. we did not find a buyer willing
to make an offer.a realistic offer.
after much concideration and looking at the market the car is worth more in
parts. we just do not have the money to finish the car. my mom really wants to
cut her losses and the parts will defray some of the money dad spent on it.
the house in sedona az. where it sits is for sale. My sister in phoenix will be
selling the parts off. this will be the last effort i can make to save it as a
whole.
I have dads 64 R1. I know these cars fairly well.I wanted to save it but I am
not in a position to do so. It is a shame and a pity but reality hits hard. If
any one of you knows someone who knows someone....nows the time.
I have some pictures and a packet of parts lists a mile long.
I am going to phoenix in a 2 or 3 weeks to move the car to my sisters so she can
start the selling off.
I am going to try to attach a link to some pictures that I took when I was last

I just went back and checked again, and my production information shows seven Canadian R2 4-speed Hawks; maybe I am looking at an older list; I certainly admit there are many around who know these cars much better than myself!
Also, in response to another question that came in, I show one R2 Hawk painted Cruiser Maroon. Then again, now I am questioning how accurate my information is!

Matt,
I did this on the fly, so I can not guarantee I am 100% accurate here; Using the criteria of only looking at 1963 Hawks which came with R2-4-speed & Disc Brakes, I find 131 cars produced in South Bend. There were an additional 7 Hawks produced in Canada which had the R2 and a 4-speed, though I can not tell what brakes they had. The SouthBend production would include "package" cars, which came standard with the discs.
As far as survivors, my data is somewhat outdated, but I find that at the time, there were 51 1963 R2-4spd-disc brake Hawks accounted for from the South Bend production, and one R2-4spd Canadian built Hawk. These were know survivors at the time, and could range from show cars to parts cars.
Others may have more accurate information; if I have time, I will try to double check my math later.

That is my serial #. How many R2's had the 4 speed and disc brakes? Out of the original cars, how many of those are still on the road? In the fall of 1962, when did Studebaker start producing the '63's? I think the car companies didnt start the new production until Sept? Is that correct?

Thanks for the information on Canadian production. As you probably know, the
engine numbers would read JTSC____. Do you have any idea if any were originally
painted Crusier Maroon? Or Sylvan Green? (Two Canadian 'Spring colors')

A little mouse told me that you have all the production info. My R2 Hawk was produced 9/11/62. Yep early ..... early production. The engine # JTS1008 and I was told they started engine at JTS1005. Do you know as far as documented cars still accounted for, is mine the earliest Super Hawk still on the road? Matt

My sentiments exactly. I am just trying to get work done on my R2 Hawk which I know nothing about this high performance equipment. I think I should have stayed with the standard equipment cars. My 56 President was a piece of cake compared to this one. Too much specialty work and the 1st time I needed bumper rechroming. I have a local guy that will do small stuff. Oh well..... I do appreciate the help I have gotten from this site. Matt

We're glad you had a good time it was good having you and your brother up to Brown County. It looked like your car ran great on this Indiana track. It would be nice to have all us drag racers closer together but at least we can do it once a year. Let's all hope Ted can come down next year, we missed him.
I was wondering if you still had the 61 almost Super Lark race ready. By the way Bob that's the heavier four door Lark! The times you ran reminded me of John Raabs R1 Clone and the times he runs. It's also a low compression 289. Bob, if I remember right Tom used this car to test the 330 engine before putting the new heads and turbos on it for the Avanti. It ran much better if I remember 13.3xx@100mph with that 330 engine a couple years ago. That was with small valves and low compression.
We hope to see you again next year, maybe I'll have my Challenger ready.
Later, Richard

Got the link, thanks. Enjoyed seeing it as a spectator. I was so busy there I didn't get the time to actually watch everyone run. This allows one to view and reflect.
I took the 61 Lark to the track today for the first time in 2 plus years. Just been sitting idle and the trees were trying to destroy it. Took a lot of clean up and checking out to get it track ready. I had reinstalled that yellow block Avanti R1 I had mainly to move it around some. But the brakes were still developing some rust crust and the whole car needed some movement. And I wanted to test out a cheap ebay Holley I got. It ran ok with out any issues except for a spit stall on launch as soon as she was gassed. I think the pump squirt is not covering the initial throttle opening. Does ok in neutral but once it was loaded on the line it had that spit hesitation cough behavior. I tried one jet up change thinking I might be able to cover the leanness but it didn't. So here are the times on this dish piston, thick head gasket R-1. Track was only allowing
1/8 runs today so it was a Bean Blossom event sort of.
Run 1: 2.282 6.436 9.849 @ 72.16 (jetting at 67/74)
Run 2: 2.360 6.504 9.914 @ 72.01 (jetting at 68/74)
Car is close to 3100 lbs race weight (me too), and rear is still 3.80 with the 26 x 10 x 15 tires. Trans is powershift Avanti of course. I was happy that it ran slightly under a 10 flat so that should be a good 15.50 to 15.60 something quarter.
It's hot here today. Air was 83 with 67 % hum and 29.86 Bp. (airport readings) and track is a few miles from Richmond International.
