Just a reminder that Wheels 2006 will happen in about 4 weeks on 12
March. This event, run by the Council of ACT Motor Clubs, is
Canberras biggest annual display of classic cars - usually about 600
vehicles. It will be held on the lawns in front of Old Parliament
House from 10 am to 3 pm.
For those who don't know the area, it's worth mentioning that there
are a number of institutions (most of which have free exhibitions)
adjacent to the site or within a short drive. The National Library,
National Art Gallery, Old Parliament House, National Science centre
(Questacon) and National Archives are within walking distance. The
National Museum and Australian War Memorial are within 10 minutes
drive.
Wheels 2006 will also be the occasion when the restored 1939
Chevrolet "Canberra pie cart" will be unveiled. This van has been
restored after being found derelict some years ago. The pie cart was
a regular feature of Canberra life from the 1940s to 1970s providing
pies and sausage rolls to Commonwealth Government workers at their
offices and to local football grounds on weekends.
If you're going to come along, please get back to me - particularly
if you're coming from outside Canberra.
Cheers, Vic

It's worth noting that Colin has posted some pics of his Minx and
Rapier Convertible. Some of you may recognise the Minx from Australian
Classic Car Magazine last month. Thanks Colin, they're both good
looking cars, have to say I really like the Rapier - it would be great
to have it and the hardtop Rapier from Bathurst at Terribly British Day
in 2006.

I have a set of 5 genuine Hunter Royal 660 Rostyle wheels that are
surplus to my needs, and hence for sale. These are in good condition
for their age, certainly not immaculate - they have some minor surface
rust and would need repainting to be show standard. But they could be
used as is. Importantly, they are straight, with little evidence of
having been used to reshape kerbs. They come with 16 correct wheels
nuts (which would need rechroming to be immaculate).
The good news is that 4 of them are fitted with virtually new 175/70 x
13 radial tyres.
The even better news is the price. At $240 (pick up in Canberra) you
are virtually getting the wheels for nothing - the tyres are worth that.
I can send photos, - Let me know if interested - they will be
advertised on eBay in the next few days.
Cheers, Vic
There is a good looking Humber Super Snipe IV (located in Narrabundah
ACT) currently advertised at Carsales.com. It's registered to May 06
and asking price $4500

A few days ago I posted a message about a Humber Vogue in the Albury area
that is for sale on eBay. Ken Watts now tells me that this is actually a
Vogue Sports - an extremely rare model that was sold only in Australia.
It's a Vogue with the Rapier/Alpine type alloy head motor, twin choke carb,
boosted disc brakes. A Vogue Sports was raced one year at Bathurst 500 mile
race when that was for production cars.
To my mind, the Sports is at least as desirable as a Hillman Hustler and
there are people looking everywhere for them. This eBay car should be saved
from the crushers. If I had the room, I'd get it and store it until I had
time to fix it. If anyone wants a worthwhile project, this is it. If you
need help with transporting it to Canberra I can hire a trailer cheaply from
my club and tow it with my car. If you have a garage where you don't mind
storing it for me for 12 months, let me know
If you want to look at it again, click on this link http://www.ebay.com.au/
to go to eBay and then type the eBay number 4606024272 into the search field
and click on search
Let's see if we can't find a home for this car
Cheers, Vic
If someone were looking for an interesting project, there is currently
a Hunter-based Sunbeam Rapier fastback on ebay (number 4607085024).
These are quite rare within Australia. It's in Victoria which is a
little outside our area but I thought I'd point it out anyway. It has
no motor (but I have a suitable Royal 660/GT engine and transmission
which I might be prepared to part with for a good cause).
Cheers, Vic
Thanks to Ken and Troy for adding pics of their cars. I'd encourage
all of you to take a look - and to add pics of your own. To add photos,
you need to log into the group homepage, click on Photos in the blue
box on the left and then click on 'Create Album'. Yahoo will lead you
thru the process fairly easily.
I have also uploaded some more pics. There is a new album called
BritCarDay05. In it are 4 pics, one of 3 Alpines and a Rapier, the
other 3 are of the Rapier which is a very nice car indeed. The owner
brought it all the way from Bathurst/Orange area. There was only one
other Rootes car there, a Tiger but I don't have a pic of it. We hope
to have more Rootes cars next year!!
I have also added pics of my 'new' ADL to the VicsCars album.
Cheers, Vic
There is a Humber Vogue currently on eBay in the Albury/Wodonga area.
It's a project or more likely parts car, it does have the alloy head
motor and the body is said to be in good condition.
The other Vogue in the Teralba (newcastle area that I mentioned around
Christmas time is back on eBay again. You could probably build one
decent car from the two.
To view them, go to
http://www.ebay.com.au/
and search on the following numbers:
4606024272 (Albury)
4604346463 (Teralba)
Usual disclaimer, I have no personal knowledge of these cars

Hi all,
Back from a couple of weeks down the coast (Batemans Bay) and pleased
to announce that I am now the owner of a 1963 Hillman Australian De
Luxe (which is of course a re-badged Singer Gazelle).
Also glad to note the arrival of a couple of new members, one of whom
has an article on his Minx in the January edition of Australian Classic
Car Magazine.
Looking forward to the more shy members telling us about themselves.
Cheers, Vic
Nice
one Brian - Its not everyday you see a modified Super Snipe.A mate here
in Launceston has a Seies 5 the same colour.
I bet it does go well with the Nissan 3
litre.
The extra oomph and considerable weight reduction make it a very useful
wagon. Most important is the reduced fuel consumption, ie, 22-24mpg for
lead-footed suburban travel and up to 30 on the open road. The braking is
adequate, and so is the steering now that I have fitted
Monroe heavy-duty gas shock absorbers (# WG3049) and a pair
of Hankook 165SR15 steel radial tyres. The power-to-weight ratio seems
perfect and delivers huge acceleration without any unseemly
wheel-slip.
The 3-litre VL engine and compatible auto transmission were used
in some 1980s Holden Commodores as well as the Nissan Skyline, so it is
quite a realistic alternative to undertaking major work on a dead
original motor and/or heavy old transmission. The turbo is definitely
recommended--a whole new world of fun!
Affronted purists might note that the Series V was already being trialled
with alternative donks, including a V8, before production ceased.
So, I'm quite a casual buff, my first love being a 1928 Studebaker which needs extensive coachwork and trim. The Humber is my 'workhorse' car, being registered for daily use. I also have a 1978 Toyota Carina which is on a (Veteran Car Club) Historic licence. (In WA, the club licence costs $32 pa and can apply to any original car aged 25 years or more).
I have removed or treated all the Humber's body rust and am respraying it by degrees and restoring the interior.
I buy most of my spare parts in Melbourne. There are a few dozen Rootes and related cars in Perth, and I belong to the relevant section of the Veteran Car Club wich has regular meetings and rallies.

Hi Vic
HI guys
Im Ken from Launceston Tasmania.
Im 40 years old and work in Local government as an Information Officer.
I own a 1964 Humber Vogue Sports and a 1965 Hillman Minx both of which
can be sen in my photo album. I also own 4 Morris minors, a 1961 Rover
P4 100 and a 1961 VW Beetle 1200 so as you can see Ive got a full
garage of classics. The Rover and one Minor are under restoration, but
the others are all registered and restored or original.
Im looking for an original workshop manual supplement for the Vogue
Sports if anyone has one or a copy.
I also have a big collection of motoring memorabilia and literature
built up over the last 25 years so if anyone is looking for something
specific I may be able to provide a photocopy.
Hope all members had a good Christmas.
Cheers for now
Ken Watts
Seasons greetings to all and I hope you had a happy Christmas.
There are now 13 in the group, not all of us are in Canberra, but the
interstaters are most welcome for the knowledge they bring and the
ability for us to maintain contact with Rootes owners around Australia.
At present I know a little about each of you (quite a bit about some)
but most of you know very little about the other members. So I'd
encourage you to each post a message saying who and where you are, what
your interest in the group is. If you're looking for a car or parts,
tell us all and if you have something to sell let us know.
You can post an e-mail message to RootesCanberra@yahoogroups.com or
just by replying to a message you have received from the group.
Just to get the ball rolling, I'm Vic from Canberra, currently have a
1963 Sunbeam Alpine - pics on the group site. Currently looking for a
straight, relatively rust free later model Minx, Hunter or Vogue to be
used as a daily driver. I also know of the whereabouts of a partly
rusted and slightly dinged Hunter that appears sound mechanically and
has a reasonable interior and is available cheaply.
Cheers, Vic
Just in time for Christmas, this early 1950s Minx has turned up in Geelong. It looks pretty good for a start of $500, there must be someone on the list who really needs it :-)
This is from the Humber list - I've no connection with the seller,
Cheers, Vic:
Description: I am in Sydney, Australia and have a 1964 Super Snipe
Series 4 for sale. I am unfortunately moving to a place with no
garage and have to
give up the car. It's registered and road-worthy and had a lot of
work done on it including:
Extensive rust removal and repair
New linings
New carpets
Seatbelts fitted
New king pins
New drive chain
New tyres
Extensive additional mechanical work
Still needs a little work on its electricals (fuel gauge not working
for example) but otherwise in excellent condition.
Looking for a fast sale so if anyone is interested (or knows any
Sydney-based Humber/Humber club folks who might be interested) I'd
appreciate it. Price is highly negotiable.
My mobile is 0411 866 112.

Hi again,
I have just uploaded another file to the group site. This one is list
of Rootes spare parts suppliers that I have used over the last few
years. Also in the same file is a list of interesting and useful
websites for various Rootes cars.
Let me know if you have any problems accessing these files
Cheers, Vic
Hi All,
I have uploaded a file with draft itinerary and registration details
for the National Humber Rally to be held at Easter 2006 in
Cootamundra. To view the file, log in to Yahho and go to our group
home page. Then click on 'Files' in the menu box on the left of
screen, then click on the appropriate file.

The owner of a Vogue currently advertised on eBay has contacted me and
asked me to point it out to group members. The car is located at
Teralba near Newcastle. It's an abandoned project, possibly most
useful as a parts car. To view the ad go to http://www.ebay.com.au/
and do a search on the item number 4598150544
Cheers, Vic
We are off to a quiet start which is pretty much what I expected. I
have placed Ads in the Club Notices section of Just Cars and Unique
Cars magazines, plus I've also placed an ad on eBay so we'll see what
transpires from that.
Some events happening in the new year include:
January 26 - NRMA Motorfest (Sydney)- for more details visit
http://www.mynrma.com.au/motorfest.asp
March 12 - "Wheels 2006" - Canberra - this is a majot car display day
for all clubs in the ACT, held (I think) at the lawns in front of Old
Parliament house
April 14-17 - 16th Humber National Rally (based at Cootamundra, about
2 hours drive from Canberra, could be a good outing for us locals).
April 17 to 23 - 8th National Hillman Rally - "Wings in Tasmania".
Ask if you would like contact or other details for these events.
Cheers, Vic
There is a Series III Minx (about 1960 model) for sale in Junee,
about 2.5 hours drive from Canberra. It looks and sounds like quite
a nice little car, straight, recently resprayed with (according to
seller) no rust. I saw the car on Carsales.com and contacted the
owner who sent me some more photos. I have created an album at the
group homepage and posted some of the photos. To view the photos, go
to the group homepage
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/RootesCanberra/ , click
on 'Photos' and then click on the album 'Minx4sale'
The seller also told me that it runs well, doesn't blow oil smoke or
overheat. It's has done 95000 miles and seller is asking $1600. I
was quite tempted myself, but decided I really want a later model
with bucket seats and floor shift.
To view the original ad go to:
http://www.carsales.com.au/ Select Private car sales and search
for 'Hillman' in 'NSW'
You can contact the seller from the details in the 'carsales.com' ad,
or contact me and I will give you her name and email address.
Cheers, Vic
Hi Brian,
I have a feeling that Carsales.com have mucked up the ad - as you say
the first part refers to a 59 Alpine Roadster, but later in the ad
they say its a 48/49 model Sunbeam Talbot Saloon. In fact, I think I
know how they mucked it up - there is also a 59 Alpine Roadster for
sale on Carsales.com.
Your comments are most welcome and I'm sure any prospective buyer
would find them helpful,
Cheers, Vic

I found the Sunbeam Talbot you regered to at CarSales.
The add is misleading, firstly if the photo is the correct one,
the car shown would possibly be about 1949/50 lowlight
"80" maybe a "90". It is certainly not 1959 and definitely
not an 'Alpine'.
It looks like a nice vehicle but the two tone paint was not
available at that time.
At one stage before taking on a Super Snipe, I had three
Sunbeam Talbots. 1948 "80" lowlight, 1950 "90" lowlight
and a 1952 "90" highlight.
They were very distinctive cars, a pleasure to drive and
most reliable.
From 1953/4 on to the end of theline the wheels had a
different treatment and there were I think three portholes
along the bonnet.
My comments are meant to be constructive.

Well done Vic,
This is a great idea. When I was looking for a car club to join here
in Canberra, the Humber club was still running I think. The club
didn't seem to be very large and not very active, so I discussed a club
for Rootes type cars with the Humber club contact who thought that that
might interest a few around town. The main problem, which you
mentioned, was the overheads with running a formal club.
I'm sure that this "club" will attract some from around these parts,
and maybe a few extras too.
I'll send you a list of a couple of Rootes car owners that I know of
around these parts which you could add to your list of invitees if they
aren't already on it.
Cheers
Andrew.
Hi Brian,
Welcome to the group, you're the first to join. I have approved your
membership so you should be OK to post messages from now on, however
just now there is only me to read them.
Are you still selling that lovely Super Snipe? I would love to buy it
but have no room and no money.
Could you do me a favour and reply to this? Just to make sure it's all
working? If your reply bounces, please email me direct on
v.hughes@...
Thanks and Cheers, Vic
