Michelle Obama jetted in to South Dakota Wednesday for a day trip to Mount Rushmore, taking in the sights before departing the same day for Las Vegas.
Michelle is traveling with her daughters on a “private family trip” to the West, the White House said.
According to the Rapid City Journal, Michelle landed Wednesday at Ellsworth Air Force Base and hopped in a ten car motorcade for the trip to Mount Rushmore. Advance work had already been done by the Secret Service and White House staff, who had arrived in town earlier in the week.
After viewing the memorial, the Obamas “showed a bit of a sweet tooth,” according to the paper, and stopped at the Turtle Town fudge shop where they had fudge and ice cream.
The visit caused access to parts of the memorial to be restricted and required visitors to go through a security checkpoint.
After today’s Las Vegas stop, Mrs. Obama is scheduled to be in San Francisco Friday for a fundraiser. She then moves on to Alameda, Calif., Saturday to commission a Coast Guard cutter and to Los Angeles the same day to participate in Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards.

The official Pentagon news release says he died "from injuries suffered in a noncombat related incident." But there is much more to the story. Weichel, 29, of Providence, died saving the life of a little girl.

According to the Rhode Island National Guard and the U.S. Army, Weichel was in a convoy a week ago with his unit in Laghman Province, in northeast Afghanistan. Some children were in the road in front of the convoy, and Weichel and other troops got out to move them out of the way.
Most of the children moved, but one little girl went back to pick up some brass shell casings in the road. Afghan civilians often recycle the casings, and the girl appeared to aim to do that. But a Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle was moving toward her, according to Lt. Col. Denis Riel of the Rhode Island National Guard.
MRAPs, as they are known, usually weigh more than 16 tons.
Weichel saw the massive truck bearing down on the girl and grabbed her out of the way. But in the process, the armored truck ran him over, Riel said.
The little girl is fine. Weichel died a short time later of his injuries.
"He was a big kid at heart. He always had a smile on his face, and he made everyone laugh," 1st Sgt. Nicky Peppe, who served with Weichel in Iraq, is quoted as saying in an Army story.
"But as much as Weichel was funny, he was also a professional. When it was time to go outside the wire for a combat patrol, he was all business."

The comedian Roseanne Barr last night tweeted the home address of George Zimmerman’s parents to her 110,000-plus Twitter followers, only to delete the posting after “not fully understanding that it was private not public.”
Barr’s posting of the correct Florida address of Robert and Gladys Zimmerman came at the same time Spike Lee was issuing an apology for erroneously disseminating a tweet that purportedly contained the home address of George Zimmerman, who last month killed teenager Trayvon Martin.
The residence cited by Lee is actually the home of an elderly couple with no connection to Zimmerman.
Barr, who deleted her tweet in the face of criticism from some Twitter followers, noted that she first thought it “was good to let ppl know that no one can hide anymore.” That stance quickly changed, with Barr reporting, “But vigilante-ism is what killed Trayvon. I don’t support that.”

They'll probably have to resort to holding shootings from helicopters, like they do for the feral hogs...hint--donkeys don't taste like chicken...

With pastures withered from a lingering drought, farmers in Texas and northwest Louisiana have abandoned donkeys by the hundreds, turning them into wandering refugees that have severely tested animal rescue groups.
The nation’s biggest donkey rescue group says that since March 2011, it has taken in nearly 800 donkeys abandoned in Texas, where ranchers mainly used the animals to guard their herds. Many of the cattle and goats have been sold off, largely because of the drought and the nation’s economic slump, putting the donkeys out of a job.
And although the drought that began in late 2010 is over now, the flood of donkeys continues, said Mark Meyers, executive director of Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue.
“Last week I spent two days on the road and got 20 donkeys each day,” he said Wednesday. Since then, he’s had a call of about 12 more in the Midlands, Texas, area.
“Hay prices still haven’t come down. And what little grass is growing, people are going to save it for the animals that are going to make them money,” he said.
In the north Louisiana town of Athens, Keith Gantt, who rounds up loose livestock for the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office, says he has dozens of donkeys that he can’t give away. Some he’s had for two years.
“People just turn ‘em out on the highway. The sheriff’s department makes me go catch them and then I get stuck with them,” he said.
The donkey market has shriveled with the dried-up fields of Texas, where auction houses won’t take them.

This is not a joke. An Austrian man really sawed off his own foot yesterday, according to Reuters, to avoid going back to work when a labor office official was set to check in on his health. Here are some more details:
Hours before an appointment on Monday for the labor office to check on his health, the 56-year-old man held his left leg against an electric saw in his home workshop and severed his foot just above the ankle, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.
Bleeding profusely, the man from the province of Styria then threw the foot into an oven, hobbled to his garage and called an ambulance. An emergency operation was unable to reattach the foot, ORF said.
According to Metro, the local police chief Franz Fasching said the man was still conscious when help arrived on the scene, although he had lost a lot of blood. Fasching said the foot was too badly burned from being in the oven to be salvageable.
ORF called it a desperate act of a man wishing to continue receiving unemployment benefits. The man will not be able to claim disability benefits after this gruesome act, the Minister for Social Affairs Rudolf Hundstorfer said, but should he file for mental disabilities that situation could change.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office is getting an "indefinite delivery" of an "indefinite quantity" of .40 caliber bullets from defense contractor ATK.
U.S. agents will receive a maximum of 450 million rounds over five years, according to a press release on the deal.
The high performance HST bullets are designed for law enforcement and ATK says they offer "optimum penetration for terminal performance."
This refers to the the bullet's hollow-point tip that passes through barriers without getting warped out of shape.
We've also learned that the Department has an open bid for a stockpile of rifle ammo. Listed on the federal business opportunities network, they're looking for up to 175 million rounds of .223 caliber ammo to be exact. The 223 is almost exactly the same round used by NATO forces, the 5.56 x 45mm.
The deadline for earlier this month was extended because the right contractor just hadn't come along.
Looks like the Department of Homeland Security means business.

Thank you everyone this hasn't been easy for sure. They say time heals but I think it is more you learn to live a new norm. I don't think I ever got over my dad just learned to live w/o him here physically. Carl died 9 yrs and 1 week after I lost my father. Not making March an easy month to deal with.

> Just occurred to me and maybe Helen or Iva mentioned it but Carl passed away after a 2nd round fight with cancer on Friday night.  He was just finally feeling better in October started getting back up on the horse against my wishes as he was still very weak.  By December he was proving he could do it for short periods and oh so happy.  In January did photos that I will forever more treasure.  Mid January at his checkup discovered he now had stage 4 liver cancer mets from his colon.  He had 2 choices start chemo and watch but chances are was not going to work and had maybe 3ish months or surgery and might have up to 2 years.  Well sounded like a no brainer to us.  We knew it was a fast growing large tumor there was only one.  There was nothing in October and in January it was a 3.3cm tumor on the scan.  By surgery date in Feb they ended up taking an 8cm tumor, 70% of his liver and his gallbladder.  Everything showed to be good on tests run from
> tissue surround the tumor to good blood flow thru the liver.  Yet his liver just never kicked back in to do its job and from there it was a steady downhill slide.  He spent 10days in icu, several more days/weeks on the floor.  March 16th the dr. suggested I come back to Colorado w/o the kids initially so I could focus on Carl and them.  So I left the kids in MT made the long drive back to CO.  Discovered just how serious things were.  I was told it was my prep call when they phoned.  But there was one more option they were hopeful and I was willing to do anything to give my husbands body that one more chance to fight.  So we started dialysis and over the course of the weekend had hoped to see improvement on his labs but we never did.  So at that point I decided to have him moved to comfort care on a quiet floor in the hospital.  I had the kids brought down, We got to renew our vows which was something we had planned later this year.  Not the
> same but was done and it had meant a lot to him so some friends and our officiant via phone made it happen.  Two of the kids decided they couldn't stay to watch and I respected that for them.  An hour after they left he slipped into a coma and 2 days later passed away.  Felt longer than that I had to look at dates and that is all it was.
>
> Sooo guess I am joining the widows or singles out there rving.  We never ended up moving into a place and now not sure I want to.  Considering after social security starts coming in to take some time off of work and hitching up the 5vr (which honestly scares me have never done it) and going away for awhile.  traveling, visiting family and friends from around the states, seeing places and doing things we had planned before he was ever dx in 2010.  I get his ashes back today and head back to Montana.  Can't wait to hug the other kids and the dogs esp his naughty puppy.  I figure she will be keeping me in line :)

> So I may be back more on the boards for advice and tips.  I know before I got a ton of help when we first started our journey but now it is on a different level than I have ever known and some things I am just unsure of.  I know much of the basic stuff.  I have helped with hitching up but never have I moved the truck with the rv following.  Won't be right away but I do think it will be later this year sometime.  I am still very much just checking boards when I get a chance.  Just don't have time for the abundance of emails esp more so right now.

A counterterrorism training document for Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about wiretapping read that “under some circumstances, the FBI has the ability to bend or suspend the law and impinge upon the freedom of others.” This document, revealed by Wired, has already been removed by the agency for being giving “imprecise” instruction.
Wired’s Danger Room reports that it had obtained a letter from Sen. Richard Durbin, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee overseeing the FBI, to FBI Director Robert Mueller referencing this questionable allowance, after the agency’s six-month internal review of counterterrorism training documents. When Wired asked to see the original document, the request was initially refused by the Bureau. Shortly thereafter it was handed over, but Wired notes the spokesperson “refused to say who prepared the document; how long it was in circulation; and how many FBI agents, analysts and officials received its instruction.”

A nightclub in Montgomery, Ala. is raising eyebrows by hosting a “Food Stamp Friday” party on April 6 that seems to glamorize life on the federal government’s food assistance program.
An invitation for the April 6 party obtained by The Daily Caller tells patrons of the Rose Supper Club in North Montgomery that the Friday night cover charge will be just $5 if a “food stamp card” is shown upon arrival.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was designed for Americans living at near-poverty levels.
According to the flashy, postcard-size flier advertising the party, there will be “free shots at the door.” The announcement’s artwork mimics an Electronic Benefit Transfer card, the debit card used by Americans to redeem their SNAP benefits.
Glamorizing federal assistance bothers some who have seen the posters.
“I just don’t understand how they are promoting this without anyone saying anything about it,” Stephanie Pope, a Montgomery resident who has seen the fliers in gas stations, told TheDC.
Orlando Rogers, an employee who answered the telephone at the Rose on Thursday, confirmed that the “Food Stamp Friday” party is taking place at the venue next month.

Senate Republican staffers continue to look though the 2010 Obamacare law to see what’s in it, and their latest discovery is a massive $17 trillion funding gap.
“The more we learn about the bill, the more we learn it is even more unaffordable than was suspected,” said Ala. Sen. Jeff Sessions, the Republican’s budget chief in the Senate.
“The bill has to be removed from the books because we don’t have the money,” he said.
The hidden shortfall between new Obamacare spending and new Obamacare taxes was revealed just after Supreme Court judges grilled the law’s supporters about its compliance with the constitution’s limits on government activity. If the judges don’t strike down the law, Obamacare will force taxpayers find another $17 trillion to pay for Obamacare’s spending.
The $17 trillion in extra promises was revealed by an analysis of the law’s long-term requirements. The additional obligations, when combined with existing Medicare and Medicaid funding shortfalls, leaves taxpayers on the hook for an extra $99 trillion over the next 75 years.
The federal government already owes $15 trillion in debt, including $5 trillion in funds borrowed during Obama’s term.
That $99 billion in unfunded future expenses is more more than five years of wealth generated by the United States, which now produces just over $15 trillion of value per year.

TheDC’s Michelle Fields reports on the completely apolitical, non-ideological ALF-CIO:
“AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker told The Daily Caller that it is ‘conservative, right-wing policies that are to blame’ for Trayvon Martin‘s death …’The same folks who want to kill workers rights in the work place are the same folks who want to kill voters votes … and now they are literally supporting legislation that is literally killing our children.’”
Sure glad no one is exploiting this tragedy to make a political point.

Mastercard confirmed Friday it is investigating a potential breach at a US-based credit card processor.
"As a result, we have alerted payment card issuers regarding certain MasterCard accounts that are potentially at risk," the firm said in a statement to NewsCore.
The statement did not reveal how many cards had been compromised.
The breach also affected Visa account customers, according to the Krebs on Security blog, which first reported the incident.
"Sources in the financial sector are calling the breach 'massive' and say it may involve more than 10 million compromised card numbers," Krebs wrote.

MasterCard confirmed today it is investigating a potential breach at a US-based credit card processor.
Visa has yet to respond to Krebs' request for comment.
Alerts were sent out to US banks late last week and the affected banks reportedly are analyzing data transactions in a bid to track a common point of purchase.
The breach was believed to have occurred between Jan. 21 and Feb. 25.
MasterCard said law enforcement was notified of the security compromise, adding, "The incident is currently the subject of an ongoing forensic review by an independent data security organization."
The company said its own systems have not been compromised in any manner.
In late 2008, a group of hackers breached the network of Princeton, N.J.-based payment processing giant Heartland Payment Systems, which processed transactions for restaurants, retailers and other merchants. Data from more than 100 million credit and debit cards were stolen.

Department of Homeland Security and ICE neither do anything about Homeland Security or Illegal Immigration in most cases and if they did it would not be of a scale that requires that much ammo. Notice that in the article it in no way indicated any was for the Defense Department. I have no problem with them getting the best stuff as I have a lot of confidence that THEY would not use it against the populace of the United States.

An internal state police memo obtained by a Connecticut news station reportedly challenges troopers to "outperform" their colleagues by issuing hundreds of tickets to drivers on Friday.
The memo, obtained by WTNH-TV, calls for state troopers in one barracks to "issue at least 60 infractions / Misdemeanors each shift for a total of 180 infractions in order to outperform both Troop F and Troop G.
"One day Troop F issued 301 tickets. Troop G responded by issuing 345 in one day. We can do better," Lt. Anthony Schirillo wrote in the memo, according to the station.
"I am asking that everyone, myself included, contribute to this effort," Schirillo said. "NOTE if we happen to issue 350 tickets in one day that would be stellar."
A second memo obtained by the station reportedly says that "The master sergeant and I will buy pizza for the shift with the highest total."
