2 batteries will start the bus. The eagle is a 12 volt bus and it
uses 3 batteries. I think 12 volt is better in a conversion and much
easier to jump off if the batteries are dead. I converted my Neoplan
Spaceliner to 12 volt by using a Eagle starter and an extra 12 volt
alternator. I kept the 24 volt original alternator just to supply
power for my 24 volt inverter. I think it was not just the good ride
that made the Eagle popular, but also that is was a 12 volt bus. Wulf

It is never good to by from a small company, where the owner himself
has to make good on a warranty. I used Illinois Battery for a while
and I have their batteries in my Dina right now. They are battery
manufacturers, but family owned. When I sold a lot a buses, I used to
buy a skid of 24 battery batteries at a time. They also supply
batteries for the Chicago CTA and Milwaukee Transit. For my last 10
batteries I paid $ 500.00 and I don't pay sales tax.
Because I buy a lot of batteries from them, they have never gave me a
warranty problem. For someone that buys only 4 batteries in 10 years
it maybe different. When it comes to taking back batteries I had the
best experience with COSCO. Just put them on their return-counter and
the sales lady ask you what's wrong with them and you tell her that
the batteries are no good and they will just give you new one or your
money back, no question asked. I used to buy the marine group 31
batteries from COSCO. Like I said, I am using starting batteries all
around now. Only problem you have to work out; there are only single
posts. Wulf

The sender was already in my 1989 RTS, but there was no gauge harness or gauge.
A GMC truck sender and gauge work perfect in an RTS and the way I cut a hole in
my floor to locate the sender was to use a plumb bob @ the window frame above
the tank and measure to the sender location. I cut the floor at an angle like
the top of a Jack-O-Lantern and the glued a strip of luan to two sides of the
cut to make up for the removal of the kerf.

Been doing some maintenance and repairs on the RTS. The biggest one was having
to pull the V730 transmission to find out why it was making a loud metal
knocking noise when in drive or reverse that was so bad it made the engine
vibrate like it had a miss. I took the bevel gears out and found that the nut
that held the driven bevel gear and bearing had backed off and made the gear and
spacer bang back and forth. I managed to clean the threads good enough to put a
new nut and tighten the assembly using a 36" pipe wrench. I indexed the nut as
required and wondered why the old nut had broken it's indexing and backed off?
A $140 fix that would of cost thou$ands in an Allison shop.

I replaced the controller on the Webasto oil-fired coolant heater that was a
$200 deal (used) on eBay, a new one is over $500.

Then I had a freak accident with my Trace inverter-- it was so dry last month in
Arizona I picked up static electricity walking through the bus and fried the
digital readout on the Trace. A bolt of electricity shot out from my finger to
behind the digital readout when I tried to push one of the control buttons.
That cost me $300 for a new control and guage. Lesson learned-- touch a ground
before trying to touch your inverter!

New oil and filters, and now I am ready for spring. Just need money for fuel.
$4.19 for diesel right now?

I was just thinking-- my RTS is usually in my 1820 sq ft rv garage, but whether
it is in or out I am using it every day even if it is only to grab a beer out of
the apartment refrigerator. My Trace SW2512MC inverter has been plugged in for
the last 10-12 years and keeps everything going. And when I get to take it out
for a trip the bus systems always work either driving or camping with very few
problems.

I really miss getting to use it. Its been two months since I got to take it
out....

Hi Geoff,
You are lucky. I had my bus out 2 times in 5 years. When my wife was
still alive we used to take a trip every weekend, if only 100 miles
up to Wisconsin. At least 2 major trips out west in the summer or
down south in the winter. I think I had more time, but it really is
the money. I love to do a little work on my bus most weekend, but I
am running out of things to change or add on. It's still a good place
to keep the beer...lol. Wulf

It's because the direct drive off the cam-gears in the back of the
engine. The alternator drive gear can come off and fall down into the
cam-gears. My Eagle was belt-drive, but in my RTS and Spaceliner I
had the alternator rebuild, because I did not want to chance it. It
comes out fairly easy in the RTS. I used a piece of plywood on top of
the engine to slide it out on. It's pretty heavy. After you get it
out, you can check the gear and rebuild it. I never rebuild any
myself, so I am no help on that. Wulf

got a older unit that i dont know much about nice onan 6500 just have to figure
out how to rebuild the pump and see if i can get it running. that made me think
of a question where do you get the mufflers for your gen to help make them run
quieter?

Do you have the PTO drive on the transmission? You are better off puting a 12v
and 24v alternator to run off that drive than rebuilding the 50DN, gear driven
alternator. And at this point you may consider a 12v inverter instead of a 24v.
You are going to need 12v to run all your RV stuff so a 12v house bank is easier
to set up.

Some will tell you otherwise, but it's a shame to give away 6,000
watt of power by going to a 12 volt alternator. If you get a 12 volt
150 amp alternator it will give you only 1,800 watts of power. In my
Spaceliner I changed everything over to 12 volt including the
starter, I used a 105 amp 12 volt alternator for the 12 volt battery
bank. But I kept my 24 volt alternator to power my 2 2.5 Kw
inverters. In my RTS I used 2 50 amp equalizers for the 12 volt side
and the same in my Dina. The Eagle uses a 12 volt belt-drive 300 amp
alternator. It take 3 belts to turn that monster, it cost about $
5,000.00 for a new one without a core, but still it is only 3.6 Kw.

I think I am off on the price for the 300 amp alternator. Maybe I am
thinking in 1992 money and it was only $ 500.00, not $ 5,000.00.
Anyhow the Eagle used a 400 amp Niehoff alternator and not a $ 300.00
amp unit. I was luck that mine worked okay. I remember checking into
replacing it and it was really big money. My Dina has good working
bus AC, but in my RTS I ran the front AC off my inverters. You will
need at least 1.8 Kw to run one AC. Wulf

A search through the archives on this subject will give Steve more information
on how to set up his elctrical system. But getting rid of the 50DN alternator
rather than spending a lot of money getting it rebuilt and spending a lot more
money on a 24v inverter and 12v equalizer is not a cheap way to go. Plus you
are going to have a get a generator for power when you are camped for very long,
so it can be used to run the roof airs while driving.

Hi Geoff,
Maybe I would have gone with a large 12 volt alternator too, but I
removed the power takeoff when we rebuild the transmission. I could
not find any other place for the alternator belt. On the T-drive
Spaceliner I used one of the front pulleys for just a single belt. By
the way, I still have all the repair books on the 700 series
transmissions. I don't think I will ever need them again. You are
welcome to have them for the shipping cost only. Wulf

I want to add one more thing about the cost of parts. I junked over
100 RTS and Flzible buses. We pulled all the good parts out of them,
including the alternator, voltage regulators, starters, radiator, and
steering boxes etc. Steering boxes because we converted some older
Eagle buses to power steering and most other stuff we sold as cores.
From the Flxibles we removed the Vanners too. All the parts that were
replace had dates on them and I kept the newest of them in stock.
Therefore I had maybe 20 Vanners and over a 100 D50's. I gave most of
it away. I wish I still had an extra Vanner, because one of mine in
the Dina burned up. That's the bad thing about the equalizers, if
they shorten out, they will fry the 12 volt side. Wulf

Thanks, Wulf for your free offer on the V730 manuals, I already have the service
manual. I could use a parts manual. You have always been generous to the board
and RTS bus owners.

Happy Easter,
I have the parts manual for the V730D,V731D,V731,V731RH,VR731 and
VR731RH.
I also have a complete wiring manual for 20 RTS models, From TH8201
to TH80604. I still have a RTS parts manual, but I like to keep it
for a while. I still have a lot of customers I have sold an RTS buses
to. I also have a service manual for all older GMC transit buses. Let
me know if you want me to pack it all up. Wulf

Maybe you'd know of a good place to get rid of all these RTS parts I have, I've
got a full pallet of brake shoes and the only thing they work on are RTS's I've
also got 3 rebuilt (by AC/Delco)50dn gear drive generators and 7 new stators
plus several boxes of generator rebuild kits and about a semi full of other
brand new RTS parts, I need to sell them as core since no one wants them!
If you know anyone that buy's 6v92 and v730/731 parts I'll sell them cheap ($475
for a rebuilt 50dn gear drive)

Were are you located again?

I wish I had more space or I'd take a bunch of it. But no time and no space.

My steering box leaks like crazy, do you have a rebuild kit or a good box?

I also have some serious clunking in the right front suspension. It's a 1985
IFS. Not sure what is up yet, maybe bushings?

I have a brand new set of king-pins, still in the box and both
tie-rods. All for the older IFS. I will sell them for 1/2 of new. I
also have a good steering box. We put most boxes in older Eagles, but
I kept 2 extra boxes for my own RTS. They had newer dates on them and
I had a chance to drive the bus before I took them out.

I'm in Albuquerque NM.
The clunking sound may be worn out radius rod bushings, the independent front
ends apparently had a lot of problems with "clunking" (that would explain why I
have so many) One of the other members here probably know more about it, but my
guess would be the bushings are bad and I'm sure they will be a PITA to remove
and replace so I'd first check for dry rot on the rubber part and while your
there you may want to put a jack under the frame just to relieve any pressure on
the radius rod and see if it rattles before you start pulling out the tool box.
don't forget to ALWAYS PUT JACK STANDS UNDER THE BUS BEFORE YOU GO UNDER IT; Or
let ALL OF THE AIR out of the suspension system.

I don't have a rebuild kit for the steering box, but you can check with Mohawk
Mfg. they will have a kit and the bushings too.

Geoff thanks for the help in installing the magnetic pickup sender and
tachometer. I installed it a month ago but just today I ran the engine to
calibrate against a hand held reflective tachometer. Every thing works fine.
Thanks again.

James--

That is great news, now you have a 100% accurate tachometer instead of a "maybe
accurate" alternator tach. I watch my tach more than I watch my speedometer--
it is nice to see what your engine is doing.

Hi Geoff,
I had no pyrometer in my RTS, but I had one in my Eagle. I drove my
Eagle mostly by my RPM gauge and pyrometer. My Eagle was a Texas bus
and geared really tall. Whenever I kept the bus under 1600 rpm I cold
see the heat go up on the pyrometer as soon there was a hill or into
the headwind. Wulf
