I may be wrong, but I always thought that collecting latex was done in a
very similar manner to collecting maple sap from which to make syrup. Doesn't
really hurt the trees; I believe that rubber trees are grown on plantations
and just harvested on a schedule, but, again, I may be wrong.

... Most natural rubber comes from plantations. The trees are not cut down to make rubber, they are tapped much like maple trees are tapped to make maple...
