Bill - you're correct. No advertising "makes" anyone buy something.
But desire it strongly? I think this is possible.
I've learned from my kids that many cannot distinguish between "want"
and "need" (as in I need an iPod vs I need to eat). I'm sure this
blurring of want vs need has something to do with the economic pickle
we find ourselves in. I may "need" a new MacBook Pro, until I realize
I have a perfectly serviceable G4 450. That's what advertising is all
about - making you *want* something. And if you can't distinguish
between want and need, well, so much the better from the advertiser's
point of view.
This has gotten way off topic. Here - I highly desire my Prius!
