Hi Dave,
Japanese owners are jealous of Thermos on US models.
I have heard you guys get 20-25MPG of first 5 minutes graph
from a cold start compare to less than 15MPG on Japanese model.
Anyway, are you familiar with the four stages of warm-up process?
They found that and the Stage-3 is the key everybody should
realize that...
Stage-1: up to 40C, ICE is always ON.
Stage-2: 40C to 70C, ICE will be OFF when you are not accelerating.
Stage-3(aka idling check mode): 70C and above, but you have not been
exceeding 60km/h, ICE won't be OFF. See below how to go to Stage-4.
Stage-4(final stage): 70C and above, and after Stage-3 barrier.
Now, you are in real hybrid mode, and enjoy coasting.
Stage-3 Barrier:
Probably, many of you have experienced unwilling ICE running when
you release the accelerator and could not get 99MPG display.
To go to the Stage-4, do one of followings;
A. Wait for 5 seconds at signal stop. ICE will be OFF.
B. Push START button to system OFF, wait for 3 seconds or more
then push START again.
So I have been happily cruising along all these months thinking I was doing a decent job of driving for high mpg, even if I wasn't getting overly carried away....
Hi Dave, thank you for the nice report. And to Wayne, thank you for your warm comment to myself and our Master EPV(his handle). He should be very proud of...
I sent Wayne a private email to help determine my specific drive route, but did want to share with the group that after trying to duplicate the same techniques...

I suppose this is the time to prod you with Florida inputs again ;-) I almost always get 40mpg during the initial 5min warmup now that "winter" is gone....
That's GREAT! I just love these kinds of "Tricks"... By power cycleing you are starting "Fresh" with a "Hot ICE"! And this does what? better balances the...
An observation and a question: Observation - your Insight trick, Ryan, sounds like the same effect I've been getting the last few days by shifting the Prius...
I have to wonder what the purpose of this 4 stage thing is (particularly stage 3)... why can't the Prius/HSD go directly to Stage 4 as soon as the engine is...
Hi Mirza, So, you know about the Stage-3 thing. We have not received any clear answer about it from Toyota. It looks Toyota engineer thinks they need to check...
Dave, Please note that driving in neutral is not recommended. The owner's manual in Towing section says... "Towing in this manner may be done only on...
Oops. Thanks for pointing that out, Ken. I now remember reading that in the manual many months ago, but had forgotten completely in my exhuberance at trying...
Hi Dave, Actually, I do not care how you drive. It's your car, not mine. :-) Anyway, regarding to your first question about going to Stage-4.... I think it is...
I don't know if the concern here is the same with the HSD as it is with conventional cars but...the lubrication of a transmission is done by a pump that's...

As the battery gets a higher SOC it will do this less. From what I've experienced, 6 bars is the ideal SOC to get ICE only acceleration. It may still charge...
I haven't seen that either. From the point that you see the green arrow to the battery, a tiny bit more foot pressure will give you ICE and MG to the wheels,...
Thanks for the kind words Bill! I am still learning. I am playing around with the B mode for 20-0 deceleration and also trying to optimize the use of EVb. I...
For about the last 4 months I have been focusing on the coast with no arrows to or from the battery. I had not thought much about acceleration w/o arrows...

I agree with Bill. I think David has misinterpreted the Master's instructions. The goal is NOT to use the ICE only. The goal is to use the ICE and MG at the...
