According to the Toyota rep at a Prius info workshop last year, Toyota has a long term contract with their battery supplier. Toyota will not change the Prius...

... Toyota does, and always has, made its own NiMH HV batteries. Panasonic EV was set up for the purpose (when the RAV4 EV was developed) as a joint venture...
