For those who embrace the notion that Prius' NiMH batteries are
nominally allowed to utilize the range of 40 to 80% state of charge,
I have prepared a small image of what the different battery bars
represent. It is posted in this group's photo section.
It is based on careful studies by Wayne Brown, Richard Scheffeneger,
and others, including Toyota themselves (though the latter do not
reveal much). As the actual transition values vary depending on
whether the battery is being charged or discharged, please do not
assume that the stated vales are the only possible ones.
As I understand it, the battery management in the NHW20 allows more
excursions from the preferred central value of about 60% SOC, than in
the NHW11. But no number of battery bars should be construed as
inappropriate operation, unless there is some other indication of a
fault condition. In other words, just drive it.
But carefully! Prius' median age is not yet up to snuff, and I'd
like to see that happen.
