I'm a new member of NYTRO, so if you don't mind I would like to throw my
perspective in the mix. NYTRO and the http://www.nysorva.org/ member clubs are
trying their best to get riding land opened up in New York state. You may have
noticed the lack of official trails and legal riding areas. This is mostly
because the ATV law was changed from Open unless posted to Closed unless posted
on public land, and a bad taste left in peoples mouths by loud exhausts and poor
behavior.

"You may not operate an ATV on public land unless it is specifically designated
for ATV use, and it is allowed by a posted sign." - I'll come back to this in a
second.

The club has access some privately owned land, that can be ridden on, usually
for a small fee. These trails are scattered about, Lake Demmon is an example.
The rest of the trails are either Public / permitted by the local government -
some of Tug Hill, or a non posted but town approved ATV trail - West shore line
trail in Byron / Bergen. The problem with the Bergen trail is that it is not
posted OK for ATV use (no signs saying ATV's permitted that I could see).
Although the police and locals seem ok with the ATV's, and if you look online
the counsel voted it "ok for ATV use", my understanding is that without a posted
sign, it's not totally legit. I will ride there again, but figured there might
be others who want a 100% legit experience. If you google West Shore Line, you
should be able to find the trail and decide it's boundaries / legitimacy for
yourself.

If you join NYTRO I can't say that legal riding trails all over New York will
suddenly appear for you. Legal, free trails are almost non existent. I can say
that you will be supporting the effort to open up more land. You will be invited
on many rides, I've been on two of the three that I was invited too... since
July 4th. You may have to drive for some of the rides, but the camaraderie and
the trail makes it all worth while. A club with a trail is awesome, but if they
aren't working to change the law, and public opinion, their trail can disappear
overnight. I know of too many people who cannot ride on property they own, and
have been using for 20-30 years, because of a neighbor moving in, and deciding
they didn't like people riding near them.

This is why I joined, and what I've taken from NYTRO. Hope it helps you decide
if the club would be a good fit for you.

Thanks much Pam.  I am told that there are some trails in Bergen NY and am trying to track them down.  Also I heard that Orleans County just started a ATV club and I am trying to track that down.  Thanks again.  Ray

Hi Ray,

One of the NYTRO trails that is available to you to ride is located near Bath, NY...looks to be about an hour and 45 minutes from your location. There is camping at Lake Demmon Recreation and 20 miles of trails: 16 miles of green (or easy) trails and 4 miles of blue and red (intermediate and expert only) trails. You can fish at the lake or just go boating, too.

The website address for more information: www.demonrunatvtrails.com.

The Western Chapter also has trails in Cuba, NY...looks like about two hours and 15 minutes from you. You'll have to ask them for directions, though! I haven't been there yet.

Lots of mud, some really fast sections, lots of elevation changes. Sunday I
stopped while exploring a "new to me" trail. Just sat and soaked in the woods
for a little bit. 5 deer passed within a couple of hundred feet of me, weaving
in and out of the woods. Good times.

Hello Ron,  Legally you can ride on your aunts property as long as she gives you permission, you still must be registered and insured.  As far as any of the trails in boston none of them are legal, you would be riding at your own risk, the police do some times patrol but usually only respond if a land owner complains.  There are no close trails, the closest are Cuba wich is a NYTRO club trail (about 1.5 hours from Hamburg), and we are working on opening club trails in Cherry Creek wich is about a hour from Hamburg.  Are you any relation to Mike Sparcino?  He is one of our members.

Riding areas are tough to come by and most people have a little slice of
heaven that
they call a home trail. New York State is a tough state to ride (or drive)
anything off road.
There is a significant lack of State and Federal riding areas (Michigan has a
nearly state
wide trail system, and PA is almost as good).
Back in the 80's and early 90's when I was riding off road I had friends
with access to
and permission to use a cow pasture with some woods. Unfortunately we told
friends, who
told friends, who (you get the idea) and the only way the farmer could control
the situation
was to ban everyone from riding on the property.
There also used to be trails that went all over the place. "Abandoned" sand
pits
abounded. Not so much any more. Land is being sold and used. People who once
turned a
blind eye to trespassing now want their boundaries strictly enforced. I can't
say I blame
them, I've had to deal with hunters on my property, and most of them are ok, but
the guy
that threatens to punch you out for kicking him off of your property... where he
was
trespassing... kinda ruins it for others.
There are a few pay to ride areas around, Copper Creek, Whispering Pines,
Demmon
Lake, Allegheny Forest in PA, Etc. Etc. Etc. They are a good place to start
looking when you
want to go riding. You can ask around locally and see if anyone knows of good
riding
areas. Be careful as many riding areas are "borrowed" from the actual land
owner, mostly
without permission. You are best off approaching the owner of the property and
asking.
You can also do what I did and buy some land. It's a small parcel but it does
alright by me.
I guess the point is, that if you come in here (or any off road board I've
seen) and ask
where to ride, You will get a standard join the group so we can get to know you,
and here
is a list of pay to ride places. Most people won't give up the location and
permission to use
their little slice of heaven to just anyone who asks. This goes for ATV's, Big
off road trucks,
Even nitro RC car racing.
Thanks for listening
Rusty
