Ford says the 2007 Shelby Cobra GT500 Mustang will be the most powerful factory-built Mustang in history, more powerful than the 1969 Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet or even the legendary 1969 Boss 429. Think about that for a second. Let it sink in. Mustang worshipers may take a knee if you have to, but the reality is this: When this car hits the streets during the summer of 2006, it'll have 470-plus horsepower, making it the most powerful Mustang ever built.
The new Shelby Cobra GT500 next to a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 KR, or King of the Road model powered by a 428-cubic-inch V8 rated at 335 hp. The 500 hp new version has the striping (nose to rear air-dam) and lowered stance giving it the classic menacing look.
Shelby Approves and Ford Builds the ultimate Mustang. Ford is calling the car a unique collaboration between the legend Carroll Shelby and the Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT). "I've worked with the SVT guys for several years now," says Shelby. "And I know they have the guts, the talent and the passion to deliver the best performance Mustangs ever." Shelby, who built the legendary Shelby Mustangs and Shelby Cobras in the 1960s, served as a senior advisor to the "Dream Team" that was assembled inside the Ford Motor Company to develop and build the 2005 Ford GT supercar. But this one is truly a Musclecar legend reborn....

Hello fellow muscle fans,
I've been out of the musclecar/classics arena for a couple of decades
but now I'm back (with a '66 lemans). I currently live and work in
seattle washington. I just bought my lemans from california with the
intention of registering in washington state (possibly moving back to
california in a couple of years). I've heard of the "clunker law" in
passing but didn't pay much attention since it didn't directly affect
me. I came across an article recently that was from a few years ago.
Is this garbage still in the works? I don't anticipate a problem with
registering my california car in washington, but has anyone had any
problem with registering an "out of state" car in california or had
any trouble with the "clunker" nonesense? I want to be prepared on the
car situation, if/when I move back to california, and if it currently
is an issue, maybe I'll keep the cal. registration current until I go
back to cal. even though I'm in washington now...
Thanks for any info,
GB
Perhaps the most common question people have is what exactly is a muscle car. The term wasn't even used until the late 1970s, in the 1960s there were often called "Super Cars" if called anything at all. Therefore, the actual definition of a muscle car, or which models were muscle cars, is a topic that is often disputed. Here is the general interpretation of what is a muscle car and what cars qualify, and which don't.

Intermediate Muscle Car
The first true muscle car
Strict Definition of a Muscle Car: A muscle car, by the strictest definition, is an intermediate sized, performance oriented model, powered by a large V8 engine, at an affordable price. Most of these models were based on "regular" production vehicles. These vehicles are generally not considered muscle cars, even when equipped with large V8s. If there was a high performance version available, it gets the credit, and not the vehicle that it was based on. Examples: Buick GS, Chevrolete Chevelle SS, Dodge Charger R/T, Ford Torino/Cobra, Plymouth GTX, Plymouth Road Runner, Oldsmobile 442, Pontiac GTO
Fullsize Muscle Car: The strict definition only includes intermediate size vehicles. In reality, performance oriented intermediate size vehicles didn't appear until 1964. Before then, manufacturers took existing fullsize vehicles and added extra performance to them. Because of this, the early fullsize performance vehicles are generally considered muscle cars. Examples: Chevrolet Impala (SS only), Ford Galaxie (with 390 + cid engines only), Dodge Coronet (R/Ts only), etc.
Pony Cars and Compact Cars:In addition to fullsize and intermediate muscle cars, a number of smaller vehicles started appearing on the automotive performance scene. These new "pony cars" and compact cars are generally considered muscle cars only if they have the top of the line performance engines and options.... Examples: Chevrolet Camaro (SS and Z28 models only), Ford Mustang (GTs and Boss only), Plymouth 'Cudas (no Barracudas), AMC Javelin, etc.

Pontiac musclecar legion began with the 421 Bonnieville and Catalina 2+2 and took off with the introduction of the 1964 GTO, which was an affortable high performance automobile. The TransAms, based upon the Firebird model are very sought after by visitors to Classic Muscle Cars
.
"A muscle car, by the strictest definition, is an intermediate sized, performance oriented model, powered by a large V8 engine, at an affordable price. Most models were based on "regular" production vehicles with a special options package factory installed."
As the cheapest and lightest of Pontiac's fullsize coupes and convertibles, the Catalina was the car of choice for fullsize performance enthusiasts from 1961 to 67. With light-weight body panels to Super Duty engines and other modifications, the Pontiac Catalina would firmly establish Pontiac's performance image. Catalina's featured the 389 V8 caming in several forms. With a single four barrel, it was rated at up to 333 bhp and with three two barrel cars (Tri Power), it was rated at 348 bhp. There were even special "Super Duty" versions which increased its power to 363 bhp.
Pontiac fullsize performance reached its peak in 1963. All fullsize models got new sheetmetal for 1963, including stacked headlights. Performance enthusiasts once again turned to the Catalina, the lightest of the Pontiac fullsize coupes. The standard engine was a 389 cid V8 with 283 bhp. Next up were two 421s with 10.75:1 compression ratios: a four barrel with 353 bhp and the Trophy 421 HO (High Output) which sported triple Rochester two-barrel carburetors operated by a progressive throttle linkage and was rated at 370 bhp. For serious drag strip use, buyers could specify the Super Duty 421 which came in three states of tune which all benefited from an increase in the compression ratio from 11.0:1 to 12.0:1 and an increase in the maximum shift point from 5900 rpm to a screaming 6400 rpm. Face it folks ET times ruled the showrooms during the Musclecar era and the early Pontiacs had impressive numbers.
The Pontiac Tempest GTO is considered by many the first true muscle car. Whereas other manufacturers were concentrating on their fullsize lines, Pontiac saw the potential for dropping a big block engine into an intermediate frame and marketing it at a budget price. Pontiac sneaked past the GM restriction on this combination by making the GTO an option on the Tempest model, creating the hottest performance machine yet. The GTO sold in great numbers and would fuel the competition between GM, Ford, and Chrysler that would keep the muscle car industry thriving for years to come till the GTO fadded out in 1974 after 10 years at the top.

The Chevrolet Corvette was first manufacturer in 1953 as a unique
American entry into the sports car market dominated by European makes
for years. Although not a muscle car by definition, the Corvette used
muscle car powertrains and has represented the American performance
car industry for fifty years. The first Corvette rolled off a
makeshift assembly line in Flint Michigan on June 30, 1953, a mere
six months after the debut of the concept car at the GM Motorama.
From the beginning, the Corvette was unique. It was only available as
a two passenger convertible in Polo White with a red interior. All
Corvettes were built by hand and its attractive and original body was
constructed out of fiberglass, not steel. Its chassis, with a 102
inch wheelbase, was basically a shortened Chevy passenger car unit.
The only engine available was named the Blue Flame Special and was an
upgraded version of the 235 cid six found in other Chevy cars. It
produced 150 bhp due to the use of a higher lift cam which provided a
significant boost in torque in the mid-range of engine speed.
Production and sales fell to just 700 units in 1955, leading to a
push within GM to kill the Corvette. However, Zora Arkus-Duntov, an
engineer on the Corvette team since 1953 and a former European road
racer, was determined to save the Corvette and make it a contender.
He started by giving the Corvette the two things it needed the most,
more power and better handling if it was to excell over the new T-
bird. By mid-1955, more power was added with the addition of a 265
cid V8 rated at 195 bhp as well as the option of a 3-speed manual
transmission. Meanwhile, Duntov drove a prototype V8 powered Corvette
to a new record in the Daytona "Measured Mile" at just over 150 mph
which gained some much needed recognition for the Corvette. The
Corvette was officially saved and Duntov would be remember as
the "grandfather of the Corvette" for his efforts.
