Sounds like a great plan, Adam.  I was a bit concerned about the walk to lunch this year, due to the  weather.  See you Saturday!

So, anyone planning on scootering to the Motorcycle show?  Brrrr!  Saturday sure looks like it is going to be a chilly one.  About the time we go out to lunch we should be approaching the daytime high temperature of two below zero!

After careful review of nearby restaurants, I think we should plan on hitting "Taxxi: An American Bistro" in the Hyatt Regency hotel.  While not cheap, they aren't too expensive, they can handle a large party, and most importantly we can walk to them through the sky-way. (Momma didn't raise no dummies!)  We had lunch there a couple years back during the show and while their service was a little slower than some places, the food was excellent quality and they had plenty of space.  Taxxi's is also the closest place via the skyway, a BIG plus after walking the motorcycle show for three or four hours.

Anyway, that's the plan.  Hope to see many of my old and new Minn-Max friends on Saturday.

That is a different take on the question than I understood, sorry about that.

Hmmm... I don't know of any place myself.  If anyone has a suggested for Jaz, speak up.  If I remember correct Jaz is down LaCrosse way, so places in that direction would probably be the most helpful to him.

Hey Gang,

Was nice seeing some of you at the show today. Sorry I missed running
into you Adam and your lovely wife, also you to Tom who I heard was
there.

I was up there with a friend of mine who has a bad back and can't do
too much walking, so after 2 1/2 hours of nothing but walking we opted
out of going to lunch with you all and headed for home about 12:30.
He was really hurting by that time. Would loved to have had lunch
with you all and talk about the coming season of riding, but I hope
you will understand why I couldn't.

Hope you all had a good time and good food. See you all soon.

Jim,

The scooters were great to look at.  More importantly,
the American Bistro, where we went for lunch, had the
largest pickles I have ever seen.  I am talking 7" long
pickle halves that you would have loved.

Phyllis and I had a great time seeing many of our riding friends at the Motorcycle Show on Saturday.  We encountered quite a few Minn-Max'rs and a number of other scooter and motorcycle riders we know.  In the end eleven of us enjoyed lunch and conversation at Taxxi in the Hyatt.

Included in that eleven from way up norte was Kevin "IronRanger" Hendrickson.  I must say that I was disappointed before that I wasn't going to be able to make the rally he's organizing.  Now having had the chance to chat face-to-face, I'm genuinely saddened that I'll be missing out on what should be a great time.  Let me again encourage those Minn-Max'rs that can to consider making the not too distant trek to Virginia, Minnesota in early June.  (Link to info below.)

As for the show itself, as Gary Charpentier mentioned the blog he writes does point out much of the scooter related aspects in his first installment of the event.  And while Gary and I might differ in personal taste here and there he does a nice job at covering many of scootery highlights.  (Link to blog below.)

The show this year was much more about catching up with friends for me and seeing what maxiscooter Phyllis might step up to, then actually looking at the machines and accessories.  Don't get me wrong, I did my share of that too, but with the plethora of dealers and demo days I visited last year, there was little that was "new" to get excited about for me.

There were a few scooters that did get some attention.  One was the Piaggio MP3 for the oddity appeal of the two-wheel front, one-wheel back lean-able contraption.  Another was the Vespa GT60 for its modern evocation of vintage 1940-1950 style scooters.  Also as anticipated, I was a bit smitten with the Kymco People S 200, an upright sitting, modern general purpose scoot.  Interestingly to me was how much more comfortable I found the riding position on the People S 200 compared to the very similar People S 250.  For my stature, it just fit better.

While I myself have no immediate plans for replacing my Bajaj Chetak 150, I must say there would be two contenders for that honor.  The aforementioned Kymco People S 200 and the amazing Vespa GTS250ie.  Both would give me the extra umph needed to ride them on roads with speed limits higher than 50 mph, which is the top end for the Chetak carrying my bulk.  The Kymco of course would be the more cost effective choice at nearly half the price of the Vespa.  Ah... but there is just something about a Vespa.

My trusty 2003 Suzuki Burgman 650 has no worries of being replaced this year.  Oh, I do have my eye on the 2007 magnificently colored red Burgman 650 Executive, but this year if any scooter is purchased it will be to get something for Phyllis more powerful than her stalwart, but lightweight 2001 Honda Reflex.

On that topic, the Honda Silver Wing 600 and Suzuki Burgman 400 seem to be the front runners for Phyllis next maxiscooter.  She hopes for the opportunity for a demo day to try each of them out, but found both comfortable, well balanced at a stand still, and can easily flat-foot either.  The Yamaha Majesty 400, while a fine machine, was just a bit too tall in the saddle for Phyllis to take off the center stand without a lot of effort and we pretty much eliminated the Suzuki Burgman 650 last year due to its overall challenge in moving it by foot power.  Heck, I sometimes find it a bear to push in the garage myself.

Okay, I've rambled on enough for now.  Watch for details hopefully later this week on the Minn-Max planning meeting.  For now keep the early afternoon of Sunday, March 11th open, as that is the most likely date for the event.

Be well, stay warm, and keep on scoot'n!

Hi all
I looked outside this morning and the sun was shining.Went in to my
garage and the Burgman 400 started right up.I let it warm up a few
minutes and pulled out of the garage. It was hard to believe how good
the warm sun felt and I just had light jeans on and a short sleeve
shirt. As I tooled down from my street and turned the corner I saw
several motorcycles and scooters. They all waved and were smiling, some
had long sleeves, some had summer shorts on.At the next stop
light,waiting for the light to change I heard a beep,beep.As I looked
in my rear view mirrorI saw Bill Gentry on his brand new 2007 grey
Burgman 400 right behind me.He kept beeping his horn and then it hit
me.it was my alarm clock going off. What a swell dream I had.The only
part that was true was Bill Gentry's new 2007 Burgman.
Sorry Bill I had to tell someone LOL.

I bought my 650 last fall, like it but find that the seat is too high
and too hard. Also I need some back support. I've read about a
couple of seat modifiers. Does anyone have personal recommendations
for someone who can make a lower, softer seat with back support?

Fellow Scooters,

I am out snowblowing the drive during our last snow and
cold snap.  Even wearing a new pair of snowmobile type
gloves my fingers get extremely cold.  Wearing my old
lined leather mittens, my hands stay warm.

I am wondering if winter weight mittens might not be better
for riding in the Spring cold.  Obviously hand warmers and
covered hand shields are also good suggestions.  I have
neither, and may think of using mittens.  The fingers keep
each other warm and cold air is not allowed to flow between
them.

Provided that you feel you still maintain enough dexterity for the controls and such, go for it.  I personally don’t feel that I do, so I wouldn’t be inclined to wear mittens.  I don’t really know why I feel this way – none of the controls are operated by any of the non-thumb fingers – but I do.

The fingers keep

each other warm and cold air is not allowed to flow between

them.

Hi Bill:

I see you are just east of Peoria.  I would imagine your route will follow the Mississippi River so you won't be coming this far west close to the Des Moines, IA area.  I have plans to go, have made motel reservations and will probably try to caravan along with some of the Minn-Max group hopefully.   Russ

I'd like to get a head count of those who are thinking of joining the
El Paso Posse anywhere along the route from El Paso, Illinois, to
Mountain Iron, Minnesota. Please either PM or email your name, screen
name, and location. Even if you are not 100% sure that you are going,
just a preliminary headcount. This is to help with the planning of
where and when the posse stops should happen along the way... Thanks! I
will not give your information to anyone...

I feel the same. Occasionally, prior to my pickup warming up, I will wear mittens. But even there I feel a little uncomfortable, preferring gloves.  But Bob's idea is worth following up, especially with disposable heat packs inside.  Ray    :)

-Hi All
I have used my sons snow mobile gloves in the past for real cold
riding. When I went to price them the price was out of site.So I went
to Fleet Farm and in the boys and mens department they had some
really warm type gloves that are water proofed etc.I think they are
as warm as the expensive snow mobile gloves that they sell at Fleet
Farm but only cost $10.00.I wore them when it was 36 degrees and my
hands stayed nice and warm when riding the scooter.

Jim,

Excellent input, I really like the idea of rainproof.

Thanks Bob

Interesting. For a vehicle as motorcycle-like as this, I think I'd
be put off by the non-leaning stance in corners. The Piaggio MP3
http://www.mp3.piaggio.com/index_eng.html has more appeal to me from
that standpoint.

The T-Rex http://www.mp3.piaggio.com/index_eng.html looks more
interesting to me than the Spyder, although the T-Rex is way more
money than I would consider spending.

I did sign up to be notified of when and where I could try the
Spyder.

Hot tip for you...
In years past I was involved in a long distance relationship, weather was great at
both ends, I checked, but in the MIDDLE of the trip I went through a blizzard... it was
a very long trip and my fingers began to really hurt!  Finely I had an idea, every once
in a while I would pull off the road and warm my gloves over the hot air coming out the
tail pipe!  Man did the hot gloves feel good on that cold ride!!!!!!
