My wife wanted to sell her 1996 car last month. As best she could
tell from answering the questions on its condition at one of the
online used-car sites, the "private sale" price was about $1000. She
listed it on craigslist and very promptly got two replies, one of
which resulted in a sale for $800. (The other said he was willing to
pay $1000 but didn't show and rescheduled and didn't show again...)
A few years ago I sold another old car at a $1,000 buy-it-now price
via eBay Motors. The listing of course disappears when someone agrees
to buy it at that price. The listing disappeared so quickly that I
honestly thought I'd done something wrong and it hadn't gotten
listed, but in reality it had sold within hours. However, even though
I said firmly in the listing that the buyer must come to my house to
pick up the car, the buyer called and asked which local airport would
be better for me pick him up at! I went through the sale anyway.
So both of these channels are very effective ways to sell old, cheap
cars. I don't know how well they'd work with a 2005 Prius.

When I bought my 2006 Prius, I sold my '99 Cutlass on www.cars.com.
I got less than I asked, but about 30% more than the dealer offered.
Overall, it was a very positive experience.
I've also heard good things about www.craigslist.org.
Good luck,

You might want to join the Prius-2G Yahoo group and read up on people's
"pleasure" with the built-in NAV (navigation system). There are lots of
recommendations there to buy a hand-held that you can move from car to car
(that is, dissatisfaction with the in-dash unit). To get the NAV in a Prius,
the cost jumps to $26,415 (according to Build Your Own for my ZIP code at
toyota.com).
The Civic Hybrid also has a package available with an in-dash NAV; $24,350.
The colors are no better; silver, white, icy blue, and two shades of grey,
but it's $2,100 less than the Prius with the built-in NAV, if you're sold on
having one.

As some mentioned the hybrid drive on my wife's Civic (2005) may have
changed so it does actually turn the engine off in stop and go traffic.
Back to the Prius - I have to say, cool as that dashboard screen may be it

certain it is great if you've got the gps package but for me it has been a
real bummer.

Both are great cars. Nothing wrong with either choice. Take both for
a test drive, and see which one fits you better.
Other than size (Civic is a compact, Prius is a larger midsize) and
styling, be aware that both hybrid choices are different. Honda's IMA
is primarily a gasoline engine with electric assist (the newer HCH II
has little electric-only propulsion), while Toyota's HSD is a full
hybrid design that can be gasoline, electric, or a combination of the
two. Some people like the simplicity of one hybrid design over
another, but that's a personal choice. Same goes for the
instrumentation gages in the HCH vs. the touchscreen in the Prius.
Pricing wise, I'd say go with the Prius.
Toyota Prius, starting at $21,100: http://www.toyota.com/prius-hybrid/
Honda Civic Hybrid, starting at $22,600:
http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-hybrid/
(even the US federal income tax credit for this Honda doesn't make up
the initial price difference...)
Hybrids do cost less in the long term than their conventional
counterparts. (Intellichoice used a 5 year ownership comparison in
2006) See http://www.intellichoice.com/press/Hybrid-Survey-2006 and
http://www.intellichoice.com/carBuying101/HypeOverHybrids
While Consumer Reports in 2006 only found the Toyota Prius and the
Honda Civic Hybrid would pay off within the same 5 year frame. The
Honda Accord Hybrid, the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Lexus RX400h, and
the Toyota Highlander Hybrid were also studied.
(I'll note that there was a mathematical error in the initial
publication of Consumer Reports' hybrid vehicle cost analysis, which
a retraction was published later...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11637968/ )
Since this publication, many more hybrid models have become
available, so I can't use this to say about hybrids "in general."
However, in the US, the Toyota hybrids have sold so many that they no
longer qualify for the US Federal hybrid vehicle income tax credit,
but Honda and others still have theirs.
Check out the April issue of Consumer Reports if you want reliability
information. Both the Honda Civic and Toyota Prius make their best
bets for new cars and for used cars.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/top-picks-for-2007-4-
07/overview/0704_top-picks-2007.htm
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/used-cars/used-cars-best-and-
worst-406/index.htm
In the US, hybrid models (like the Prius and HCH II) tend to be the
best in fuel economy in their respective classes, using the same
testing procedure to compare all cars (hybrid/gasoline/diesel/flex-
fuel/etc.), and that is for BOTH highway and city driving:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/best/bestworstNF.shtml
The Prius and Honda Civic are also in Kelley Blue Book's 2007 Best
Resale Value Awards:
http://www.kbb.com/kbb/ReviewsAndRatings/BestResaleValueAwards.aspx
(Though the Prius was dropped in the 2008 list...)
The Prius is also in edmunds' used cars best bets list as well, and
their lowest true cost to own list (2007 and 2008).
http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/bestbet/articles/index.htmlhttp://www.edmunds.com/reviews/tco/2007/index.htmlhttp://www.edmunds.com/reviews/tco/2008/index.html
Both the Prius and HCH are great cars. But, only you can decide which
will work out best for you. Take both for a test drive, and see which
one you like better, which you like the seating better, and/or like
the available options better... Do you prefer a sedan (Honda Civic
Hybrid), or do you like a hatchback (Toyota Prius)? Is a compact OK
with you (Honda Civic Hybrid), or would you prefer a larger midsized
vehicle (Toyota Prius)? If you want a manual transmission, then
you'll have to look for a used HCH. Do you want to show off that you
have a hybrid or not? The Prius is only available as a hybrid and its
distinctive aerodynamic design gives it away, while the HCH blends in
and looks like most every other Civic on the road...
some other discussion groups for owners of each model:
Honda Civic Hybrid:
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/honda-hybrid/http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Honda_Civic_Hybrid/http://www.insightcentral.net/forum/http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f12/

Meanwhile, I wouldn't rule out looking at the Nissan Altima Hybrid or
the Ford Escape Hybrid, depending on whether you need the FEH's
utility or just like the Nissan better...
<<<It depends what you're looking for, how often you're highway vs. city

They fixed that in the 2006 and later Civic Hybrid, if I'm not mistaken...
didn't they? I'm pretty sure I noticed that on my test drive of the HCH-II
when I bought my Insight.

The Civic Hybrid is nothing to sneeze at -- it does pretty well too. Some
guys just did an across-the-country over Valentine's week, and got between
50 and 60 in the dead of winter, below freezing and through snowstorms...
You can see the data charts here:

an HCH-I MT and an HCH-II CVT).
See real-world totals from lots of drivers at cleanmpg.com/compare
The most honest answer is "it depends."
It depends what you're looking for, how often you're highway vs. city
driving, etc. I have a Prius and my wife drives a Civic hybrid.
Civic will generally do better on the highway, rides lower to the ground,
and (as far as I'm concerned) has a more realistic dashboard layout.
I carry a lot of gear including occasionally lumber. Prius back seats fold
down, the Civic back seats do not. Prius shuts engine off in city traffic,
Civic only does that once (need to move 10 mph before it'll shut off). Prius
dashboard is annoyingly stupid design where one must deal with the
touchscreen to do the simplest of things like... change the speed on the
heater/ac fan. Want to move the fader on the stereo? It will require 20
seconds and several screens worth of attention (rather than watching the
road) to do so.
Good luck.

Then there is no question you want a Prius.
It excels in long mileage commutes.
