It's the VW Golf Mk1, right? A bit old but if it runs it should be OK. A
bit sad to wreck a car that is somewhat of a classic, but...

The engine would have to be turned to an inline position and you would
need a different gearbox. Consider engine mounts and things like oil
filter and other things that might get in the way. Racetech (
http://www.racetech.ee ) built some diesel powered Locosts.

Some might argue that they don't liek diesel engines, but that's not
really a technical issue and the low RPM torque of a diesel can be handy.
