Thanks. In 1973 No. America Spit got the 1500 Toledo engine. The American model
was fitted with a single Zenith-Stromberg carburettor and had a compression
ratio reduced to 7.5:1. The engine only delivered 53 bhp.
Moss sells Spitfire parts for the '71-74 1300 gearbox and the '75-80 1500
gearbox. I've seen these called the three rail and single rail gearboxes. It
appears the 1300 box originated with the TR Toledo in 1970 and then replaced the
Spit's Herald derived box in '71. They both got the single rail (1500) box in
'75. Then the Toledo became the Dolomite 1300 and 1500. As the Austin Marina (NA
designation) used the Dolomite 1500 drivetain and gearbox, I guess it was the
same as the '75 Spit's. The bell must ave been different as the Marina used the
"B" 1800cc engine as was fitted to the MGB.
The Dolomite 1850 and Sprint used the Triumph slant four developed for the SAAB
99. I am told, but haven't verified that the TR7 which used this engine was
equipped with the same gearbox as used in the the TR4-6 (a friend claimed to
have fitted one in his TR3). This box has a fixed bell. The Toledo and Dolomite
were never imported into the US, but the TR7 was. Possibly the TR7 rear axle is
the same as used by Caterham.

Same box used in Triumph's small saloon cars (Herald, Toledo, Dolomite (except
Sprint). Marina axle used by Caterham.
