Description
As the guy who made the Infiniti owners club, I thought I'd make an exclusive place for owners of the bottom-feeder model. The G20 was replaced by the totally unrelated G35 (Nissan Skyline), so consider this club a tribute to a decent car that fell victim to redundancy in Nissan's model lineup. R.I.P. G20, 1991-2002.
Quick G20 buyer's guide: the first-generation model (codenamed P10) ran from 1991-1996. In "1993.5" it got dual air bags to replace the mad mouse belts, the suspension got softened, and the automatic got electronic controls. In 1994 all G20s got a new chrome grille, and there came a new Touring model (G20t) that added a harder suspension and limited-slip differential.
After a hiatus in 1997-1998, the second-generation model (P11) showed up for 1999. It didn't drive as nicely anymore, due to 1. the front suspension getting downgraded from a multilink to struts, 2. the rear suspension getting downgraded from struts to a torsion beam (even worse), and 3. the loss of Nissan's special speed-sensitive steering. The quality of the leather and interior trim also took a dive, reducing the luxury quotient. In 2000, horsepower crept up from 140 to 145 thanks to added valve timing; the gear ratios and wheel design were also new. 2002 was a very short model run (since the new G35 replaced it in March of that year), though you can recognize them by their diagonal grille slots, plus the chunky 16-inch wheels on Sport models (which replaced the G20t).
I liked our 96 G20 a lot; it was the best-driving, most rich-feeling compact sedan of its time, and a nearly perfect automobile overall aside from the slow-a$$ acceleration. If you're willing to buy something that old, I'd wholeheartedly recommend one. The second-generation G20, on the other hand, is basically an overpriced Sentra.
Enjoy,
LSC400, former owner
