Thanks for the good advice Robin .

I think I'll hang on to the bike afterall as it is in remarkably good condition
.

However I might remove the original pipes to preserve them for show use only (
they look perfect outside) and make up and fit a botch pair or even a two into
one system for everyday use.

The slip on replacement mufflers that Dave Silvers sells for the CB 175 look
close. They have two bolts for attaching to the frame bracket which reaches up
to the frame . As you know the SS is unusual in that the mufflers are suspended
from underneath . But I reckon I could make up plates as you suggest and attach
them to this fixing point easily enough. Halfords sell various size coupling
sleeves which go around the header pipe and inside the muffler. They form a weld
like seal when the pipes heat up . I'll have to source a pair of down pipes
also in order to avoid hacking the originals.

I am also going to start to reduce the mileage that I am currently doing in
order to preserve the engine.

Hopefully I'll get another 40 years out of it.

P.S - anybody got a spare chainguard ? - it's the only thing I am missing

Hi,
well i couldnt tell you if the pricing is under or over, as i dont know of anywhere that offers an exact book price. We can only speculate on UK/ USA value. I guess based on Ebay sales. A USA black SS125a sold for about £1109.48, but in saying that it appears USA bikes appear to hold higher value than UK versions and that one was black.
There isnt an exact aftermarket replacement you can simply drop on, it would be a case of buying a pair of say cb125t silencers and making up some adapter  tubing, and brackets ( sounds more complicated than it really is.

The rough botch-it way would be to  hack off the old pipes 2 inches after the  aluminium sealing ring( so youll end up with downpipes, sealing ring and 2" of silencer tubing). Grind the unwanted material off to reveal the  tube underneath. Shim, slide the new pattern pipe on and use a standard  motorcycle exhaust clamp to secure . Then get some  steel/ aluminium sheeting to makeup a support bracket for the silencer, you might need to be a bit inventive on that.
If the pipes arnt blowing then ts not a problem for UK mot's as noise on older machines is up to the descression of the mot tester. I know my Old honda cb100n's get noiser as the baffles drop, but nothing really nasty lol and they always pass n mot. Infact i only replace the exhaust on my one cb because it had gone brown n rusty and the clanking baffles where irritating me.

What do you think - 1700euro too cheap ??

I believe the tires you saw were Michelin M29S - you can search on the messages and see previous threads where we discussed this topic

a quick search could not pick up any online vendor selling this tire... perhaps Michelin sent these tire molds to China like they seemed to have done with many other older tread patterns. Some others available are the Michelin M62 (denniskirk.com) IRC NR53 (dk.com) and IRC NR21 (jcwhitney.com)

due to changes in taxes/fees from online vendors like denniskirk (they add $5 for some vague fee) you may find your local dealer may be helpful, especially if they have a catalog for the IRC/ChenShin/Duro/Shinko tires. Some of the smaller scooters use 17in tires so they are still available.

I am pushing my local Cyclegear to my friends here in the Atlanta area because they offer a nice option to the local dealer. They offer tire swap services at reasonable prices, I am usually in and out in under 30 minutes. I know they are not in every city but if one is nearby, make a point of visiting them... it is worth it. Go here to see if you have a store nearby

Goodluck!! TS99

Hello Tom,

I saw in your photo album, that new tires appear on the blue bike in 2006,

What brand and size tires did you use???

I like the way the tread looks. I am not too concerned about a traditional tread
pattern.

I need to get tires.

Thanks for any advice

Hello and thanks for the tip on where you found a date on harness.

I just got the bike home today, and there is a 1967 on the same place you
mention, cable to ground in battery box area.

This bike was first registered in 1968, as far as I can tell.

It does not have a brake light switch for front brake lever which I understand
are like the ones fitted to the earlier production bikes.

The frame number is 106554, so I think this is a 1967 production year.

Thanks again!!!!

Hi,
Defiantly looks untouched, unless you  count the rot monster... I think 125.00 is a fair price for that, but it it will look worse  when viewed and  will cost more than  double to fix it up.
But if someone wants a project, then its defiantly a good priced canditate, concidering last  year i saw a shabby ss like that for shy ofr a grand at the county show ground.
Im not buying any more SS's, focusing in on doing the ones  i have

there would seem to be a couple of possibilities on why it has options/features it does - 1)it came from a country that demanded the brake light switch/reflector (Germany?Japan?) and perhaps the taillight was used on that assembly line or 2) someone updated the bike long ago with the better accessories/light/brake cable

The low serial number and the fact that the owner is calling it a '68 say it is an early production unit, and we rarely (never?) see these options on a '67-'68. It was pretty common to have servicemen visit Germany in the '60s... it is a possibility

Not only does it have the front fender reflector, but it has the later model
square-ish brakelight lens and the the front brake light operating switch can be
seen on one of the pics. All saying it is a later 1969 model, but it has the
low serial number. Would a dealer update a motorcycle that didn't sell in 1967
or 1968 to meet 1969 reflector and brake light requirements? So that does seem
odd, but a really nice unrestored SS125.

And why is the air intake not connected to the carb? It may not have been
running good and just parked, but may have had someones try to get it running.
Just being picky.

The black SS on ebay looks like a very respectable bike.
The bidding looks pretty strong right out of the shoot with 16 bids by 8
different bidders!

Somebody is going to get a nice and fairly unique bike. Hope the new owner joins
the group and shares the tales.

i think that Black ss is quite a good example of a roadworthy  all original unrestored bike. Ive never seen the helmet holder installed on an SS125, although i know it was mentioned in the  group.

Hi,
These poits covers seem to rotate on ebay, as they dont sell. I was looking at
buying one of these or getting my old one replated, but ive been really lucky
and recently bought a Genuine NOS one from someone in Uk for £15 including
postage. Its in new condition, no rust, has some very fine pitting, but fine for
its age.
So i thought i would post up the links to points covers i found on ebay.

Hi,
Which are you parting with the, the book or the memories?? ;).
I would be interested to  read what your thoughts are of the bike when you got it in the late 70's. By that time in Uk there was alot more 125's to choose from and the SS125a was nearing the point when most owners appeared to abandon them or get shot of them asap.
Anything about your expierences owning the machine, would be of interest.
As for the owners manual, myself i have one in good condition and there is an uploaded version on the  group for members to read through, but someone may be interested in buying it. It really depends on if anyone wants it, how much you want, where your located in th eworld and what condition it is in. If your in UK and have other SS125A related information such as brouchures, service history, old buff logbook, previous mot's or tax disc's... i might be interested for nostalgic fun- to share with the group.

I was tearing into my bike today and I found a date (1967) printed on the
grounding cable that goes from the frame near the battery cover into the battery
compartment. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for but it helped me.

Hi Chris.
The  date on the white wiring harness tag is not always an indication of the year. It can and sometimes will show a date the year before the bike was actually made. At least it should get you within one year of production. I have not looked for the tag on any of my SS125As or CL125As to know if Honda put them on the factory installed harness or not but on many of my other early to late 60s Hondas, with the same type of frames as the SS125A, the tag is located up inside of the cavity of the frame under the fuel tank area.

Hello,

Chris here again, I have my own Yahoo account now, so we won't be seeing MissKaty1959 logged in any longer.

I saw some posts in archive about there being a production date that can be found in wiring harness.

Can anyone tell me where the label will be found???

I have bike I should be getting in a few weeks. I would like to know as much about its age as I can find out.

Thanks

Chris
