'She doesn't deserve this'
Friends, loved ones of Rhoda McFarland mourn her violent death
February 8, 2008
CREST HILL -- Friends and family gathered Friday to mourn the senseless
slaying of former pastor and retail manager Rhoda McFarland.
"Rhoda, she doesn't deserve this. I know that," said long-time friend
Donald Newell of Joliet.
"What had she done?" Newell said, leaving the question hanging as the
grieving passed by McFarland's flag-draped coffin.
Rhoda McFarland's wake began Friday afternoon at Word of Life Christian
Center in Crest Hill.
McFarland was the manager of the Tinley Park Lane Bryant store where she
and four customers were shot to death. A Mokena woman survived the
attack with a bullet wound to her neck. She is in protective custody.
McFarland's wake was in the same church building where she once worked.
She was a pastor at Embassy Christian Center in Crest Hill, which has
since been renamed Word of Life Christian Center.
In addition to working for the church and managing Lane Bryant,
McFarland also was an employee of Nicor and served in the Air Force.
Sources say McFarland called 911 from the store to report the attack,
which her dad did not know.
McFarland¹s funeral will be today at Word of Life Christian Center
following a 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. visitation, said her father, Hilton
Hamilton.
She will be buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Joliet.
*Members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, plan to picket
today at the funerals of two of the victims.
They are scheduled to picket at the funerals of Sarah Szafranski, 22, of
Oak Forest, and Connie Woolfolk, 37, of Flossmoor. The church members
are known for demonstrating at funerals of fallen American soldiers.
"The wrath of God is pouring out on this nation," said Shirley
Phelps-Roper, an attorney and daughter of church founder Fred Phelps.
Phelps-Roper said soldiers are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan because of
the "homosexuals and other sins of America."
Phelps-Roper, a prominent member of the WBC, suggested that the Tinley
Park shootings were "God's will."
*
But Newell, a friend of McFarland for the last 25 years, said, "People
really need to get close to God and find out what God is."
He wondered aloud about men committing acts of violence against women.
"
"It's just traumatic," he said. "For what reason? I don't know. I'm
still trying to gather myself."

An Acer 399 at Walmart. However I plan on returning this machine and going
for a larger system. I do think I will get another Acer just the next model
up. This machine is the perfect diminsion for carring on bike. It is also a
nice machine to use. It just dosnt have enough ummp to run my programs. The
salesman thought it would but offered me to return it if it didnt. This
would be a perfect machine for a beginer or for work but it wont last me
long without upgrades so I just as well take it back and get what I need.
Atleast I got to try it out and see how much difference between my old one
and new. I will go for a Duo Core processer and a gig of ram now and that
should cover me.

there is not a lot of activity on this group as we have moved to the VROC
site. It is composed of over 22,000 members from around the
world. In addition, there is a section for the Great Lakes Vulcan
Riders group.
So you might get better response if you check there. Membership is

I have been to the Blue Hole many times as a kid....loved to feed popcorn to the trout.. sad to see it closed when I tried to take my daughter there way back.
Also used to go to Resthaven Wildlife Area fishing and hunting. I'm sure that is still there. Will have to try and get back to that area this summer
Ran up to near Sandusky Oh - near Lake Erie (about 230 miles round
trip). There used to be an attraction called "Blue Hole"
that was a mysterious formation of water sprung from the earth in a pure
and un-oxygenated state. Anyway, it fell to the
mega-attractions like Cedar Point, and closed in the late 90's.
Eventually, the state bought it, and extended the fish hatchery that was
originally a sideline.
It was difficult to find, and was closed when I got there. But
there is a creek that runs out of the hatchery, a beautiful fast running
stream of water flowing from the Blue Hole somewhere in the back.
Evidently, the trout LOVE IT.
This is the type of things I love riding for - unique things and
people. BTW - that is Buddy in the front, my biker friend who rides
with me when I ride alone. His story in on my webpage

The only way I know, is to load a u-haul with all your belongings and drive south thru the city... The first trip thru you will get traffic unless you go thru about 2-3am but after that, you can go east, west,or south for several hours before finding traffic laden areas.

I'm new to riding in chicago, and if anyone knows any shortcuts from the north side out to some nice windy roads sans traffic, i'd love to hear 'em.

That's good to hear about Laconia, I hadn't really heard anything
about it. My friends have already done Daytona, Sturgis and Myrtle
Beach (I missed them all because of work) so they're pretty set on
making this one. I'm just happy to be going SOMEWHERE lol
I will definitely keep Angola i the back of my mind though. You never

Do to problems over last few months we was in need of a new home. I ran a poll in OCT where You chose the VROC server over Yahoo. I stayed with Yahoo for awhile to if they would improve. But they have got worse by deleting good members, Bouncing post, and double post and more problems I wont list all. When a spoke with a few of you at Nashville Saturday you expressed concerns also and I took note. I had a couple request to try The VROC Main server again as we had met the goals Ken want before granting us a site there. I ask Ken yesterday when I got home and he replied today saying we are welcome to have our GLVROC on the main server and it would take a little while to get it going. However as
of 15 minute ago the site is there! I will leave this site up untill we all get moved. Any one not a member of VROC needs to join you can list you are a member of GLVROC and that will get you approved. If you have any problems you can post here and we will help you get set up. You can leave pics here if you want and we will keep the Yahoo for storage and other uses. I would like our first post there to be a thank you to Ken Bass For moving us to the main server. I consider it an honor to have our group there as he is very choosy about who he adds to his groups. It has been an honor to be a part of creating your Great Lakes VROC. Thank you for allowing me the privlage of creating this great group and thanks to Boomer for his hard work helping to keep the Yahoo site running. I wish Tim Snake Acree was here to be apart of this move. He will always be apart of this group. I am going to personaly ask KT to join us in June
at the rally they had planed to attend.

You can also use a news reader to get the posts and
respond. Makes it easy if you prefer email type of access. using
programs like Forte's Agent or Microsoft's Outlook Express. I
happen to use Xnews. You just subscribe to the groups from which
you want to get messages.
For more info on that, go to the VROC site
(www.vroc.org), and
under discussion there is the topic "Newsgroup".
