But Matthew, I just gave you my standard advice, "more throttle". Had a
great time with everybody, lots of fun and we need to do that again.

Frank, we missed you!!!! Get better.

I would love to do some short rides up here. I live in south county...out at the
end of Perimeter Road. I was going to ride this past saturday but have been
sick all week and both did not feel up to it and thought that getting cold would
not do me any good.
weekends are great and I do attend church on sunday so I can ride sunday
afternoon.

Thanks to the eleven guys who road yesterday. The temperature was chilly early on but was quite acceptable later on. Grouse Ridge will remain on my to do list till next year. We encountered snow and ice on the route at about 5.4k and up that made the riding challenging in places for sure. Grouse Ridge would have required climbing another 1.6k in elevation and was not probable, due the unknown conditions. The amount miles already ridden, miles left to be ridden with the daylight left in the day. Interesting that on this ride everyone I think except Doug P went down at least once. Chalk Bluff was fun but very slippery in places and caused a few dumps and one inadvertent mud bath.  A good time was had by all.

Thanks Doug for the photos. So nice to appreciate your accomplishments from the
warmth of a comfy chair. We still need to get a few SAE connectors for our
old-technology Gerbings to use on the DRZs. Heated gloves would be nice too.
Glad to hear the micro wire works well and you had a great day. -BMW/DRZ Michele

It was a great ride indeed with a little of everything.  The snow and ice reminded me of our trip to Topaz (Snopaz) last year.  I'm not sure how I keep finding myself in snow - I moved to California to get away from it.  Chalk Bluff Rd had plenty of slippery, nasty mud and a deep mudhole around every corner.  A lot of tense moments were experienced by this old guy.  I managed to get a few photos of the snow, but I was too busy in the mud to get my camera out.  CLICK HERE

Today was also equipment testing day for me.  I can heartily recommend Gerbing's microwire technology - my new jacket and gloves kept me toasty on the cold, early morning ride to Grass Valley.  I also replaced my aging Garmin 276C with a Garmin 60CSx and I give it high reviews.

See everyone Saturday morning at the appointed time and place. We will take a few minutes to discuss and decide about using the 1st choice route (7.6k Elv) or the 2nd choice (5.6k Elv) alternate route. The Grouse Ridge route may be OK. If we decide to use that route we can check out the conditions of the last climb to the lookout and proceed up if possible. So anyone who is riding do little research on road and weather before Saturday morning. Unless it is snowing or it looks like it's going to rain, this ride will be happening as planned. We will leave from the parking lot in front of the Safeway on Brunswick Rd. The Brunswick Rd exit is about midway between Grass Valley and Nevada City off of Hwy49. See map link <HERE>. I will not be maintaining a roster of riders and if you plan on riding please be fueled and ready to roll out at 8:30am. There is a small store in Washington for food and drinks, or bring whatever food and drink you'd like to carry. The ride is shown as a Google Maps Route or GPS file listed within my previous posts.  If a rider needs to shorten his or her ride. You can leave the planned route at the town of Washington or Hwy 20 or some other point of your choosing. This file <SaddlebackLO.GPX > in files section has 2nd choice route within it.
A friend and I will be at Denny's, Watt & Auburn near the Shell station 6:15 am for breakfast. Then up to Nevada City.

I wasn't able to use the 11-14-09.gpx file directly either. I loaded it up into Google Earth, saved the Google Earth .kml file then converted it to .gpx again ---- Now I can read it directly with my Garmin Mapsource software. I put out this coverted file right under Brad's file - it's called 11-14-09_Garmin.gpx. Right-click on the link, pick "Save Target As" and name the saved file as a .gpx file - you should then be able to open it with Mapsource and trasfer it to your GPS.

sportbike riding position.

We had a great ride too. Fun crowd.

Trail from Pollack Pines. I had NO IDEA we would get up to 7,000 Ft.
Thank God for hot coffee.

Oh, by the way, I can't afford a sport bike, so I just get left in the
dust (as my wife puts it) on my KLR. He's got twice the displacement and
three times the horsepower and sticky tires and I got the tail end of
the line.

Thank you, Mark.

Really appreciate the set-up you did and the fact that the ride was just as advertised! Was a nice ride and if you do it again, I'll put my boy on the back... again, just as advertised, beginner ride, easily done, even 2-Up.

peace
kj

Hi Aaron~ I just went out and checked my FMF and if you're talking about the actual
muffler mine is the same oval shape from end to end. No indentations from the header pipe
to the tail pipe.

Anyone with an FMF pipe on their KLR - is it supposed to have some kind of indentation on the inside of the pipe? Just got a new one & need to know if it's defective or supposed to be designed that way.

Bummer. Where is the closest gas from Downieville? Thanks Bill.

The <weather > on ride day looks OK at this time. Although it may have snowed by then. The altitude of Grouse Ridge is nearly 8k. As an alternative route going to Downieville is an option and is lower with a max altitude of  5.6k <AltRoute > This route to Downieville is very fun and a great ride alternative. So unless it snows on the roads or it looks like it's going to rain on ride day, this ride will be happening as planned. All other departure details remain the same.
