Since you can hear the speed change in the blower, it's probably not the problem. Move the ATC to the different positions while the car is running and check...

I've got the Haynes one, but it is really weak compared to my old Chiltons one for 1968 to 1976 Fords...I have the newer Chiltons as well that actually covers...

If you really want to know how to do things, get the 1978 5 volume Ford shop manual set. The thing I like about Chiltons is that they sometime have short cuts...
