I'm sure someone here can and will correct me if I'm mistaken, but don't most service manuals call for the oil pump housing to be packed with petroleum jelly...
Just putting oil in a pump will allow it to all drain back and the pump will not create enough suction on startup to pull all the air and oil in the suction...
