i think that maybe he has a 61 which doesn't have the weight.it seems to me that a nine inch could be shipped by greyhound if you removed the axles and center section.maybe ship the axles in a box on the same bus.he should be able to find the center sention locally.

Mark, congrats on quitting, sanding and painting will take your mind off just about anything.

Most "car" rear ends sit above the springs, rather than below like ours, so none of those will bolt in without some cutting and welding. The rear axle from a '61 to '64 Ford Galaxie is the same width, and is a 9 inch unit. The "small bearing" version (the most common one) actually shares axle shafts with the Econoline 9 inch; literally identical in width.

If your axle is a 4.00:1 (code 02 on the tag) you can bolt in a 3.50:1 to drop the revs a bit. Keep in mind the 144 had a 7 inch while the 170 had a 7-1/4. They look the same, but the pinion shaft is an inch longer on the 7-1/4, which means the driveshaft needs to be an inch shorter. The Econoline 7 and 7-1/4 axles came in only two ratios - 3.50:1 and 4.00:1. You can get taller gears from the "car" versions of those - 3.20 and 2.80 were available, among others, but it's not an easy job to change ratios since the third member doesn't drop out on those.

If you want a taller axle than that, or an easier ratio change, by far the easiest swap is to find an Econoline 9 inch axle from a '63 to '67 Heavy Duty or 240-powered model. 3.00 gears were common on those, but will probably be too tall for a 144 on hills. I'd stick with 3.50 or 3.25 on a 144. That's a bolt-in, other than needing a driveshaft with the big rear U-joint, and there is a factory one like that for '63-up H.D. models. For springs I'd lose those extra leaves someone installed in yours, and take it back to five leaves like it came with originally. I've got no complaints about the ride on any of my trucks with the stock rear springs.

Tell me where and I'll send pics. Now as for the subject of this note, I've been driving Mater more often lately, and since I installed the tach freeway speeds make me nervous. I don't know what Red Line is for the 144, but I don't like cruising at 6400 rpm. I would like to find a passenger car rear axle/spring assembly to bolt in place of the stock unit. My goals: higher gear ratios ( lower rpm at highway speed), lower ride height,so I don't need a step ladder to get onto the tailgate, softer ride, so the rear tires don't leave the ground when cornering or crossing speed bumps. and finaly, to support whatever engine/trans. changeover I decide on in the future. Please help, I know the Econoworld holds the key to my quest. Thanx, Mark in Sac.

Terry, I don't check my groups or e-mail often, but this morning Claire and I
were trying to post pics of Mater and I opened the Dwezzle album and saw R.I.P.
so I scrolled back to this post. We both are sorry to hear this sad news. Claire
took many photos at the Stockton meet, and she put Dwezzle's photo up on my
wallpaper three weeks ago because she had found those pictures. We will post
them today. Our dogs are such a blssing for us humans and we know you loved
your little Dwezzle. Thanks for bringing him to the meet in Stockton this year.

Fred, it's made in Mexico, marked "Plasticos Impala SA" on the bottom and on the
tires. Same size as the Amloid Big Boy trucks, similar construction, but not the
same molds. This one came in a sealed cellophane bag, no box, and the seller
also had a tow truck made by the same company. I saved the photo of the tow
truck, but didn't bid on it since there were a couple other bidders already.
I'll post it in the Toys folder if Yawhoo will let me.

Francis, you should have a mounting hole there already unless it's been filled
in. All the early Econolines had a manual choke (unless special ordered like
Terry's Wahmbulance...) with the choke control on the doghouse. From there the
cable poked through the radiator frame and bulkhead, and ran up and across the
valve cover to the carb.

Francis, we talked about these several months back, but apparently Yawhoo is
messing with the search again since it's not working at all right now.

I've seen a van in the junkyard with metal nozzles from something, but I don't
know for sure what they were from. '50s Dodge truck, or something like that?
Just a wild guess. Maybe someone has some extra original ones they can share?
Hopefully one of the repro guys will eventually make some up in fiberglass or
ABS.

Hey ...don't know my way around a '61 but there should be a bump on the front of
the doghouse near
the e-brake handle ... that's where the choke is generally installed ... my '65
has a bump on the
other side as well ... that's there for the aux. heater unit control ... right
now it just happens
to have my electric fan switch ...

There's a spot on the front of the engine cover for the choke . It's by
the e brake not on the handle . Someone on the group might have a pic .

Next to the Brake with it up or down then drill a hole.... wonder why it did not have a hole in the doghouse .... interesting... Thank you Herb..

you have a 61 5 window... so you would have the same layout as mine... but I have a van..

maybe e brake is engaged.... sorry if I sound stupid.... so that would be up....

I have another Question...

The Elderly man up the street has been watching me restore my 61 Van and came
over one day and handed me a choke cable, with the chrome that looks like all
the other chrome knobs on the van... He asked me were is the choke.. I dont have
one I said to him. He just looked at me and said how do you get it stated.. I
told him.. I have to left the dog house top and mess around with it and it
starts.. because I did not have the air cleaner like I do now.. cant mess with
it now.. I have the 61 shop manual and it does not show me were the choke cable
is mounted. Does anyone know were it is mounded or have a photo of placement...
feel kind of dumb.... now..would be a lot easier to have a pull push knob than
to have to mess with the carb by hand.

Thanks for any help... might be one for Jay ....

Hello Everyone

I have a question about Defroster Nozzles.... I was looking up under the dash
working on the Radio and hit one of the Nozzles and to my surprise it is made
out of paper like a cardboard... How have you guys dealt with this problem ...
or is it just my problem. Does anyone have two good ones for sale or a plan
layout to make new ones.. any ideals that would help.

Thanks

Francis Santa Fe, New Mexico.

wife in it ...
thereby justifying the expense ... one of my vans is a virgin ... YOURS PEEPS

Your right, I was thinking of the lens.
Bob NCWA

No, they mount with two holes on the back, I don't think our own mounts with three though, I think it's two also. I think the lense is three and the light body is two. Got my van tarped up right now so I can't see. I saw them on a couple of rig's at terry's meet though, and they look really good. Here's a couple of pic's from there.

Dave, do they use the same 3 existing holes for mounting?
Bob NCWA

I Just got my '50 pontiac taillights from "speedway motors" and it's a pretty sweet setup, nice heavy feel, real glass, and good chrome w/gasket for $25 bucks a piece. Oh yeah, 4 1/4 inches across just like the econoline lense.

Today I spotted a dark gray pickup along Highway 49 just north of Placerville
(CA). It had a tarp over the roof, so I couldn't tell the window count. No front
bumper, so I couldn't tell the year either. Anyone know this one?

Exactly right, two screws to the body, three for the lens. Vans will need a
gasket or seal between the socket and body to keep water out.

Cool, it's encouraging that someone's making quality products. I've played with
different taillights over the years, but I'm still undecided on which are my
favorites. Hmmm.
