John
Thanks for loading your details and the pic. The car looks great
with the M-Parallels.
In terms of the meet at Southern BM, was a great afternoon.
We had 2 540iLE's, an Alpina B10, my M5 an E46 M3, assorted other
E34's and E30's, in addition to my M5.
Andrew & Jimmy from Southern BM were great.
I have pics if anyone is interested.
Cheers
David

I was just reading one of the old messages, where there was talk of an
M5 being written off in Melbourne.
Some of you may know Steve Gasparinatos, who raced an E34 M5 (his
daily driver) in Targa Tasmania for nearly 10 years.
Steve bought a Macao Blue car (like mine) brand new in 1992, and raced
it in TT for a few years until a mishap in the 1996 race saw him lose
the car at 180km/h, and he rolled down an embankment, the car was
written off, but driver and navigator were OK. No doubt the half roll
cage fitted helped.....
Steve bought another 1992 Macau Blue car straght afterwards (second
hand of course), and continued to race it until about 2002 when he
stopped. He uses the wreck for spare parts.
Steve's a great guy, and a great driver. I took my M5 down to Hobart a
few years ago, and we spent a day out at his local race circuit,
Baskerville, just out of Hobart. We had a blast of a day, try as I
might, I couldn't get within 2 secs of his lap times (69 secs vs 67
secs).
I last saw Steve a few months ago out at Sandown, where he was test
driving an E60 M5, which he was considering buying, but I haven't
called him for a while, so I don't know if he bought it or not.
Anyway, that makes at least 2 of the original cars that have been
written off.
Regards
John
Hi again,
I'm not sure if everyone realises or not, but one of the 45 cars
imported into Australia was one of the first 3.8 litre models, with a
5 speed gearbox. It was imported specially for the then CEO of BMW
Australia. I've seen this car, it's owned by a guy in Armidale, in
Melbourne. The car has done of 250,000 kms, and has had a hard life.
It's a red car, with cream leather, but when I saw it, it was pretty
dirty, and needed a lot of TLC. The guy who currently has it (and I
must admit it's been about 9 months since I visited him last, so he
could have sold it for all I know) picked it up for a song. I saw it a
couple of days after he bought it, and it wasn't running properly, it
seemed to have a fairly big miss in the engine.
Has anyone else seen this car?
Regards
John
Thanks for the welcome Dave. I've added my car to the database, and
posted a pic as well. Also, if anyone is interested in reading my
horror story of my engine rebuild all those years ago, it's available
on my website as a 3MB MS Word Document at:

Guys, how the meet go at Southern BM go a few weeks ago? I'm bummed
that I didn't know about this group earlier, I live only a couple of
minutes away from Southern BM, and would have loved to meet some of
you. Oh well, hopefully there will be a next time!

Welcome John. I am glad you found your way here.
Please feel free to post some pics and the details of your car on the
database. If you would like me to do this, please send pics and
details like VIN etc to me at david.b@...
I had noticed you out there in the online M5 community - even saw
your post on the E34M5 Yahoo site about your new M-Parallels. Like
you, I am also a big fan.
At some point in the past year or so, i also read an online story
with lots of pics about your engine rebuild experience - written kind
of like a diary was it? I am not sure where I saw it and can't semm
to find it now, but that made a great read. If it is still on the net
somewhere, maybe you could post a link.
John, this is a new site and as a small one base around 45 cars and a
handful of personal imports, I doubt we will ever achieve the
critical mass of the big E34 M5 boards out there, but it is ours and
with its very small focus, should prove fun to be a member of, so
welcome and we all look forward to meeting you and your M5.

Hi all,
My names John Robinson, i've got one of the original Oz delivered E34
M5's. I've had the car since 1998, and have been active in the online
M5 commumity since then, I can't beleive that I only just found out
that there is an Oz group today!
I used to run a website dedicated to the E34 M5 (the M5 Springboard),
but closed it down about 5 years ago when it started to take over my
life :-) I hang around on the world-wide E34 yahoo group
(groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwe34m5) as well.
My car is a 1992 Macau Blue Oz delivered car, it has 197000 kms on it
at the moment. I bought it in 1998 wen it had 92000kms on the clock.
ABout a year later, I found that it had a cracked block, and then went
through a painful and very expensive engine rebuild process.
I've got rid of the self levelling rear suspension, and replaced it
with bilstein shocks, and eibach springs. On the front I still have
the standard springs, and Koni adjustable shocks, along with the E30
spring isolators which lower the front by about 6mm. About 2 weeks
ago, I found some M Parallel replicas, 18x8 all round. I've always
wanted these wheels, but never been able to find them. The only other
mod is that I have replaced the gear shift with a UUC Short Shoft kit.
Before, my gearshift used to feel like a wooden spoon in a pot of
porrige, and now it feels like a rifle-bolt.
Some of you may have seen my car in the Jan 2003 edition of MOTOR
magazine, they did a past blast article on the E34 M5, and I offered
my car up for photos. I've got a copy of the article on my website at
http://www.jrobbo.com/M5
Anyway, I'm stoked that I've found out about this group (thanks Luke!)
and I look forward to talking with, and hopefully meeting, all of you.
Regards
John

Members,
As we had few takers who were able to head over early, it appears
that the dyno run has fallen through.
But regardless of the dyno run, the BBQ, general drool and pic
session is still on at 5.30pm at Southern BM.
At this stage, I have down as attending the BBQ, the following
(nicknames are from the European Car Club of Australia forum):
- EVLBM - 540iLE
- 95-540iLE - E34 M5 (me)
- Rated M - E30 Alpina
- ohbugger - E34 Alpina B10
- Tincan - E34 535iS
- ADJ - 325iS
- V - E30 325i
- Tom - E36 323i
- barge - E28 528i
- Windy - E21 318i
- Crzybm - E34 535i turbo
- Mad Lil E21 - E21 323i
- e32lover - E32
- bobz - E34 M5
- Gerry - 540iLE
Some of those listed above indicated they were likely to attend if
they could. If you are on the list and not coming, please let me know.
Similarly, if anyone is intending on coming to the BBQ who is not
listed, please let me know.
Look forward to meeting you on Thursday.
Cheers
David

As mentioned, I will be in Melbourne on 19 jan collecting the M5. We
currently have a good selection of cars coming along to Southern BM
at 5.30pm, including a couple of LE's, a couple of M5's a couple of 3
series guys and even an Alpina B10!
Andrew will host a BBQ at Southern BM while we drool over each others
cars.
He has also arranged the possibility of a dyno run. This would
involve getting to Southern BM a little earlier, at 4pm, before
heading off around the corner to the dyno guy, who would do a power
run and graph each car. Cost per car is $80.
If interested, let me know. We will need firm figures for the dyno
run by the end of the week.
Cheers

I my case I would prefer a car that was standard including SLS etc. and would try to find one like it. My car has 204K's BMW service history, new shocks all around at 150K, replaced the cam chain tensioner etc. and I would be lucky to get $28K for it if I tried to sell it today, there is no values in cars at the moment, and our cars still carry the $200K service costs which not many people can afford or understand, also because there are so few cars around there is no specialist reproduction parts that make owning an older 911 affordable etc.
I think you are way out in your values. There was a 95 M5 in Japan for sale with all options and 54K KM for AU$32K.
Wow! I find that depressing.... Is that really all these cars are worth now?? I've been trying to sell mine casually for a little while now and have had very little interest. I genuinely thought it was worth $10000 more than what they are asking for that one in Queensland.... Am I WAY out in my values or is this just a bad time to be selling these cars?
Mine is a VERY nice one (I know everybody says that but it really is!) 150000kms and in perfect condition with all options. The only thing that I can see that might put people off is that I've removed the SLS and added camber plates and adjustable swaybars. In my opinion that makes it more desirable and less of a liability but maybe I'm not in the majority there?
Hmm.... That's really interesting. I'm so surprised. Oh well, I guess I'll be keeping it for a bit longer then! I'm certainly not selling it for those kind of figures..... I'm not that upset, it's WAY too good a car to sell anyway. I might have to start servicing it myself though...
I am sorry to say that prices of all E34's have collapsed in the past 12 months or so. As such, this price is probably realistic.
I admit that I paid a lot less than $32k (low $20's) for mine, which is a very good condition original M5 with 250,000k's.
I know someone else who bought one in the last few months with about 110,000kms and paid $27k. And there is one for sale in Syney at present with 106,000kms - asking price $25,000.00 - that at least looks clean in the ad.
That said, it is a case of supply and demand. E34's may be reaching a point where most consider them to be an old (and potentially troublesome) BMW but E34 M5's are not yet old enough to be considered a classic. As time passes and fewer good cars remain, the prices will firm and improve.
But until then, if you are selling, you need to market the car and its benefits well to find the right buyer who will pay a premium for your car.

Good to hear - I hope you can get there.
So far we have 2 LE's, 2 M5's (including mine) and a 535is saying
they are planning on coming, so even if there are no more takers,
it's going to be fun.
Anyone else?

I will be in Melbourne on the 19th and 20th of January.
I will be collecting and driving my new E34 M5, and would be
interested in meeting up with Melbourne based members of this forum
(and of the other forum I administer - on 540iLE's) with an interest
in the E34 M5's and LE's.
Thursday evening would probably be the best time, and Andrew from
Southern BM has told me he would be happy to host us.
Whether he will throw on a BBQ and a few beers, I don't know as I
forgot to ask - but I will!
If anyone is keen to meet up at anytime during those 2 days, please
let me know, and if we can organise to have a few of us together at
once, even better!!

1990 E34 M5
spoke with Dean today about the wreck, and he said he wants $5800
for the engine, g/box, tailshaft, diff and ECU's or $7500 for the
whole car. Apparently all the mechanicals are in pristine nick. good
luck with the E30 conversion, what a beast!!

Im interested in the running gear, Im planning on building a hard
hitting E30, would be a screamer with the 3.6. Also interested in
the 9" rears if they check out to be true, straight and in good

Hi Luke,
I know Dean at Peninsula BM pretty well, having owned 2 E24 M6's, a
540LE and an E32 740 at various times over the past 3 years I think
I'm his superannuation policy!!
I have seen the car, and a photo is now in the database. The
original idea was for Dean from Peninsula BM to buy the wreck on my
behalf and between us build an M5 touring from combining it and a
Australian delivered 525i touring. At the last minute, the float of
a business I own part of was postponed leaving me short of cash and
I had to back out.
Dean went ahead and bought the car because it went a killer price.
The car has hit many things really hard, pretty much everything
below the bumper line is gone. The interior is an M cloth and
leather combo which is looking the worse for wear due to the car
being left out in the open pre auction with the sunroof open and
bugger all glass left in it, I think it should clean up OK. I
believe they've had the engine running after replacing the sump, i
reckon the gearbox would be touch and go to be damaged, but don't
know much more as I'm due in there this week with my M6 and was
planning on talking to him then.
As a guide he's said the interior is worth $2K+ and I've priced
running gear before at about $8K, but I'm sure Dean would listen to
offers. The phone number is 03 5976 2011. If I learn anymore later
this week I'll post a note on the site.

Amazing how many LE owners would like an E34 M5 as well.
There are at least 3 of us with both that I know of (one of whom, Don,
in Adelaide, is the owner of my old LE - #19 and a museum piece M5 in
Calypso).
I don't know how we will manage to find an E34 M5 for every owner of a
540iLE.
There were 70 LE's and only 45 E34 M5's!! And we know that not all of
them are left in one piece!
There are a few for sale at present though, including one on EBay with
low kms and a vey low starting price.
Cheers
David

David,
First of all you are a devil for punishment. That said, congratulations.
I certainly hope that at some stage the site will be able to identify
vehicles for sale. I hope to have the bodywork on the LE completely
finished shortly and an E34 M5 would look great beside the LE.
Give me a buzz when you are coming over.

David, the car has just been delivered to Peninsula BM in Melbourne, and appparently took a big hit in the front right, and is quote " bent like a banana" - so the body is not repairable.
Having said that, the engine / driveline is largely undamaged, albeit with a reasonably high mileage (240K), so there is a possibility that all the components, interior trim etc. could be transferred to another "donor" shell.
After going through a similar exercise with my 540, (and knowing all the hidden costs involved), Im not sure that I'd recommend this.
Cheers, Geoff.

Do you know any more about the M5 that was written off - definately not a
rebuild? Where is the wreck?

Well done David, you must have been reading my mind - I was just thinking that this group is long overdue. I will be taking some photos on the weekend so look out for them next week.
Also, on a sadder note, I have just heard that one of "our" cars has just been written off in Melbourne. VIN code GA25046, dark blue with grey motorsport cloth interior.
It will be interesting to see how many of the 45 are still with us.
