engine cranks but will not hit all the time, have replaced carb., points, condencer, coil and plugs it will not run will not crank. any ideas on fixing this...

Only thing I see left is the timing. The distributor should be checked to see if it is on top center firing order when then mark on the flywheel is in the top...

The piston is on comp. stroke the valves are closed.When the motor starts it back fires and will not rev up then it just quits and will not start back up....

If it's been sitting --check for a stuck valve-check firing order-- possible burnt valve(hope not)All are causes of backfiring--------------...

Check your spark plugs, if they are black from being flooded they will cause your symptoms, if the plugs are brown or white, then they are OK. It does not...
