DETROIT, Jan. 1-(AP)-An automobile engine of steel stamping construction and another employing sleeve valves were described to the Society of Automotive Engineers today as offering a possible answer to increasing costs of manufacture and operations.
The SAE, holding its annual meeting here, heard Paul Klotsch, of Cincinnati, tell of the design and construction of a four-cylinder engine fabricated from steel stampings, steel tubing and screw machine parts.
The engine, used in the Crosley automobile and weighing 120 pounds, was described as producing better revolutions per minute.
The cylinder block contains about 125 pieces with copper in sheet, wire or paste form applied in every joint. The assembly is copper-brazed in a 60 foot furnace at 2060 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ralph L. Skinner, of Detroit, producer of the sleeve valve engine, said it offered possibilities of reducing
car weight as much as 800 pounds. He said the slide valve engine operates without detonation on
lower octane fuels, gives better performance and economy and eliminates present troublesome "hot spots."
Other benefits, he declared, include compactness. Abbreviated crankshafts and greater power from less fuel.

Happy New Year, CCOCers. The new Crosley Supper Club is open, a joint effort of
the Powel Crosley Estate Foundation, Manatee County and Milan Catering and Event
Design. The venture will help provide the money the foundation uses to preserve
the charm and elegance of the Powel Crosley estate at 8374 N. Tamiami Trial in
Sarasota.

The Crosley Supper Club is very un-Crosleylike. It's membership-based, with all
fees going to the foundation. Each month, the chefs create a four-course dinner
with locally-supplied fresh ingredients. Dinner service starts at 6 p.m.
followed by late-night entertainment and a cigar-and-brandy bar starting at 8
p.m.. Events finish at 10 p.m.

Dinners offer three choices of dinner entrées and optional wine and bar service.
Milan Catering also provides the event management and catering for the
foundation's galas. Click New Photos for a preview.

Location:   Near Guadalcanal, Pacific Ocean., CROSLEY CAR OWNERS CLUB (CCOC) - 4526 29th Avenue, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53140-3044, (262) 652-3034
Notes:   The destroyer USS Helena, part of a fleet under attack by four Japanese fighter planes, downs one of the Zeros in the first known wartime use of the new Crosley proximity fuze which is later credited with being the main weapon in shortening World War II. The fuze is widely considered the third most important product development of the war years, ranking behind only the atomic bomb and radar.

James V. Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy said, "The proximity fuze has helped blaze the trail to Japan. Without the protection this ingenious device has given the surface ships of the Fleet, our westward push could not have been so swift and the cost in men and ships would have been immeasurably greater."

British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill was quoted with "These so-called proximity fuzes, made in the United States... proved potent against the small unmanned aircraft (V-1) with which we were assailed in 1944."

Commanding General of the Third Army, George S. Patton said, "The funny fuze won the Battle of the Bulge for us. I think that when all armies get this shell we will have to devise some new method of warfare."

Manatee County, Florida: The Powel Crosley Theater, run by Manatee County's
Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, didn't offer its traditional "A
Victorian Christmas" production in December, and will also not be producing any
other shows this winter or spring. Anne Van Wormer, the business manager for the
Bradenton Area Convention Center and Powel Crosley Estate, said the county
workers who run the theater "got too busy with other things this year.", citing
the recent renovation of the Bradenton Area Convention Center as the main
reasons. Productions at The Powel Crosley Theater will return this fall, she
said, with a season starting with a play based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Next December, the Crosley plans to bring back "A Victorian Christmas."

We hope the past Crosley Theatre successes will continue on after the staff
catches its breath.

Neither Barbra Streisand nor Liza Minelli made an appearance at this year's
Consumer Electronics Show in Los Angeles, but Crosley Radio, itself iconic and
which brought radio to the masses, was very much alive and kicking at the Las
Vegas Convention Center. Founded by Powel Crosley ("The Henry Ford of Radio") in
1920, Crosley Radio grew into one of the most successful electronics
manufacturers of the early 20th century. The Crosley inexpensive tuners, once a
staple in American homes (including yours truly), have become highly-
collectible classics sought after by collectors and Crosley fans worldwide, and
they define the "retro" aesthetic we think of when we imagine a Crosley radio.

The original Crosley brand died in 1956. Fast forward to 1989, when a savvy
group of investors perceived the Crosley name's value and began to develop a
striking line of modern audio equipment, radios to jukeboxes which wrap
Crosley's traditional good looks around the latest technology. Wood cabinets and
thick fabric grilles are paired with old-fashioned knobs and dials, all fully
functional in tandem with integrated iPod docks and hidden CD players. The look
may be 1940, but sound quality is very 2013.

We all love to see elements of Americana evolve like this, even if there's
little connection to their origins besides a name and logo and design
sensibility. Sure it's contrived, but hey, if Hollywood can reinvent itself over
the years, why shouldn't Crosley, the brand that brought entertainment and
transportation to the masses, do the same?
