On a CD body, were the support brackets that attached from the grille
to the frame painted body color or were they black?

Also, is the CD windshield taller than a CC? I have found a center
garnish molding that holds the rear view mirror but it is definitely
shorter than the CD windshield height.

==========================

  Using contacts from his
Indianapolis days,
Crosley lined up
editorial mentions for
his new American
Automobile Accessories
Company (or Americo) and
Insyde Tyres in magazines
such as MoToR and
Automobile Repairer. He
also bought ads in
Popular Mechanics and
other consumer
publications.
The modest single-column
ads carried the
heading "Inner Armor for
Tires", along with a
descriptive drawing of
the product in use.

  Small though they were,
the magazine
advertisements pulled in
orders by the hundreds.
Business grew so fast
that Crosley soon dropped
his other activities in
favor of developing new
products for Americo.

  Then winter came,
bringing with it near
disaster.

  "That winter -- the
winter of 1916 -- almost
wiped out the business,"
Crosley
remembered, "because in
those days, people with
cars just put them away
during poor weather."

==========================
Next: Powel Crosley
fights back.

Now there's a tough one.
I haven't seen a Crosley
in original paint for
decades, so I can only
guess. (Big help, huh?)
Hmmm ... after they were
stamped they needed to be
painted almost
immediately to avoid
rusting, so I'd say it'd
be primer.
To avoid extra labor
costs, Crosley Motors
would logically just use
body color on any part it
made. (Non-Crosley-made
parts such as generators
and the like came already
painted.)
The only way to really
know is to cut down
through the paint layers
to the first coat.
I salute you on your
quest for historical
accuracy!

This one I know. No,
they're identical in
height, Larry. You're
sure that center garnish
molding is Crosley?

Powel Crosley had already decided that his future was in the automobile
business.
So he hung in, with Ira J. Cooper advancing hundreds of dollars to keep the
small business afloat.
In May of 1916, he bought out Cooper's interest with $1,500 in notes. Cooper
was ready to launch the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, so he was just as happy to
sell out.

Crosley added several products to his line, including a blowout patch called
Tredkote (which he later patented), and his own gasoline fortifier, Kick. The
business grew so quickly that he was forced to move it to larger quarters.
A few months later, the company had to move again, to 1601 Blue Rock Street in
Cincinnati's Northside district.
This building, which stands today, would eventually house the first Crosley
factory and serve as WLW's home in 1922.

Next: Powel Crosley goes for the bigtime.

Here's the rare Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly with the Crosley connection. Wright bought his cars from Happy Motors in Madison WI (still in business, I hear, operated by the Happy family - their real surname). After entering Happy Motors, he would look at a Crosley and shout "I'll take THIS one!" and slam his cane down on the hood. The salesman would mark on the order pad "Sold, one new red Crosley number #***** to Mr. F.L. Wright, with hood damage noted".

Summary
Well, it's finally time to get rid of some of my project and collector vehicles that I have collected over the past 20-30 years. The first to go will be this very cute little 1950 Crosley Wagon. Much of the nearly rust free outside body retains its original green and cream paint. The only rust perforation of the outside body is on the drivers side front fender where the fender and floor meet. The stainless beltline trim is absolutely ding free and needs only polishing. There is rust in the floorboards as indicated in the photos. There is also some dents and dings. Passenger side rocker is shoved in and there are some dents in the left rear tailgate pillar. The lower tailgate shows filler on most of the lower panel but there is only a couple metal patches welded in under all that skim coat of filler. The patches measure about 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 and 4 x 4. There is NO evidence that there was rust existing previously, so repair was probably due to perforation of some other nature. I was told that the engine was just rebuilt before I bought it. I have no evidence to back that up except for the fact that everything on the motor was very nicely painted then (that may have been nearly 27 yrs ago). I have periodically turned the motor over by hand over the years. As you can see the instrument panel is very clear with very nice bright print. The bezel will probably nedd to be chromed. The seat frames are in excellent shape. Even the covers and padding are not too bad. I tried to show in the engine pictures that all the accessory stuff is there - cab, air cleaner, starter, generator, intake and exhaust manifolds, etc. Things that I know are missing are - headlight bulbs, parking light lenses, one tail light lense, the aluminum sill plate for the passenger door, radio, speaker and rear seat, if they had one. I have most of the glass although there is some of it broken. Most broken glass is intact enough for a pattern. Passenger side windshield cracked by BB gun. Ther is a transferable NY registration from 1965 for this car. I may have left out something that you need to know, if so, please email me through the "ask the seller a question" link. I reserve the right to end this auction early, as I have it available in other forums. Two hundred dollar deposit within 3 day end of auction, balance by certified check that is verified by clearing before pickup. Cash on pickup is always welcomed. Thanks for looking. ?This vehicle is being sold for parts only and is not operational or street legal. Therefore, upon purchase, it will need to be either towed or trailered. eBay encourages its members to learn about their state laws governing vehicle sales prior to the sale or purchase of a vehicle.?

Here's an Arizona CD wagon. NOTE: This is a growing puzzle, but we're seeing more and more Crosleys on eBay with the warning that the cars are "not street legal", and the vendors are not all the same persons. When I've asked why, the vendors say something like the car isn't operational at the moment. I'm beginning to think these people have read some other eBay Crosley ad where the vendor said this and they actually believe Crosleys aren't street-legal under the road laws of 2006! Anybody??

Lou, Thanks for the reply. The brackets have the original body
color on them. I was assuming they should have been black since
they are going from the frame to the grille but I just finished
holding them in position and realized that they actual mount to the
hood support cross bar not the grille. Now it makes more sense that
they are body color since that were probably attached to the lood
support and painted as an assembly.

Take a look at the pic of the serial number tag on this car. It
shows that the tag was attached to the body and masked off prior to
the body being painted. My car was done the same way but the mask
was a lot straighter! Has anyone seen body color paint under the
serial number tag? Or how about the tag painted body color?

quecat* is the seller.
That section is required by ebay for part cars, that is there writeup that you have to have in your auction. Just as I can not write that I do have a title for it. (their rules) Ebay wants the seller to pay the higher fees for a titled car. You couldn't drive this away any way and thats why I have it in the parts/accessories area.

Success in placing his

Buyers for the Chicago

Summary
Vehicle Description PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BID. This is a nice example of a 1947 Crosley two door sedan or coupe. If you are not familiar with the name Crosley, then let me give you some information about it: I would say this is a real piece of americana. Born before corporate America, when costumer service and made in the U.S.A. had a stronger meaning. This cars were built by Powel Crosley from Cincinnati. Small cars with lots of inovations for its time secured the Crosley car's respected place in the American automobile industry. The purpose of its creation was to build a practical car that would not only operate at low cost, but also sell at a low price after the big depression. Powel Crosley built appliances, radios, marine and industrial engines, he also built several prototypes of motorcycles. Cars succeded during the war years, but after that Automobile industry was more oriented to big gas guzzlers that flourished since 1949. This was the subtle change going on in America - "bigger and better", more cylinders, more horsepower, longer, lower etc. That social change spelled doom for the Crosley and other small cars. Some of his engines were still used by the military and some were licensed for European vehicles like the Panda, Siata and Bardini during the fifties. Body designs, OHC engines, four disc brakes where some of his innovations. http://www.crosley.com/header.html http://www.ggw.org/~cac/SS-Cobras-part2.html http://www.crosley.com/history.html Now let's get down to the description: THIS IS A CAR WITH NO TITLE AND IS NOT A TURN KEY CAR, BUT WITH LITTLE EFFORT WILL BE READY FOR THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS BOUGHT WITH A BILL OF SALE, BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS OWNER LOST THE TITLE. LAST REGISTRATION WAS HERE IN TEXAS, BUT THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO, SO THERE IS NO RECORD OF THIS CAR BECAUSE OLD DATA WAS REMOVED, BUT OBTAINING TITLE SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM THROUGH A TITLE COMPANY SUCH AS BROADWAY FOR AROUND $150 DOLLARS. CAR WAS TOTALLY RESTORED AFTER THAT, AND A RESTORED ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR ARE INCLUDED. THIS CAR WILL BE SOLD WITH A BILL OF SALE. http://www.broadwaytitle.com I'm listing this car for a friend of mine, Bill Hougthon from San Antonio, Texas. He is a retired fellow with a remarcable talent to fix and mantain cars. He customizes engines, and does fine paint jobs among other things, and as well as I, he has a lot of cars he needs to part with. He is selling this 1947 gray Crosley in very good shape. This car does not appear to require anything right now. Bill did a superb custom painting job, so the body is shinny and straight, glass is fine, all interior is in very good shape, almost like new, with rubber flooring and nice clean interior. All systems were restored, and know the car is going to get the engine and radiator mounted, so it will only needs wiring lead to be connected, hoses and little things to make it run. The car is located West of San Antonio, but I will visit Bill often coming from Houston, so there you have some interesting possibilities, if you are located in Texas or close to us. This car is up for sale because Bill has way too many cars, limited garage space, and a wife that has been more than patient, same as in my case. If you are really interested in this car, I will answer any reasonable questions about this vehicle. Now some disclaimers: This car is in fine shape, but is not brand new, so even when I tried to be as accurate and truthful on my description, and even when I know the vehicle, something might have escaped my intention, or something in the future could require maintenance as cars tend to be like that, so therefore this car is sold as is, where is with no warranties or guarantees of any kind, no part of this description can be construed as an asumption, representation or offer of performance, workability, nor fitness for any purpose or use whatsoever. By bidding on this car you are accepting that you have read this disclai ...see full item description...

Sears Roebuck also picked up another Crosley invention, a steering aid for the
Model T called the Lit'l Shofur.

The Lit'l Shofur was brilliant in its simplicity. It was basically a flat
spring that connected the Model T's front frame rail to its steering tie. When
a car equipped with the device hit a chuckhole, the spring pulled the wheels
back to a straight path.

========================
Around the time the Lit'l Shofur was introduced, Powel Crosley made his fourth attempt to get an automobile into production., but had to abandon it due to the lack of essential materials brought about by World War I.
But, even as it brought an end to his plans to build autos, the war offered an opportunity.

Observing the patriotic fervor generated by the war, Crosley was inspired to develop a product that hit the market at just the right time.  "We were just moving into World War I, and the nation's patriotism was mounting to a fever pitch.  I designed a flag holder that clamped on automobile radiator caps.  It sold like a cold drink in an arid desert!  We made thousands of them." The accessory displayed five small American flags. There were several similar flag holders on the market at the time, so it must have been Crosley's large customer base (and maybe Sears') that enabled him to do so well with this.

  When World War I ended
in 1918, the American
Automobile Accessories
Company had grown to
ninety employees.
Powel hired his brother
Lewis, recently returned
from the battlegrounds of

production side of the
business, freeing him to
pursue new ideas.

  Crosley subsequently
developed more automobile
products, among them an

most of his products for
the Model T because, he

============================

1919 Sears catalog advertisement for Model T Fords:

"Litl Sho-Fur - a well made efficient safety steering attachment which instantly straightens up front wheels when they are deflected. These two leaves do the work. Attach to tie rod and front axle as illustrated.  Instructions for attaching.  Shipping weight, about 2 1/2 pounds. Price - $1.35"

The American Automobile Accessories Company eventually expanded into phonographs and other non-automotive products.  Then came radio, which set Powel Crosl;ey, Jr. on the path to fame and even greater fortune.

Summary
Vehicle Description Here we have a 1950? or so Crosley sedan project. I'm not going to get to this one any time soon, so here it is. This car is pretty rough, but restorable. Engine is not locked up. It will turn over by hand.Transmission seems okay. Shifts through all of the gears. No interior. Some pretty good sized holes in the floor. Both doors open and close. Missing front and rear glass as well as rear window glass. Roll up door windows are cracked. It does roll and steer, and the body is not really all that bad. The worst rust is in the floor and there are a couple small holes in the fenders. Definitely a project, but I think it would be worth saving. Sorry no title. Pick up only on this one. 60 miles East of Cincinnati, Ohio 45142. Thanks and good luck bidding! Powered by eBay Turbo Lister

An interesting sidenote on this rare ex-panel delivery: the seller tells us that he found it with the solid side panels cut open by the previous owner using a saber saw (!), so he finished it with sliding-window glass riding in double channels.
