Cometeers,

I picked up a copy of the December Hemmings Muscle Machines. Starting on page 23
there is an article covering a 1967 Comet 202 427. It's great to see Comets in
print. Check it out..

Has anyone shifted the front bench seat farther back for more leg room?
At the rear of the adjustment range the seat is a little close to the steering
wheel.
Thanks, Sparky

       Thanks Jack

I have seen Dearborn Classics on line.

I saw the Dennis Carpenter booth at SEMA & got a catalogue.

Had not seen Steele Rubber, thanks for that.

The dash cluster light is protected by an in-line fuse coming off of the light
switch and fuse block.  Had the same problem last week with mine.  The in-line
fuse was bad. I would check and replace.  If the fuse is good, I would then
proceed by removing the cluster and make sure all dash light bulbs are good and
that each one is properly grounded. If you have not removed the cluster
recently, and the dash lights were working when you purchased the car, I would
suspect the in-line fuse is going to be the culprit.

As far as no headlights I am sure others can provided ( more detailed)
instructions, but I would at least remove the light switch and fuse block and
run a test light on the entire block, first.  This would at least give you an
idea if you have power.

My humble opinion

       Hi Everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente 4-door with a
newer 6-cylinder and 3-speed automatic. Within that time I've rebuilt the rear
brakes and changed the oil twice (the car sat for three years and was two quarts
low and black). The oil pressure guage is giving my a low reading, something I
was familiar with on my '62 Mercury Meteor with a 170 ci 6-cylinder. Is there
any thing I can do to increase the oil presuure besides a rebuild? Currently it
has 10W30 oil, I will switch it over to 20W50. As for the headlights, when the
switch is fully on I do not have any headlights and the dash cluster does not
light up. When the switch is on in the middle, the parking lights come on in the
front and rear but the instrument cluster does not come on? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Oil Pressure:

I agree, make sure gauge is OK. Then what are you calling low? What is the
reading under what conditions? Low at an10 pounds at an idle and 35 pounds
running down the road? 10 pounds running down the road? Do you have an idiot
light that is telling you it is low?Does it flicker a little at an idle? Is
the idle speed set high enough?

If you are relying on the factory guage/idiot light to determine that the
pressure is low, you might want to put a mechanical gauge on it and check
it. The oil pressure may not be low at all.

Were I in your position, the first thing I'd do is sell that Chevy motor to
someone who wants to put it in a Chevy. That will give you a few bucks to
use on your Comet project.

The 289 you have is a good motor and may be the best short-term alternative
if you are just looking to get the car on the road. You could then take
your time to build a better motor that would be a little more exciting than a
stock 289.

If you want more power than the 289 has, the biggest bang for the buck
would be a simple 302/C4 installation, IMO. The 302 has identical external
dimensions to the original 289 and will work fine with the normal Comet V8
suspension, cooling system and brakes, although I'd consider a 3-row radiator
and front disc brakes as being mandatory for any driver.

The 302 engines are plentiful and cheap and you can do a performance build
for relatively little money. With a slightly longer stroke than your 289,
a 302 can be made to produce 325-350 horsepower with readily-available and
cheap speed parts.

I've done the 351 conversion and while the extra power is a blast, the
engine just barely fits in an early Comet/Falcon engine bay -- clearing the
shock towers by a hair's breadth.Finding an exhaust set up that clears the
shock towers and shift linkage is a real challenge. Furthermore, a Windsor
weighs about 75 lbs more than a 289/302 and is harder on the cooling system,
suspension and brakes.

If cost is a principle consideration, but you still want more punch than
the 289 provides, I really don't think you could beat a 302/C4 combination.
That's just my opinion, though.

Subject: [Comet-List] 65 Comet Resto-mod

Hi all,

As a big fan of this group, I am hoping to get some advice on a new
project. I appreciate the expertise of the many members here. Keeping in mind
that I am trying to keep costs down, what drivetrain choice would be a good
match for a previously modded 65 Comet? It currently has the trans tunnel
expanded and a shortened 9 inch rear. The previous drive train included a
Chevy 350 but I am hoping to reinstall a Ford product. I am debating whether to
start with a newer 351W, 302, or drop a year correct 289 back in. I am
also unsure whether to go with a 4 speed toploader, a C4, or AOD. From what I
have seen hear before, it seems a 351W with an AOD can make a fairly
economical upgrade. Since the car has already been modified, I am not partial
to
the original 289 idea but that would be my cheapest route since I already
have a good 65 289 c4 setup to drop in. I would prefer not to go the route
with shaving the shock towers for a larger engine but think it would be nice
to have extra hp for a car that will only get driven in on occasion in
fair weather. Any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gary Johns
64 Comet Conv.

Hi, I'm actually in the process of a similar resto-mod myself with my 65
Caliente. I went the route of a 351w and AOD transmission. I was originally
going to put a C4 but after seeing Georges' website I immediately changed my
mind. Now I'm running stock supension so for me I had some challenges to
overcome, for example headers for the 351w swap are hard to come by, only one
company i know that still makes them is Tubular Automotive, and those run around
500 bucks shipped. I happened to find a set of crites headers on ebay which are
a tad bit bigger in diameter (1 3/4" as opposed to 1 5/8"). the next is finding
a transmission crossmember that will fit the AOD. You can either make your own,
or dish out the 150 bucks for a Dark Horse Performance xmember and mount. your
working with a clean slate, so your imagination and pocket book are the limit.

2 part epoxy to fill in the mold. Then a lot of sanding from the backside of
the epoxy to bring out just the Mercury mans head. Painted it silver. Also
modified the rubber boot shift, and then had to buy a new stereo…the old one
died. Fun project. The color is an exact match to the cars interior color code
but doesn't look the same in the pixs.

Although my effort to build this console was not inspired or a representation
of any car in particular I did try and give it a 60s feel. Driving around town
today the car just felt more sporty.

Gary...which combination excites you the most? Its your car...go with what will
make you smile. I have the 289/AOD and if I could do it again...I'd do the 351.
Just for the displacement and additional horsepower.

Hi all,

As a big fan of this group, I am hoping to get some advice on a new project. I
appreciate the expertise of the many members here. Keeping in mind that I am
trying to keep costs down, what drivetrain choice would be a good match for a
previously modded 65 Comet? It currently has the trans tunnel expanded and a
shortened 9 inch rear. The previous drive train included a Chevy 350 but I am
hoping to reinstall a Ford product. I am debating whether to start with a newer
351W, 302, or drop a year correct 289 back in. I am also unsure whether to go
with a 4 speed toploader, a C4, or AOD. From what I have seen hear before, it
seems a 351W with an AOD can make a fairly economical upgrade. Since the car has
already been modified, I am not partial to the original 289 idea but that would
be my cheapest route since I already have a good 65 289 c4 setup to drop in. I
would prefer not to go the route with shaving the shock towers for a larger
engine but think it would be nice to have extra hp for a car that will only get
driven in on occasion in fair weather. Any and all comments are greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gary Johns

My choice is the 302 with an AOD. I took my shock towers out for the Heidt's
Mustang II suspension, with rack & pinion, power disc brakes. With the shock
towers out, lots of room for the new master cylinder & power booster. Here is
where I am right now, if the pictures come through.
