The plastic gauge/sender unit is all one piece, on mine at least. It has plastic clips around the edge that clip to the metal cap that the float is attached...

Magnet works fine...we did it at the propane dealer - not that hard, you are adjusting the position of the gauge needle, not anything to do with the float...
