Subject: [Chevy-Volt] Missed the mark

When I first heard about the concept behind the Volt, my first
reaction was "Finally, they figured out a simple thing!". What I mean
by simple is that stealing a concept that already exists and
transferring to an automobile.

BUT they missed the mark. They are relying too much on batteries,
cutting edge, pricey, untested battery technology that are still in
the R&D stages. $4 per gallon is what's happening now and won't be
solved by a $40,000 Chevy Volt in 2010. The car needs to be less than
$20,000 and available this year and its easier to reach that price tag
if they do one thing, give up on the latest battery technology for now.

I don't mean to sound like a battery hater, but I know batteries or
supercapacitors will be the next thing and much better once everything
is figured out, but until then, build the Volt without the battery
technology for now and when the battery technology matured to the
point where it is feasible, build it into the car.

I invite any pro's and con's comments and additional information to my
comments above and what the mark is supposed to be.

Questions?

I have to disagree the concept is good. The batteries are even better. The new A123 batteries are outstanding. They are the real deal. I know of several...

Can you cite the examples of A123 vatteries used in "...FULL SIZED PURE EVS..."? (emphasis added) The issue is not whether they work, the issue is how long...

I don't disagree with the batteries, but my point is to forget the batteries for now and bring the car to market faster at a much cheaper price, get people...

These are all very impressive and wonderful.   But the claim is that no EV has driven more than 50K miles on Lithium without significant battery degradation....

Stephen may be getting close to 50K. His Solectria has been on the road for three years. He has several EVs so he may not be racking up the miles. Only his...

The leasing of the battery pack is possible. Starting up the generator would be totally unnecessary. A pack of A123 batteries that has 40 miles range would be...
