... i had the same problem on my 68 chevelle and it was the ground. if you go over all the grounds you may see some other things improve too!...

Tachs were available on the SS model but they were in the instrament cluster, there was no hood tach hope this helps...

Does sound like a heat soaked solenoid. Have you had the car long? I replaced my old starter with a new high torque unit and installed solenoid heat shield....
