72 SS wheels are not argent silver. Thats the color for the Rally Wheels or Malibu stock wheels. The SS wheels are dark gray. I've got the codes somewhere....

Does sound like a heat soaked solenoid. Have you had the car long? I replaced my old starter with a new high torque unit and installed solenoid heat shield....
