Hello,
Thanks for being a part of the CharlotteRAT group at YahooGroups, the message

1. This is a discussion group where we talk about riding and enjoying Triumph
Motorcycles in the Carolinas. Post suggestions for rides and questions
regarding your bikes here. This discussion group is not intended for issues such
as race, religion, preferences in diet, personal hair style, to criticize
people, promote businesses or to distribute SPAM such as off topic jokes,
product promotions, etc.. Please try to stick to this subject as much as
possible - some folks will have interest ONLY in this topic and may leave the

Folks:
I have uploaded the 2003 RAT form to the site. If your dues are
coming up, just fill it out and send it in to Greg Casey.
It is important to note that if you purchased a bike new within the
last year, your dues are complementary. After year one you will need
to rejoin RAT.
If you never got your RAT packet and Torque during the first year,
please let Jim or I know and we will address it with Triumph. It can
take a few months to get things rolling after you purchase your bike,
so be patient if it wasn't been much monger than that. Greg is
trying to convert the whole process state-side so that we can shrink
the cycle time.
Enjoy the snow!
Scot
Glad you guys had such a good time, and the show sounded real
interesting. Ducati not showing up? I'm not surprised, as with all
the turnover and reorganization that's been going on over the past
year, that company isn't quite as together (temporarily, I think) as
we'd like them to be.
The cold weather you guys got gave me a bit of a chuckle. I spent
the weekend at the Will Stoner swap meet in York, PA, and was
complaining about temperatures in the teens. Now, maybe it wasn't
quite so cold, after all.
Scot, given your complaints about the T-Bird, I'm not surprised.
It's the only bike left over from 1995, and the T3 engine series is
on its last legs, courtesy of the EPA. I think Hinckley would be
real happy to replace it completely with the Bonneville. Damn shame,
as I don't care how far Jim Howell can go on a Bonnie, I still can't
see one of those for long distance with the Thunderbird around.
Little matter of size matters. If anything, I was real surprised to
see the T-Bird Sport come back, although that's greatly due to
Triumph completely underestimating the demand for the bike once they
changed the rear pegs to something that someone older than 22 can
comfortably ride -- like my wife. I don't expect to see it around
for too many years.

The new TBS looks hot in tangerine - what a nice combo. I would
swear the bars are lower this year, but it may have just been that
the mirrors were removed. The T100 red-white-and blue color scheme
is what the Lord intended for a British Bike ;-). It also has a nice
addition of a front chrome fender. The Sprint ST is ready to rumble

is still a big disapointment on colors - looks like it got the
leftovers again...

Several folks also discussed staying in
Atlanta to enjoy some Saturday
nightlife, and meet with several other
RAT packs that are planning to attend.
We can split the group in vehicles if
this idea is popular. We will post a

Check this link out, ya'll... a really great read.
This reminded me of the articles that came out in the early 90's
discussing the return of the Triumph marque. Triumph was referred to
as a "Phoenix from the ashes". Perhaps the Phoenix has risen again.
The article also reminded me of a documentary video of Meridan
operations in the 50's called "It's a Triumph"... it's great to get
the inside scoop.
Manufacturing gurus recently theorise that a company must reinvent
itself every 10 years in order to stay competitive in the "new
economy". Perhaps this fire is one of the best things that could
have happened to Triumph - it shows that they have the spunk to stay
in the game and possibly even has assured their continued success....

Hope the roads are in good shape by Saturday, when we head down to
Atlanta for the IMS. Sure was interesting to slip/slide my way home
from work tonight.
Cheers,

Joe:
It's the same show - IMS stands for International Motorcycle Show -
It is sponsored by Cycle World. The Omni Center was a typo - Cobb
Galleria is the location.
We'll have to wait and see what makes the most sense on the ride...
It is currently snowing in the mountains - and winter weather
advisory here all day. (I don't think I want to get my Bird out if
anyone has been dumping salt on the roads)
We'll still plan on meeting early Friday unless anyone else has other
desires. Folks that want to go, please call me at 803-493-1398 by
Friday night.
Sorry you can't make it Jim - want us to bring you back the T-shirt?

What: The Second Annual I-95 RAT Run
When: Thursday 6 March 2003
Who: Anyone riding a Hinckley (1991-2003) Triumph and actually RIDES to Bike
Week.
Where: The Georgia Welcome Center on southbound I-95, just over the South
Carolina line. Meeting time is 1230-1245 (yeah, a bit earlier this year).
We plan to leave promptly at 1300, so if you need a break, arrive early.
Destination: The British Pub north of St. Augustine on US 1, with intentions
of meeting the annual Daytona RAT Pub Ride to St. Augustine for dinner. Greg
Casey is talking about getting his group to the Pub at 1830, so we've got a
bit of distance to travel in a short amount of time.
Ride/group/pace plans will be dependent on the number of participants who
show. If you rode Triumph Across America last year (you lucky bastard!)
you'll feel right at home on this run. This is going to be a very informal
ride: No tail rider to watch the group, no breakdown wagon (hell, we're
riding Triumphs, not Harleys), and all riders are assumed to be reasonably
experienced adult riders. Everyone rides at his or her own risk.
Instructions from I-95 south of Jacksonville to the Pub will be provided at
the starting point. Being Triumph North America (but not dealer) supported,
members will be expected to sign the usual waiver at the starting point. We
can travel in one large group or several smaller ones, depending on the
initiative of other riders being willing to lead a group. Speed in my group
will be slightly faster than the flow of traffic that day on I-95, but not so
fast that we have to spend the entire day watching out for state troopers.
Gas stops will be at approximately 150-mile intervals. Shorter intervals can
be arranged with group acquiescence - I'm basing the range on the usual for
my T3 Trident when the fuel warning light comes on.
I'm planning on a group stop at the point where we exit I-95 south of
Jacksonville so we can regroup and hit town as a mass (Brando, eat your heart
out!). If we reach St. Augustine early, I've got a couple of favorite
hangouts in town that I'd be more than happy to show you, or we can always
hit the Old Spanish Fort.

Seven folks weathered the wet last night to attend our monthly RAT
meeting at BMW-Ducati-Triumph. We had some great ideas shared, and
discussion of upcoming rides.
The December Toy Run and "Soggy Bum Run" New Years Day ride were
reviewed. The Toy Run had around 200 bikes in attendance and the run
up from Albemarle road was one of the fastest "cruiser" type rides I
have ever been on. According to ride leader: "Well, we were running
a little late..." The kids seemed to really appreciate the event,
and each one got at least two turns through the line picking a toy
thanks to the great turn out, and an event that will touch your
heart. Jeff Johnson gave us an overview of the New Years ride
yesterday, so there is no need to elaborate. By the way, Jeff has
started a great web site out there for local riders that you should
all check out if you haven't already - http://www.carolinariders.com
We also discussed upcoming events - the IMS show in Atlanta January
18th and the Daytona Beach I-95 RAT Run March 6th.
Here is the plan for IMS as it stands currently: Meet at 6:00 a.m.
on Jan 18 at the Cracker Barrell on Billy Graham Parkway off I-85. A
couple of us plan to bring 7 passenger vans so we can shuttle the
group down. This should get us to the show by 10:00, and we should
be able to spend several hours there before heading back. Several
folks also discussed staying in Atlanta to enjoy some Saturday
nightlife, we can split the group in vehicles if this idea is
popular. We will post a poll on the site in the next few days to see
who plans to go - please respond to the poll if you plan to attend so
we don't leave without you. The IMS show is a great opportunity -
great bikes, good deals on gear and Triumph usually offers some extra
special discounts to RAT members at their display there.
Some of the plans for Daytona Beach were posted by Syke a few days
back. The Charlotte group plans to leave the South Carolina Welcome
Center on I-77 that Thursday the 6th by 9:00 a.m. - try to get there
early! We plan to meet the Wisconsin/Knoxville groups in Columbia by
11:00, and then take off down 321 to pick up I-95 a few miles north
of the Georgia Welcome Center to arrive by 2:00. There we will pick
up the northern crew and head down. If you have never gone to
Daytona for bike week, there are lots of fun things to do for Brit
bikes - some of us will hit the vintage Brit show in Deland Friday
and then Friday night Triumph puts on a big dinner down near the
lighthouse at Ponce Inlet. Saturday, some folks will head back and
others of us may stay to catch the races.
Clint had a great idea for next month's meeting, and we put Larry and
Mark on it. We are planning to do a tech session at the dealership
on suspension set up for Hinckleys. Since February is a slow riding
month, it seems like an appropriate activity! We may need to meet a
little earlier than usual for this, so stay posted. Afterwards, we
will run over to the British pub on Park Road to tip a few. Hope to
see you there!
We will be making some changes to the RAT web space soon, since some
folks have been having difficulty with this old Yahoo club. We
discussed creating a "real" web site, and amy do so down the road,
but decided to just convert it to a Yahoo group for the time being.
You might be seeing a note in your email to this effect, but the
transition should be fairly seamless. This will give us a few more
features and functionality.
Here is a link for you to check out: http://www.cycleforum.com,

As always, you suggestions on rides and events are always welcome!
We owe our next calendar update for Torque by the 18th and will
probably take a picture for it at the IMS event.

O.K. folks, here is the new group site. We should be able to use it
much like the old site - only easier. Please make sure your settings
converted properly.
