John,
Unfortunately I have not personally tore into the venting system in the Catera. I was talking more in general terms. There is a vent/flaper (in all cars I know) that opens to allow outside air in and for “max” air condition closes there by recirulating air inside the cabin. Thus allowing it to get cooler. You have also mentioned vents open to the heater core that should be closed during cooling which could be a possible problem. If your dash has been opened to replace the heater that ups the probapility of something not hooked up or damaged. Also there is a valve that lets the hot water from the engine into the heater core that could be “stuck” open. Again these are just general things to look for. Hopefully others here will give you specifics on how to most easily tell if a vent is working properly.
Best Regards,
David

Dave,
If you're refering to is the button on the a/c controls, that switches fron 'regular' a/c to 'maximum', re:recirculate, I use it bt results the same. How do you check the ducting? I had the dash pulled to change the heater core,so could this vent be disconnected? Or are the actuator doors allowing hot air to mix, lowering the cool?
Your help appreciated; Thanks!
John

That should have been recirculating.

Have you made sure that the air duct vent (outside)is closed so the cabin air is recalculating?

Guys, need your collective thoughts....
Got my a/c system recharged after compressor replacement, but since then,it doesn't seem to cool as 'cold' as before. The amount of refrigerant, I/O pressures ,ect all are correct;changed the dryer/ accumulator, oriface tube...but still, with this hot, humid SE TX heat, I'm barly staying cool.
After a long drive, 20 miles or so, it starts to seem like its breaking the temp down, but just enough to keep the windows up,know what I mean?
Thanks in advance for your input.
John
