Hello to all. I'd like to build a Hot Rod out of my 78 Coupe Deville.
Do I need anything special to put a 500 in place of my current 425?
Is this an easy swap or a lot of work for this car? Also does anyone
know the rear ratio in this car? I believe I already have the TH400
so the trans should be good enough, but will the 500 bolt right up to
it? I'm thinking the 500 with the 120cc heads for the street. Am I
going in the right direction here? I've looked at the MTS site and
the Cad Comapny sites so I just need to know what I need for the swap
and I'll be on my way, well almost, I need a 500 so I'm looking for a
parts car or motor in PA, OH, MD, DE, NY, WV, NJ areas.

I just used the edelbrock choke kit for my 2115 intake, the big hole
in the back is for the brake, there was one more hole on the rear
back side that I just plugged.
I didn't want to make the electric choke fit since my choke lever on
the carb is rivited on.

It should be a direct bolt-in. 425's 472's & 500's share physical
dimensions. Have fun!

Anything special? Of course, a big grin when you stomp on the go pedal the
first time!

Bolt in installation.

The time has come to part with my never quite gotten to project car.
It is a 1975 Elorado convertable. As I said, this is a project car
and is in need of restoration, or at least a bunch of tinkeing to
make it reliable daily driver. But, it is a relatively unmolested car
with potential, and no bondo. The engine runs (just rebuilt the carb)
the car drives well enough, although I have only driven it about 5
miles since I bought it. It needs body work, lots of little stuff,
and the read quarters need some help. Everything is there though. The
interior is again, complete, but was exposed to some weather and
would need work to make it really nice. The car sits well, and I
haven't found any signs of accident damage. All of the glass is there
with the exception of the rear window. The top would need to be
redone, and the drive mechanism seems to be missing. As I clearly
stated, it is a project car looking for a better owner than I was. I
am asking $1500.00 and I am located in the Minneapolis MN area. e-
mail at a7miller@... I may consider a trade for a dune
buggy, or small R.V. or campervan

There is a guy on cadillacforums.com that stuck a 4.9L in a Grand
Prix... and there is talk of a northstar in a VW... there is a
website somewhere... check out this guys citations lol
http://tyre.serveftp.com/mycitations/

Basically you wanna look for a first generation northstar...
supposibly the newer ones have a tougher ECM to work with.

Good Luck,
Brian

Herb,
The engines are the same physically, so headers fit. Cams fit same
too, as do rocker train parts. Intakes should swap too, although the
425 ports are supposedly a bit smaller than 472/500 ports. I have
heard of fellows putting early 76cc heads on the 425s. They are 20cc
smaller than the 425 heads. Assuming your 425 is apx 8-1, CR would
raise up to the 9.5-1 range. I don't know what's involved, or if it
works at all for sure though.

So I have an 85 Eldo convertible that I am restoring. As you
probably know, the 4.1 is a dog. I want to put some more power under
the hood but I am not sure of what the best ( and easiest ) motor
choice would be. I though of a 5.7 TPI, or a Northstar 4.9, or a 500
caddy........ blah, blah, blah. Cody put a 472 in his and basically
typed me out a term paper on how he did it. ( thanks man!!! ) Anyone
ever tried this before??? What did you put in??? Any info would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Is the 4.1 transverse or longitudinal? If it's transverse, then a 4.9 will
basically bolt in place of it. You'll need to do some wiring and switch
computers, but it should be doable.
If it's longitudinal, you can swap any longitudinal FWD powertrain into it.

To be technically correct, if you are "Restoring" the car, you are making it
like it was when it came from teh factory. Engine and all. Since the
convertibles were very limited in production, this might be a better way to
go. But having owned an '84 Eldo with teh HT4100, I can appreciate the need
for more power.

If you really want to Kustomize the engine in this car, you might look
around for a '79 parts Eldo. They had FI Olds 350 which is nice or can be
drop-in replaced with a 403.

thanks for the correction.  I should have said "reviving from the dead".  It sat outside for 10 years so you can imagine what it looked like.  with the exception of the exterior crome that I dont think is obtainable anymore, the body and interior have been done.  i might wind up doing the 79 eldo thing, i was just looking for alternatives.  I like the 403 idea.  were they computerized back then???  My parents bought this car new in 85 and as a stupid kid I destroyed it.  Has a lot of sentimental value to me.  I want to keep it stock looking everywhere but under the hood.  thanks for your reply.

I found an ad for a 75 500 CI motor. Well as it turned out it was 2
complete, but slightly rusty cars (only one title, and probably not
restorable). The owner wants $300.00 for both cars. I'll have to find
a place to store them till I can pull the motors & trannies for my 78
CDV and Ford F100 so I may need to rent another garage. I will also
have to pay someone to flat bed both to my house so an additional
$200-$300. Both motors turn over and one had a battery and started
up, but reluntently. Am I wasting my time, or should I jump on this
oportunity for my projects I plan to start next winter. Will I be
able to find 2 more rebuildable 500 motors later down the road for
$300? What does everyone think? If anyone needs parts off of these 2
75 CDV's let me know before I send them to the JY if I get tham at

$300? What does everyone think? If anyone needs parts off of these 2
75 CDV's let me know before I send them to the JY if I get tham at
all.

Thanks in advance,

I would jump all over a deal like that but then I wouldn't have to rent
a garage or pay anybody to haul them to the house so a one running motor
and one core plus 2 transmission for $300 - $150 (what I can get from
the junkyard for the leftover parts) seems like a pretty good deal.
YMMV. -jd

This is my initial thought for one of my newly aquired 500ci
motors/trans. My question is, do I use the Ford C4 transmission or
ths TH400 that came with the motor. If I'm to use the C4 how do I
connect it to the 500? Is there an adapter and what about the mounts
for the trans? I'd also like to retain the column shifter. is this
posible?
