Found a NOS in Mnnesota thru a friend at a honda dealership who could look at
the nations dealers and check stock. One just popped up so I snagged it!

That looks awesome! - I've never ridden a bike older than an early 80s except
for the trail 70s's and 90's I had as a kid LOL.
I would love to check this out. Thanks again for the info.

I know a 81 clutch cover (waterpump) cover will fit on a 83. Seen
several at the nationals.
Will the gear & impeller from the 83 work in the 81?
I did check the gear & the part numbers are different. But that doesn't
always mean they won't work...
Enlighten me please...

Thanks for posting. Being that you are from the Washington area, I have to put in my pitch to check out the great vintage scene here. Of course you will need an older bike to participate, but check out the website, maybe check out a race and see how much fun we have in the Pacific North West. http://www.siegecraftnw.com/hammer.htm DAve

Hi Guys,
I've been lurking here for awhile. I used to ride a lot up until about the age of 25. I'm 35 now and looking to reclaim my youth or at least get out of the house and have some fun :)
I'm going to possibly pick up a 95 CR 250 tomorrow for a song. I've been reading the archives and found a lot of good info about what to look for: cracks in swingarm and frame, leaking forks ect.
If anyone has any other tips on recommended mods or other things I should look for when buying I would appreciate it!
Also, I'm from the Tacoma/Seattle area and would love to hear from anyone around here about areas to ride.

Pretty safe bet that it needs fresh main (crank roller) bearings and crank seals. You can verify this by performing a leak down test. Usually any surging in the revs will be a giveaway. You can also remove the ignition cover and while the engine is running holdiong a steady RPM just off idle, spray starting fluid/ether at the flywheel and around the carb cylinder base gasket area. If it revs up more on its own you've verified an airleak ....you have just performed a backyard leakdown test (without having to buy a leakdown test kit)
I would also go through the carb and make sure that the various sliding surfaces and float needle seat within arent excessively worn out.

Great engine in the 95. Forks were harsh with the stock valving/spring rate but with stiffer springs and lower oil height they were fixable with stock valving. An outside vendor improperly heat treated SOME of the fork tubes so they were covered by Honda in a 3 part recall in that model year. At this point I would think that someone along the way had the forks and shock serviced and or revalved so I wouldn't worry about that in the least.
There were a couple engine related recall issues ....the tin around the crank halves on some of them would separate/crack and make ugliness within....at this point that engine has probably had either a fresh crank supplied by Honda for the recall issue or a new/different one. I wouldn't worry about it either.
Last engine/recall issue was that the water passages in the frontal area of the cases had a casting blockage on some early cases. easily fixed with a 1/2" drill. Again I;m pretty certain that has been addressed as well since it was a recall/warranty issue.
Thise engines are great. They respond well to Boyesen reeds or a Rad Valve or a V Force., A 10mm deeper powervalve cover ( I make those) and 5mm pipe spacer ( I make those too)

Hi Scott...
Rocket is a VERY nice track. Probably the best I raced on this year
(PV), with the possible exception of Tomahawk & High Point.
The jury is still deliberating on the link. It did raise my seat
height, for some reason. I can say it is better. Just not sure where
it is better at. The track was muddy for practice & the first coupla
motos so I did not get to evaluate the link as I wanted. I will say
that before my suspension was balanced F&R before the link, now I need
to look to upgrade my front to match the rear.
Getting ready to do a teardown of the 83 CR250 & freshen up the crank
bearings. Tis that time of the year! I will look at the tranny at the
same time.
You wouldn't have a line on a stock exhaust for an 83 would you? I
always wondered how it would run with stock exhaust. I bet better than
DG. If I could find a Pro Circuit pipe...
Also getting ready to start on a 86 CR250 total restore (racer spec).
AHRMA has to allow 'em sooner or later.
l also have an RZ350 Yamaha restoration started. R1 front end, FZ600
swingarm bla, bla, bla...
When will it ever end?
Hope all is well up your way...

I think 3rd gear dogs get rounded, pretty sure the 81 had a real bad problem with that issue. I think 82's were a lot better and 83's better yet. If your going to have a tranny issue it will be with 3rd gear. I talked with Jay Gref and he's never had an issue with his and he's been racing it for the last 2/3 seasons. I'm searching for a 82/83 tranny for my 82, It's been parked since the Smith road race.

Thanks Scott.
I have a set of bushings & a link coming.
Almost ready to start a complete tear down for the winter.
One Q.
I have missed 3rd gear on occasion when I am a sloppy shifter. I have heard that 3rd gear is a problem with these 83's. Do you know if this is an actual gear problem, or a fork problem? I have heard of broken teeth. I am not down for that during the racing season. Would like to nip it in the bud before it becomes a big issue.

Thanks for the reply. I tried to check for spark and got only a couple
intermittent sparks. I pulled the seat and tank, it has a aftermarket Answer
Product spark enhancer on it. I will check and clean all the connectors and see
if I get any better spark.

The 1978 250r is a complete runner that is ready to ride, race or restore. It
