I've always seen at least 5mm of play as the rubber is rather thin. The shaft does not revolve very fast, a play does not lead to high vibrations....

Hi Terry, My guess would be a turbo shaft seal is leaking in the exhaust side of one of the turbo's. If it comes and goes its probably not a valve stem seal....
